Daddy of Western SwingDaddy of Western Swing by Milton Brown and His Musical Brownies
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $13.40
Milton Brown's Musical Brownies were the first Western Swing band of any consequence. Often overshadowed by Bob Wills because Brown died in an auto accident in 1935, Brown wast one of Wills' closest friends and musical collaborators. Wills even married Brown's widow after he died!

For the Last TimeFor the Last Time by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.93
if you had one CD it should be this one. Greatest ever done, Historic. As an album it was placed in the Country Music Hall of Fame right after it came out! Doesn't get better than this in any genre. It features an all star cast of Wills old band members selected by Wills and led by Leon McAuliffe. Merle Haggard sings and plays here too.
Billy Jack Wills & His Western Swing BandBilly Jack Wills & His Western Swing Band by Billy Jack Wills
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $13.96
Wills' brother band in the mid 1950s doing Bill Haley songs with Tiny Moore playing bebop licks on his mandolin!
South Texas SwingSouth Texas Swing by Adolph Hofner
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $7.98
One of the best of the prewar bands (probably would have blossomed post war if his name hadn't been Adolph Hofner) including great stars who went solo afterwards like Moon Mullican.
Take It Away LeonTake It Away Leon by Leon McAuliffe
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $40.70
Leon McAuliffe Great postwar Jazz-Swing oriented Tulsa Band. This is a pop jazz band with Western swing fiddles and Leon's virtuosi steel guitar that does both Jazz and Western Swing numbers. Dig the one cut of a jam by the band without Leon and you think is a 40s Black bop session.
Take It Away the Leon Way!Take It Away the Leon Way! by Leon McAuliffe & His Cimarron Boys
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $9.46
Leon McAuliffe's second band, one of the class Western Swing outfits of all time. This group really put the swing into Western swing and is the real model for Asleep at the Wheel.
I'll Sail My Ship AloneI'll Sail My Ship Alone by Moon Mullican
Buy used from: $24.95
A great set spaning nearly 30 years of a man who rocked in western swing, blues, rock and roll and probably just walking down the street! Some great blues piano. Mullican was a musical model for Jerry Lee Lewis, the great one.
Spadella: The Essential Spade CooleySpadella: The Essential Spade Cooley by Spade Cooley
Buy used from: $17.30
The key Cooley Collection My Comments here are A MUST TO UNDERSTAND WESTERN SWING NOT JUST COOLEY. This is the original Spade Cooley Orchestra featuring Tex Williams and the great steel guitarist Joacquim Murphy. No one with ears should be without the recording of "The Oklahoma Stomp" on this CD. Without it, you're not really using your ears!
A Western Swing Dance Date with Spade & TexA Western Swing Dance Date with Spade & Tex by Spade Cooley & Tex Williams
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.70
You can never get too much of the original Spade Cooley Band. Always look to see if a Spade recording features Tex Williams. Very quickly Cooley fired Williams and all the hot musicians in this band and hired successively tamer musicians.
A Tribute To The Best Damn Fiddle Player In The World: Or, My Salute To Bob WillsA Tribute To The Best Damn Fiddle Player In The World: Or, My Salute To Bob Wills by Merle Haggard & the Strangers
Buy used from: $13.24
Hag, Bob Wills Players, Hag's Band, great music helped launch the revival of Western Swing! Also check out many of Haggard's recordings from the 1970s and 1980s . Haggard always had up to 4 former members of Bob Wills Texas Playboys in his band. He is the only non-Playboy to have appeared on the immortal For the Last Time Album!

A great live concert I enjoyed attending with today's leading Western Swingers including Lucky, Leroy, Chris Floyd and other original band members reunited with Ray Benson.
Dev'lish MaryDev'lish Mary by Hot Club of Cowtown
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $5.45
Frankly, I couldn't live without this CD after I heard their Sally Goodin. The Hot Club has the closest sound to the war time and post war Tiffany recordings sound of the Texas playboys. They do it with just a fiddle, guitar, and bass, although though sometimes with great guest shots from steel guitar player Jeremy Wakefield.
Swingin' Stampede: The Hot Club Of Cowtown Playing Hot Jazz & Western SwingSwingin' Stampede: The Hot Club Of Cowtown Playing Hot Jazz & Western Swing by Hot Club of Cowtown
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.86
Great modern band doing the 1940s Wills Sound great fiddling great rhythm, Magic, Fun, for all who can hear! Their earlier albums are better for the Western Swing fan as later albums tend to go more into "Gypsy Jazz" which is good too of course.

The Minstrel Man from GeorgiaThe Minstrel Man from Georgia by Emmett Miller

The last of the white minstrels stars or early jazz singer, both. Bob wills never hired a singer even into the 1950s unless he could sing Emmett Miller songs right. This guy is really cool!

An academic study of Western Swing good interviews with instrumentalists. It follows the development of Western swing instrument by instrument and gives information on a broad variety of players in Western swing from the 1930s to the present. It helps show the strong links of Western Swing to Jazz and pop-jazz over the years.
