A classic no child should be without. The Phantom Tollbooth is amazingly imaginative, fun, silly and generally magnificent. One of my all-time favorites.

This book is great fun. The single most important thing I considered in making this list was if I still loved reading the book today, and this book more than meets the criteria.

If I had room, I would list every E. Nesbit book I have ever read on here, but Five Children and It serves as an enchanting introduction to one of my favorite authors.

Everyone needs Dr. Suess, no matter how old they are. This book and The Lorax are my favorites, and they get far less attention than they deserve. And How The Grinch Stole Christmas is outstanding.

Ramona Quimby was my hero when I was little, and in some ways she still is. A must read for every little girl with a bossy older sister.

Nothing like books about little people! For very young kids, you might also want to check out The Littles.

Another that is out of print, this one for a bit younger audience. Who doesn't love a jammin' cat with a secret night life?

A beautiful story with amazing illustrations. You can't miss this book.

You can't go wrong with a book illustrated by Jan Brett, it's impossible to choose a favorite. Browse through all of her books, they are beautiful.

May be hard to find, but a very creative and fun book.
