![]() | Baby, Would I Lie? : A Romance Of The Ozarks - 1st Edition/1st Printing by Donald E. Westlake
Buy used from: $29.85 Terrific sequel to "Trust Me On This" about the legal troubles of a country star in Branson, MO covered by both Trend Magazine (Sara & Jack after the end of "Trust...") & virtually the entire amoral gang from the Weekly Galaxy--up to their old antics--or worse. It's a riot! Mystery humor at its best.

![]() | Caroline Minuscule by Andrew Taylor
Buy used from: $2.25 Terrific 1st novel by the author of "An Unpardonable Crime." I believe it was an award-winner too. Clever mystery, partly in Rosington (also location of his later Roth Trilogy), as well as thriller, with novel ending. It's a novel novel.

![]() | God Save the Mark: A Novel of Crime and Confusion by Donald E. Westlake
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.88 This book starts out a bit slowly & is a bit hard to believe at first, but improves as one goes on. Overall though, it reminds me of Lawrence Block's series on Burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr--humor, mystery, & interesting characters
|
![]() | Hit Parade (John Keller Mysteries) by Lawrence Block
Buy used from: $0.01 This is a collection of short stories about an unsual hitman/stamp collector. It's the 3rd entry in the series. It's clever, esp. the dialog between Keller and his employer Dot. It's amazing to me how someone can take something innately dark & apparently humorless & make it enjoyable--like MASH or Hogan's Heroes.

Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.63 Nice, typical Francis but a bit better than most, with Todd's Laws: One shouldnt make judgments from afar, Facts are not judgments, & judgments are not facts, Emotion is a rotten base for politics, Envy is the root of all evil, The most damaging lies are told by those who believe theyre true.

![]() | KILLED IN FRINGE TIME: A Matt Cobb Mystery by William Deandrea
Buy used from: $0.01 DeAndrea has two series, Matt Cobb & Prof. Bennedetti. This book is in the former. It's a good mystery with interesting characters and clues--DeAndrea plays fair with the reader. But, for me its best feature is its humor. It's a riot! I laughed quite a bit reading it. Very enjoyable--worth 4.5 stars. I almost gave it 5.

![]() | The Moonstone (Modern Library Classics) by Wilkie Collins
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $2.48 Great clasic--perhaps the 1st real mystery novel; reveals/criticizes 19th century social & religious mores & highlights assumptions & prejudices; uses a series of 1st hand accounts w/o main protagonis

![]() | Photo finish and two other great mysteries by Ngaio Marsh
Buy used from: $0.65 A 694-p. set: Photo Finish-1980-206 pp., A Wreath for Rivera-1949-222 pp., & Death & the Dancing Footman-1941-266 pp. All good, fun mysteries-she plays fair; I liked the earlier better. All solved by Scotland Yard's Rory Alleyn & have his wife Agatha Troy in varying degree--they ~ Agatha Christies--but the clever Troy-Rory repartee ~ The Thin Man's Nick & Nora. Great reading.
|
![]() | Pride of Heroes (Black Dagger Crime) by Peter Dickinson
Buy used from: $20.62 Extremely clever but short mystery starring Detective Superintendent Pibble of Scotland Yard. Dickinson's 2nd Pibble book won a Golden Dagger award from the Crime Writers' Assn. as did the 1st one. It's a fast-moving, full-of-action, odd-ball charactered, mystery. A lot of fun!
