Listmania!
My Fritz Lang List
By an Amazon.com customer
M - Criterion CollectionM - Criterion Collection
Buy used from: $16.61
Though I have the Cahiers-inspired mania for Lang's American period, I agree with the consensus opinion that this is his single greatest work.
Scarlet StreetScarlet Street
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $2.20
Nevertheless, this savage, uncompromising film noir is my personal favorite of Lang's films. I just wish someone--Criterion Collection, are you out there?--would give it a decent DVD release.
Fury (1936) [VHS]Fury (1936) [VHS]
Buy used from: $2.55
I used to think that this, Lang's first American film, was the best of the American period. I don't think that anymore, but this is still one of the essential American films of the 30s.
Die NibelungenDie Nibelungen
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $19.95
Clearly, the pinnacle of Lang's silent period. (I actually prefer his western Rancho Notorious and his 'Scope picture Moonfleet to this, though. Sadly, neither is available on VHS or DVD now.)
The Big HeatThe Big Heat
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $6.99
Lang's most famous film noir is also an exceptionally good one. (Again, though, I prefer another film, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, to this film. However, that film is also unavailable.)
You Only Live OnceYou Only Live Once
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.35
So far as I know, this is Hollywood's first take on Bonnie and Clyde. It also comes closer to being a film noir than any other film that emerged from 30s Hollywood that I've seen.
Woman in the Window [VHS]Woman in the Window [VHS]
Buy used from: $3.75
A slicker, more commercial take on the material covered in Scarlet Street. This is an entertaining and powerful film, but it suffers from pulling back where the later film goes for the jugular.
Spies/MSpies/M
Buy used from: $7.55
Here for Spies, which is a fast-paced and thrilling silent adventure. Aside from the early Spiders serial, this is the sprightliest of Lang's silents.
The Spiders Part 1- The Golden Lake, Part 2- The Diamond Ship (1919)The Spiders Part 1- The Golden Lake, Part 2- The Diamond Ship (1919)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $14.88
While we're talking about The Spiders, I think this bit of Lang juvenilia is really quite good. (But it's not as good as the unduly obscure The House by the River, which is currently unavailable.)
The Testament Of Dr. Mabuse - Criterion CollectionThe Testament Of Dr. Mabuse - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $16.90
My favorite of Lang's Mabuse films.
Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition)Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition)
Buy new: $25.49 / Used from: $11.30
It's unfortunate that this merely good film overshadows the rest of Lang's oeuvre. It's a marvel of architectural design, but it's also rather obtuse.
The Blue GardeniaThe Blue Gardenia
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.45
A good Lang noir, though it's nothing special (for his work). (The unavailable Human Desire is better.)
Dr. Mabuse - The GamblerDr. Mabuse - The Gambler
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $12.49
This film, which has has the makings of a great thriller (a nearly omnipotent bad guy, huge conspiratorial networks, palpable dread), could have been great if only it had been trimmed considerably.
The 1,000 Eyes of Dr. MabuseThe 1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse
Buy used from: $47.49
Lang's final film is interesting for its almost total abstraction. It's also a pretty good yarn.
Secret Beyond the Door [VHS]Secret Beyond the Door [VHS]
Buy used from: $16.34
This was, I believe, the last of Lang's films created through the production company in which he played a serious part. An interesting, albeit minor, entry in his corpus.
Ministry of Fear [VHS]Ministry of Fear [VHS]
Buy used from: $6.38
This spy film is nice to look at. I really don't remember much about it. (I prefer While the City Sleeps, which, you guessed it, is unavailable.)
Hangmen Also DieHangmen Also Die
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $14.98
Brecht and Lang--it could have been something special. It wasn't. (If you want to see an impressive film in which Brecht had a significant role, track down Kuhle Wampe.)
Cloak and DaggerCloak and Dagger
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.41
The least impressive of the Lang films I've seen. Worth a look, I guess.
Fritz Lang's Indian EpicFritz Lang's Indian Epic
Buy used from: $103.21
As yet unseen by me--even though I own it. Of the Lang films I haven't seen, this, with the possible exception of Man Hunt, is the one I'm most interested in.
Western Union [VHS]Western Union [VHS]
Buy used from: $11.99
Another I have and yet haven't seen. (Oh, and why is this, but not the far superior Rancho Notorious, available?)
Clash By Night [VHS]Clash By Night [VHS]
Buy used from: $1.50
Owned, not seen.
Return of Frank James [VHS]Return of Frank James [VHS]
Buy used from: $0.98
Ditto.
Destiny [VHS]Destiny [VHS]
Buy used from: $6.99
Not owned, not seen.
LiliomLiliom
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $17.50
Ditto. (I'm shocked to see that this is coming out on DVD, and I'm sure the other two or three people who've noticed its imminent release are similarly shocked.)
You & Me [VHS]You & Me [VHS]
Buy used from: $7.90
Ditto. (I'd really like to see this one, as I've seen the other two parts of Lang's social trilogy.)
