A 1996 biography. Lee is a literature professor, and she constantly interweaves Woolf's writings with her life. She also briefly introduces many figures of the Bloomsbury set. Very engaging.

The most complete collection of her shorter works, including stories, sketches and youthful endeavors. The UK version is titled 'Haunted House,' but the US title 'Haunted House' has far fewer pieces.

1915: Woolf's first published novel recounts a young woman's journey aboard ship from Britain out into the adult world.

1922 novel: Woolf begins serious experimentation with a stream-of-consciousness style with a story about the life of an aimless young man.

1925: First volume of Woolf's literary essays.

1928: A novel masquerading as biography, 'Orlando' follows its hero(ine) through several centuries of life and reading. Orlando is based on Vita Sackville-West, Woolf's friend and inamorato.

1931: Experimental and challenging, 'The Waves' interweaves the thoughts and voices of multiple narrators to create a gestalt narrator.

1936: This essay treats women's equality in education and employment and looks ahead to the impending Second World War.

Woolf's final work, published following her 1941 death, this novel is set in a country home and takes in the broad sweep of British history.

1993: Film version of Woolf's sweeping novel with Tilda Swinton as the immortal, mutable Orlando.

1998: Cunningham was inspired by Mrs. Dalloway, and this fascinating novel weaves a fictionalized Woolf with the lives of her characters. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1999.
