Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $12.99
1957. The Lower Depths. Adaptation of a Russian play. only available in this "Double Feature" with Renoir's version. It's interesting. Watching the two of them as a double feature is VERY INTERESTING. Renoir's is full of happieness and light while Kurosawa's has the strong sadness of the original play.
The Hidden Fortress - Criterion CollectionThe Hidden Fortress - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $8.00
1958. The Hidden Fortress. My least favorite of his films. It's been sited by Lucas himself as the inspiration of Star Wars.
The Bad Sleep Well - Criterion CollectionThe Bad Sleep Well - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $13.99
1960. The Bad Sleep Well. Another Noir. Do to its lack of success with its message, it prompted Kurosawa to "re-make it" as a samurai film the product of that experiment was Yojimbo.
Yojimbo - Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine #52)Yojimbo - Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine #52)
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $18.73
1961. Yojimbo. My favorite of Kurosawa's films. Just a no good rhonin cleanin' up a town fulla' scum. Fantastic. It has a lot of themes that are mulled below the surface. The strong anti-progress nature leads Kurosawa to delve into much happier fantasy territory with his next film Sanjuro.
Sanjuro - Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine #53)Sanjuro - Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine #53)
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $13.98
1962. Sanjuro. The sequel to Yojimbo, yet it stands alone on its own right. It's much more light hearted than Yojimbo, and seems to paint Sanjuro as a bit of a bumbling fool. It's a great film with a lot of heart, a true classic.

Red Beard - Criterion CollectionRed Beard - Criterion Collection

1965. Red Beard. The story of a doctor and his apprentice. An amazing lesson in acting and characterization. Although the subject matter is definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

1970. Dodes'ka-den.
Dersu UzalaDersu Uzala

1975. Dersu Uzala.
Kagemusha - Criterion CollectionKagemusha - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $13.42
1980. Kagemusha. My favorite of the 80's epics. It's the story of a thief who replaces the emperor after he is assassinated. Another anti-progress and technology movie. Beautifully shot in color. It's the death of his old style, and a move towards the intensity of his late period.
Ran - Criterion CollectionRan - Criterion Collection
Buy used from: $26.99
1985. Ran. Kurosawa adapts King Lear to the Jidaigeki genre. A very dark and cynical movie that is very hard for me to watch, despite its beautiful color and cinematography.
