![]() | Louisiana Story
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $16.95 This is a fine little film with absolutely gorgeous cinematography. While watching, I couldn't help but think this film was a visual influence on Malick, most notably The Thin Red Line. The boy in his canoe, the shots of the wildlife, the movement of the water, etc. The ending is kind of hokey, but most of that is made up for with the cinematograhy and the man vs. nature theme. 9/10

![]() | Day of Wrath
Buy used from: $59.99 Day of Wrath features many amazing camera shots. The way the set is presented and the use of lighting and shadow enhances the dark theme of the film - the dark theme being the absurdity of burning 'witches' at the stake. This film does a great job illustrating the way the so-called men of the 'church' were able to get want they wanted from women who were supposedly witches. 9/10

![]() | Pinocchio (Disney Gold Classic Collection)
Buy used from: $9.99 Pinocchio offers so much than just a great and creative story. It's philosophical in some ways, causing us to ponder what it really means to be 'real'. For being only the second full-length animated film, it is fantastic. The animation took a dramatic step up from Snow White. Also great is the songs/sound quality. This is a true classic and should be seen by all, children and adults. 9/10

![]() | Rebecca - Criterion Collection
Buy used from: $32.92 Rebecca is a very interesting film. It's a character study of a character that doesn't even appear in the film. Judith Anderson is especially convincing as Mrs. Denvers, giving a creepy performance that ranks up there with the best of Hitch's antagonists. Her performance and the unorthodox character study that exists in Rebecca makes this movie what it is - a classic and one of Hitch's best. 9/10

![]() | Le Corbeau (The Raven) - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $17.99 Le Corbeau was a fascinating film. It was ambigious and mysterious. This movie not only mystifies and entertains, but has a very import social commentary as well. 8/10

![]() | The Third Man - Criterion Collection (2-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $24.99 The Third Man's story is one of its finest features. It is precise and to the point while mysterious and involving too. Welles is and the rest of the cast of this film are great. What makes this film a must-see though, is its brilliant cinematography. This is a very pleasing visual film. The Third Man is one of those films that has stood the test of time well and should be seen by everyone. 8/10

![]() | Spellbound - Criterion Collection
Buy used from: $29.99 Spellbound was entertaining, full of mystery and love, and included a very nice surreal dream sequence designed by Salvidor Dali. Peck and Bergman are also great, as they usually are. Spellbound is disliked for its over-the-top plot, but unrecognized for its amazing camera angles, points of view, and cinematopraphy for 1945. This is a great film. 8/10

![]() | Rope
Buy used from: $4.45 The highlight of the film is the unique single setting. Hitchcock makes the film look like it was only filmed with a few shots. It was not, but the techniques used to make the audience believe it was are outstanding. Really, the film is worth seeing for those techniques alone. Hitch fans want to be sure not to miss this. 8/10

![]() | The Devil & Daniel Webster - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $29.99 The Devil and Daniel Webster is a unique film that has many strengths. Walter Huston was phenomenal. The film does a great job of portraying how the devil can really act in our lives. He comes in during Daniel's most desperate moment and befriends him, promising him things that sound too good to be true. He is coniving, convincing, and persistent, all three traits played perfectly by Huston. 9/10

![]() | Quai des Orfevres - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $18.00 Here is another fantastic film noir from director H.G. Clouzot. Quai des Orfevres is an entertaining and technically sound noir that excercises a bit of French New Wave. None of the actors are big but they all give solid performances that are convincing and captivating. All noir fans need to be sure to get a hold of this as it's well worth a viewing. 8/10
|
![]() | The Lady from Shanghai
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $4.99 Film noir at its finest. The way the film starts at the end is a classic noir move. Welles plays a perfect antagonist and Hayworth a better femme fatale, and the story's mystery is intriguing throughout. The conclusion of this film was perhaps its greatest strength. The scene in the house of mirrors is absolutely amazing and probably one of the greatest scenes, technically, of all time. 8/10

![]() | Arsenic and Old Lace
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.50 I thought the movie was very funny. While Grant is very theatrical, he still portrays a man in shock after learning such a harsh secret very well. Although the synopsis sounds morbid, this is indeed a comedy, and a very funny one. The two women that play Grant's aunts are perfect, passing as naive in a very realistic way. 8/10

![]() | Dumbo (Big Top Edition)
Buy used from: $23.95 Dumbo covers many aspects of the human condition without staring any humans. Fear, embarrassment, love, friendship, pain, and joy are all emotions covered in a very mature way in this film. To go along with the serious themes, this movie is also a great adventure with amazing animation. The elephants on parade scene is still one of my all-time favorite Disney scenes and songs. 8/10
|
![]() | Casablanca (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $6.94 Casablanca is a classic, straight up. The performances are all are believable, and all help the story move at a great pace. This film takes an excellent and realistic look at a situation where old lovers meet up unexpectedly and how they respond to such circumstances. Bogart and Bergman have excellent chemistry, really making this film what it is. 8/10
|
![]() | Citizen Kane (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $5.50 Citizen Kane has it all. The cinematography is arguably the most well known of all time. The acting, costume, and make-up are all excellent. And the theme and irony cause viewers to think about things they haven't before. This is an excellent movie that people who have ever uttered the words 'film buff' should have already seen by now. 8/10

![]() | The Maltese Falcon Three-Disc Special Edition (1941 & 1931 versions / Satan Met a Lady)
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $12.99 Overall, it's a great watch and definitely worth multiple watches - actually, multiple watches are required. Bogart does an amazing job in this movie, as does his supporting cast. The problem lies in trying to relate to them during initial viewing. I must do my part to warn that this is not light viewing - but it is excellent regardless. 8/10

![]() | Late Spring - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $21.89 This is a very good movie that I've probably only rated this low because personally I had a little trouble relating to it. I loved the first 20 minutes or so. The slow pace and deliberate focus on some great images was a nice way to start. Actually, the pace of the film is perfect the entire time and probably my favorite feature of the film. 8/10
|
![]() | The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Disney Gold Classic Collection)
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $6.99 I grew up with this one. I watched Adventures of Ichabod every Halloween and The Wind and the Willows was always one of my favorite books, so Mr. Toad was always a fun watch. 8/10

![]() | The Big Clock (Universal Noir Collection)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.21 Ray Milland and Charles Laughton are both great and their chemistry in this film was undeniable. The way they worked off of each other, many times prolonging Stroud's safety was great. Both were near perfect at reflecting the type of character they were playing. This movie is great and I hope that all noir fans make sure to see it, but I'm definitely not ready to call it a masterpiece. 7/10

![]() | Notorious - Criterion Collection
Buy used from: $27.99 This is a love story. Hitchcock never gets enough credit for the on-screen relationships he creates, but he has always been fantastic at it. In Notorious we have an unexpected love that's as much frustrating for all parties as it is romantic. Of course, it wouldn't be Hitchcock if there wasn't mystery and suspense involved, and he does a great job of mixing the two genres successfully. 7/10
|
![]() | The Killers - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $30.99 / Used from: $20.78 The Killers has been dubbed as the Citizen Kane of film noir - and rightfully so. The flashback story style used is very similar to that of Kane and the way the man's life is pieced together throughout the film is also very familiar. Overall, with this technique, the film is solid. Burt Lancaster is a great actor and doesn't disappoint with his performance here. 7/10
|
![]() | Foreign Correspondent
Buy used from: $3.50 As a pure suspense movie, I was a bit disappointed in the lack of suspense in key areas. The only scene I really felt were suspenseful was the one in the wind mill. Actually, the whole wind mill scene in general was perfect. Had the whole film been up to that level, I'd be talking about quite the movie right now. As it is, this film is still definitely worth a watch, but it ranks not great. 7/10
|
![]() | Kiss of Death (Fox Film Noir)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $5.99 There are really no stand-out performances or features, but everything is evenly solid. If you want to see a noir that's interesting from start to finish and doesn't involve much more than just sitting back and enjoying yourself, Kiss of Death is the movie for you. Noir fans, see this; all others, it's up in the air. 7/10
|
![]() | The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $6.94 The film is solid, but nothing stands out to make it great. Bogart's performance is very good, and watching his character evolve throughout the movie is very intriguing. Overall, I was a bit disappointed, but if I had gone into it with no expectations, I might have liked it better. Hit me up after I've re-watched it and my opinion may be different. 7/10

![]() | Sullivan's Travels - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $30.49 / Used from: $19.49 This film was fun and enjoyable, which is what it set out to do. Joel McCrea is good and convincing in his part. I haven't seen much Sturgess so I don't really have anything to compare this to. If all of his films try to push this 'movies should only be fun' agenda, I could see myself turning away from his work pretty quickly. As for now, I'll give him more chances. 7/10
|
![]() | Double Indemnity
Buy used from: $15.94 Double Indemnity played host to many great film noir techniques and had a very interesting premise. Overall, it was a very entertaining film that I will probably watch again at some point, but as of right now, I can't give this higher than a 7. It just disappointed a little too much. 7/10

![]() | The Woman in the Window (MGM Film Noir)
Buy used from: $4.85 Stay tuned for a short review. 7/10

![]() | Monsieur Verdoux
Buy used from: $6.75 I found this movie to be much less satisfying than Chaplin's silent films. First, the social commentary here is painfully forced, at least in the last 20 minutes. I will say the film was entertaining enough and it in no way bored me. And I enjoyed Verdoux's time with the woman he picks up off the streets. But overall, I can't really say this was any better than just a good little movie. 7/10
