![]() | The Phantom of the Opera: The Original Novel by Gaston Leroux
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01 Reading the original novel is essential to any study of the Phantom. Gaston Leroux's detailed prose of the opera house and its mysteries fashions an entrancing love story.
![]() | The Essential Phantom of The Opera by Gaston Leroux
Buy used from: $1.88 Leroux's novel with annotations by Gothic scholar Leonard Wolf. Some interesting insights and information on the Phantom and the opera house. Most people seem to agree that this is the best translation of the novel as well.
![]() | The Phantom of Manhattan by Frederick Forsyth
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01 A truly bad book. The only excuse for keeping such an atrocity on my bookshelf is that it's the first Phantom anything I ever owned. I've tried to get rid of it, but sentiment overtakes me.
![]() | Phantom by Susan Kay
Buy used from: $0.66 By far, the best re-telling of POTO i've ever encountered. This book explores the Phantom's psyche with intense intimacy. Evey Phan needs this one!
![]() | The Angel of the Opera: Sherlock Holmes Meets the Phantom of the Opera by Sam Siciliano
Buy used from: $15.93 Sherlock Holmes meets the Phantom of the Opera. A highly entertaining read that pits two of literature's geniuses against each other. Raoul is a chauvanistic jerk, but isn't he always? I think this book is the Holy Grail of Phan literature; no one has a copy beacuse it's so expensive.
![]() | The Canary Trainer: From the Memoirs of John H. Watson
Buy new: $16.15 / Used from: $2.37 Another Sherlock Holmes meets the Phantom tale, but The Angel of the Opera has a much better storyline. However, this one is a much easier find in bookstores and online. Not a waste of money for the collector.
![]() | Phantasy by Becky Meadows
Buy new: $23.95 / Used from: $5.80 Not the worst I've read, but I'm not interested in reading it again. The plot is original- Christine is reincarnated as a modern-day Phan. But I found the writing hard to follow because the author doesn't know anything about grammar, spelling, punctuation, or articulation.
![]() | The Phantom of Paris by Gwenith M. Vehlow
Buy new: $8.47 / Used from: $7.17 Written by a 17-year-old, this Pahnfic isn't bad. Christine leaves Raoul for the Phantom- who totally turns his life around and becomes a good Catholic. Two things that bothered me: Raoul and Erik seem to exchange personalities and the author uses certain expressions that are not accurate to the time period. But this is a good one for your Phantom collection.
![]() | Darkness Brings The Dawn: Erik's Story by Carol Minton
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $13.41 Why I don't like this Phanfic: Phanfics never seem to have competent editors- this one's no exception. Erik doesn't end up with Christine, but forgets about her as soon as he finds a willing girl to bed, thereby cheapening the whole story; and it reads like a romance novel, heaving bosoms, tight breeches and all.
![]() | Maskerade by Terry Pratchett
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.87 Hilarious parody of opera and The Phantom that had me laughing out loud!
![]() | Night Magic by Charlotte Vale Allen
Buy new: $18.00 / Used from: $8.99 A modern Phantom/Beauty and the Beast story that's both fun and touching; good read if you're in the mood for something sappily romantic
![]() | Behind The Phantom's Mask by Roger Ebert
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $0.01 A washed-up drunk actor is preparing to play the Phantom when bizarre stuff starts happening to him in this book that makes absolutely no sense.
![]() | Stagestruck Vampires and Other Phantasms by Suzy McKee Charnas
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $2.00 Contains the story "Beauty and the Opera, or the Phantom Beast." An imaginitive retelling of the Phantom story told from the viewpoint of Christine.
![]() | The Complete Phantom of the Opera (Owl Books) by George Perry
Buy used from: $0.33 Packed with great info on the Paris Opera house, the original novel, all the old films, and Lloyd Webber's play.
![]() | The Phantom Of The Opera Companion (Film Companion) by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Buy used from: $3.37 A look into the beautiful 2004 film version. Excellent photos but disappointing text; it was taken verbatim from The Complete POTO.
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera (1929 re-release)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $7.85 The Lon Chaney 1925 version concentrates more on the "horror/melodrama" aspect of Phantom. Lon Chaney was an amazing and expressive actor and his visage as Erik is an icon of the silent era.
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $4.50 Finest film version ever! Gorgeous cinemaphotography, music...pure movie magic.
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera (TV Miniseries)
Buy used from: $33.99 Made for tv, it took me multiple viewings to appreicate it beacuse it's so different from any other POTO and messes with the story in some odd ways. But it grew on me.
![]() | Phantom of the Opera
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.98 My first exposure to POTO at age 5, so Claude Rains will always be "My Phantom" even though the movie's boring. Christine is a snooty brat and you'll be wishing that the chandelier fell on her instead.
![]() | Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.10 The sickest most god-awful version out there. I couldn't even finish it and threw my copy in the trash. This movie if just an excuse for gore that has nothing to do with the plot.
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $8.50 Kitschy stage version that had me rolling my eyes within five minutes. I don't know, but Phantom music that isn't ALW seems weird to me. It's what I grew up with, so I'm naturally biased.
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.94 Really disgusting version. Robert Englund plays the Phantom, but his Opera House seems to be located on Elm Street! A true nightmare for serious Phans.
![]() | Phantom of the Opera - Andrew Lloyd Webber: Vocal Selections - Souvenir Edition
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $0.99 The serious Phans like to accompany themselves and imagine they're the Phantom or Christine, trying to hit all those high notes.
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera (Original 1986 London Cast) by Charles Hart
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $12.00 Spectacular! Michael Crawford is amazing and Sarah Brightman...well...she improves with age. I do like her, but I get to thinking that being ALW's wife had more to do with this casting than anything.
![]() | Highlights From The Phantom Of The Opera: The Original London Cast Recording (1986 London Cast)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $0.01 Nice if you don't want the whole collection, or don't want to spend as much. There's a different version of Music of the Night, though it's still beautiful.
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera (Highlights from the 1989 Original Canadian Cast)
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $4.00 Colm Wilkinson does an amazing job as The Phantom, (once you can stop thinking of him as Jean Valjean) and I admire his interpretaion of the role. Rebecca Caine is magnificent as Christine.
![]() | Phantasia
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $7.21 Julian Lloyd Webber (brother of Andrew) is an amazing cellist. He plays the part of the Phantom on his cello with violinist Sarah Chang as Christine. The music speaks for itself; all the emotion, tragedy, and beauty of the story told without words.
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera (2004 Movie Soundtrack) by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $5.00 Soundtrack to the best film version thus far. Incredible music, and though many critics don't like the voice of Gerard Butler, they can't fault his outstanding emotional interpretation.
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera (The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Buy new: $15.93 / Used from: $9.95 This CD contains too much dialogue which basically makes it the movie without the picture.
![]() | Phantom: The American Musical Sensation (1992 Studio Cast) by Maury Yeston
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.07 Richard White sings The Phantom in this odd version. I remember Richard White as the villain Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, so I was waiting for him to sing "I use antlers in all of my decorating!"
![]() | Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Premiere Collection Encore [VHS]
Buy used from: $0.66 Original Phantom of the Opera music videos. Michael Crawford's "Music of the Night" is to die for! "Phantom of the Opera" was originally staged as a rock video and it's very freaky. Sarah Brightman looks like Cleopatra on acid.
![]() | Phantoms Don't Drive Sports Cars (The Adventures of the Bailey School Kids, #32) by Debbie Dadey
Buy used from: $0.01 If you're 7 or 8 years old, you may like this. The Bailey School Kids meet a surly violinist named Erik whom they believe is the Phantom of the Opera. Cute, good way to acquaint a kid with the Phantom
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera (A Stepping Stone Book) by Gaston Leroux
Buy new: $3.99 / Used from: $0.01 Abridged and adapted for children; a good intro to the story.
![]() | The Phantom Cat of the Opera by David Wood
Buy used from: $3.40 Whimsical children's book, in which all the characters are cats. I think this author has his Lloyd Webber plays confused!
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera by Peter F. Neumeyer
Buy used from: $1.54 Fairy-tale-like version for kids, but I think the illustrations are very creepy.
![]() | Phantom Of The Auditorium (Goosebumps) by R.L. Stine
Buy used from: $0.01 R.L. Stine's "Goosebumps" book based on POTO, with a haunted school auditorium instead of an opera house.
