The Hound of the Baskervilles [VHS]The Hound of the Baskervilles [VHS]

What many believe to be the best Holmes film ever (I rate it 2nd best). It has great atmosphere, Rathbone and Bruce (pre-bumbling oaf) are fantastic; it desperately deserves a remastered DVD release.
Sherlock Holmes in Pearl of DeathSherlock Holmes in Pearl of Death

Of the 12 Universal sequels, this is probably the closest adaptation of its Doyle source story ("The Six Napoleons"). Great mystery and a better-than-average script, thankfully sans Moriarty.
Sherlock Holmes in The Spider WomanSherlock Holmes in The Spider Woman
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $8.44
Very classy original story, based loosely on "The Speckled Band" and "The Sign of Four." Gale Sondergaard is a wonderful villainess, and this may be the least jarring "modernized" Holmes film.
Sherlock Holmes - Dressed to KillSherlock Holmes - Dressed to Kill
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $27.60
The last of the 14 Rathbone/Bruce movies is perhaps not the slickest, but more entertaining than many and very fast-paced. The mystery of music boxes is (extremely) loosely based on "The Dancing Men."
The Hound of the BaskervillesThe Hound of the Baskervilles

Peter Cushing (an acknowledged Sherlockian) and Andre Morrell are a very fine, Doyle-accurate H/W team in a good adaptation that only uses one or two silly Hammer gimmicks.
The Private Life of Sherlock HolmesThe Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.99
Very odd but very fun film, if you can stand some dry wit in 221B. Good, out-of-the-ordinary premise that might have been great with a tighter script.
They Might Be GiantsThey Might Be Giants

A modern-day judge (George C Scott) thinks he's Holmes; his psychiatrist is one Dr Watson (Joanne Woodward). A delightful romantic comedy based on a stageplay. Has one of the best final scenes ever.
Murder by DecreeMurder by Decree

In my opinion, the very best Holmes film ever. Plummer and Mason are simply wonderful in a Jack the Ripper plot that could have been awful. Plummer is a rare Holmes to show great emotion effectively.
Young Sherlock HolmesYoung Sherlock Holmes
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.24
More Indiana Jones than Doyle, but an atmospheric and charming "What if...?" with good young lead actors. Great musical score, too.
Without a Clue [VHS]Without a Clue [VHS]
Buy used from: $1.95
Very silly and very funny. Lots of very clever jokes for aficianados of Doyle, as well as good comedy in general; Caine and Kingsley make a good (dumb) Holmes and (smart) Watson...who hate each other!
Sherlock Holmes - The Sign of FourSherlock Holmes - The Sign of Four
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.88
Strictly a TV movie, or two eps of the regular TV series, but quite good. Jeremy Brett shines in what might be the best of his 30+ Holmes adventures. Easily the best version of the popular story.
