Buy used from: $2.73
One of my favorite musicals(Turner Classics' Robert Osborne has dubbed it his personal fav), I can't think of a better non-Christmas film to see at the holidays. Now, when does it get restored???
Great Expectations (1946) (Criterion Collection Spine #31)Great Expectations (1946) (Criterion Collection Spine #31)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $24.00
David Lean, director of "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Bridge On the River Kwai", started in film with some Dickens adaptations, this being the best. This is possibly THE best adaptation of a Dickens novel on film.
Meet Me In St. Louis (Two-Disc Special Edition)Meet Me In St. Louis (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $10.98
Vincent Minnelli's 1st color musical is less song and dance and more plot-enhancing songs: a precursor for the famous MGM musicals to come. Warners does a great job w. these discs, beautiful color.
Little Women (Collector's Series)Little Women (Collector's Series)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.95
Although this really is a Christmas film-as all the adaptations are, with the 1933 Kate Hepburn possibly the best-there is no Santa Claus or magic involved in this tale. Well, there's a certain magic.
Shirley Temple: Poor Little Rich Girl [VHS]Shirley Temple: Poor Little Rich Girl [VHS]
Buy used from: $4.00
Possibly Shirley Temple's best film, this one's got more plot than most of hers. Everyone will like this one. Just one oddity-why isn't it on DVD???
March of the Wooden SoldiersMarch of the Wooden Soldiers
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $8.25
This is the B/W version(as in not colorized by amateurs). Don't listen to the colorized devotees. Stick w. its original style.
Thief of Bagdad (1940)Thief of Bagdad (1940)
Buy used from: $22.64
One of the most enchanting fantasy epics is a must for the holiday season.
The Prisoner of Zenda (1937 and 1952 Versions)The Prisoner of Zenda (1937 and 1952 Versions)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $8.99
The '37 is the best version of the Anthony Hope novel. Ronald Colman and Madeleine Carroll will melt even the toughest viewer. However, the final sword fight in the '52 Stewart Granger film is pretty great.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Adventures of Robin Hood (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $12.75
One of the all-time greatest adventure romps. Errol Flynn is the quintessential bandit of Sherwood Forest, with this being another Warner's release having lots of extras and restored color.
The King and IThe King and I
Buy used from: $9.92
My favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. This one is perfect for the holidays.
Mary Poppins (40th Anniversary Edition)Mary Poppins (40th Anniversary Edition)
Buy used from: $10.34
This is THE digitally remastered version to get, of what many consider to be the best family entertainment on film.
Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (Two-Disc Special Edition)Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $9.24
The first feature to be produced at Disney's own studio-Buena Vista. The beautiful restoration adds to the best part of this one-the set pieces! Add the great extras and this one is a must have!
Motion Picture Masterpieces Collection (David Copperfield 1935 / Marie Antoinette 1938 / Pride and Prejudice 1940 / A Tale of Two Cities 1935 / Treasure Island 1934)Motion Picture Masterpieces Collection (David Copperfield 1935 / Marie Antoinette 1938 / Pride and Prejudice 1940 / A Tale of Two Cities 1935 / Treasure Island 1934)
Buy new: $38.99 / Used from: $74.82
'Pride & Prejudice': With other good versions, its the fun characters & gloss of this MGM one that seems perfect for the holidays. 'David Copperfield': Ditto on this Dickens adaptation. 'Tale of 2 Cities': Another grand Dickens adaptation. 'Treasure Island': Best of its kind. The last addition, 'Marie Antoinette', is just okay.
The Three MusketeersThe Three Musketeers
Buy used from: $12.46
Played tongue-in-cheek, this Richard Lester comedy epic is lots of fun! Not really suited for very young viewers, though.
ScaramoucheScaramouche
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $14.42
Beautiful lush color and a touch of comedy enhances what, on the outside, appears to be just a common tale of revenge. The final swordfight is considered by many to be the best on celluloid.
The Mark of ZorroThe Mark of Zorro
Buy used from: $4.99
The best Zorro film. Tyrone Power has lots of fun hamming it up here. The final swordfight is mainly executed by the leads, both trained swordsmen in their own right.
National VelvetNational Velvet
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $0.95
One of the best family films, with Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney both great. Everyone should see this one, enhanced by some of the most beautiful and lush technicolor.
The YearlingThe Yearling
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.50
I loved frontier shows when I was growing up(pre-Star Wars). TV ran "Bonanza", "Daniel Boone", "Little House on the Prairie", and, often, Disney's show would have one, too. Fav family film on list.
Northwest Passage [VHS]Northwest Passage [VHS]
Buy used from: $8.99
This, like The Yearling, is another frontier piece. This one, though, has loads of adventure. This kind of film used to always be seen around holidays.
The Sound of Music (Two-Disc 40th Anniversary Special Edition)The Sound of Music (Two-Disc 40th Anniversary Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $8.99
Not one of my personal favorites, my aunt took me to this film once a year, where a certain local neighborhood theater would present it. Although weak scripting, the Alps and the songs are great.
Swiss Family Robinson (Vault Disney Collection)Swiss Family Robinson (Vault Disney Collection)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $11.78
One of the last good Disney live-action features, before they became silly kid's faire. Although not altogether serious, itself, the spirit of the Johann Wyss story is present.
Lawrence of Arabia (Limited Edition)Lawrence of Arabia (Limited Edition)
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $4.08
One of my favorite films, David Lean's great epic is good anytime, but especially at the holidays.
The Fantasia Anthology (3-Disc Collector's Edition)The Fantasia Anthology (3-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $54.99
This was to be a non-animated list(or it would likely be Disney top heavy), but this edition is so great to view, w. all its beauty and the great extras, it's a must for every Christmas!
The 7th Voyage of SinbadThe 7th Voyage of Sinbad
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $5.85
This is just a purely fun fantasy epic. Sure, it's a little dated, being Harryhausen's first color spectacle, but it's so beautiful to watch & loads of fun!
