African-American classical composer William Grant Still goes uncredited as the scorer for this classic. The piece of music for which Still is best remembered today is his Symphony No. 1 "Afro-American".

Widely known for his movies, Chaplin dabbled in composing and scored soundtracks for several of his movies including this one.

American composer Phillip Glass is prolific! It is hard to say what he is most noted for. Einstein on the Beach, The Low Symphony, Songs from Liquid Days, Passages, the list of good works is enormous. He scored a new soundtrack to the 1931 Dracula film (available on DVD with old and new soundtrack selections). He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score for The Truman Show.

Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu for Kurasawa. Takemitsu provided an extended passage of intense elegiac quality that halts at the sound of a single gun shot, leaving the audience with the pure sounds of battle: cries screams and neighing horses. If you can find a recording of his Toward the Sea II for alto flute, harp and string orchestra, you won't be disapointed.

Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, whose most popular works are his 15 symphonies and 15 string quartets, scored this film.

Shaw's Classic tale scored by Swiss classical composer Arthur Honegger. (Pacific 231 is one of my favorite compositions by Honegger.) Honegger also composed Ingrid Bergman's version of Joan of Arc.

Modern Polish composer Krystof Penderecki scores his first film.

British composer Sir Malcolm Arnold. (He has written a concerto for clarinet for Benny Goodman.) Others include The Bridge on the River Kwai.

John Tavener composed this soundtrack. Sir John Tavener (born 28 January 1944) is a British composer, knighted in 2000 for his services to music. The Protecting Veil is an amazing piece if you want to hear his audio recordings.

French composer Darius Milhaud, known for his La création du monde is credited for this score.

Australian composer Arthur Benjamin composed the extended Storm Cloud Cantata featured in this film. He also composed the Scarlet Pimpernel (1934) with Leslie Howard.

While considered one of the world's greatest pianists, Canadian Glenn Gould dabbled in composing as well as writing the score for this classic Vonnegut story.

Hungarian composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold scored a few films including this one. His first original film score, was for Captain Blood with Errol Flynn. For the rest of his life he continued to write concert music in a rich, chromatic late Romantic style, with the Violin Concerto among his notable later works.
