My Favorite Bob Dylan Albums
By an Amazon.com customer
Blood on the TracksBlood on the Tracks by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.00
Dylan's greatest album, which is considerable coming ten years after Highway 61 Revisited. Songwriting of pure, raw emotion that will stir your soul especially if you've ever been heartbroken.
Blonde on BlondeBlonde on Blonde by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $15.93 / Used from: $9.32
My first Dylan record and still one of my favorite. Some people say the album has too much filler, but I disagree. I think every song is excellent and worthwhile even though it's quite long.
Time Out of MindTime Out of Mind by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.48
A latter-day Dylan masterpiece. Eleven great melancholy songs about life, loss and regret that bring back memories of Blood on the Tracks. Certainly one of Dylan's best records.
Bringing It All Back HomeBringing It All Back Home by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.33
Dylan at his electric AND acoustic best. This awesome record has two of my favorites: It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. One great song after another.
Highway 61 RevisitedHighway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.49
A moumental classic, but I prefer Bringing It All Back Home. This record has some of his greatest songs including Rolling Stone, Desolation Row, Ballad of a Thin Man and Tombstone Blues.
The Bootleg Series, Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert at Philharmonic HallThe Bootleg Series, Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert at Philharmonic Hall by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.25
Awesome October 1964 concert that wonderfully captures Dylan in his transition between protest singer and brilliant innovator. Probably my favorite live Dylan CD.
The Freewheelin' Bob DylanThe Freewheelin' Bob Dylan by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.09
Dylan's first classic album and first classic song (Blowin' in the Wind). Freewheelin' stands as probably the greatest album of the early 60s folk scene, with songs both beautiful and scathing.
Oh MercyOh Mercy by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.84
Excellent 1989 "comeback" album. A haunting set of songs produced by Daniel Lanois. Everything is great: The music, the lyrics and Bob's voice, all spectacular. One of his best latter-day albums.
The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3 : Rare And Unreleased, 1961-1991The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3 : Rare And Unreleased, 1961-1991 by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $22.97 / Used from: $20.98
Essential collection of non-album tracks that are as great as anything he ever recorded. Blind Willie McTell, Farewell Angelina, Only a Hobo, Tell Me, Foot of Pride and many more excellent songs.
BiographBiograph by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $22.97 / Used from: $5.00
Excellent compilation is half greatest hits 1962 - 1981 and half rarities and unreleased tracks. Lots of great essential non-album tracks here like Positively 4th Street, Up to Me and Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?
Bob Dylan Live 1975 (The Bootleg Series Volume 5)Bob Dylan Live 1975 (The Bootleg Series Volume 5) by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.25
Excellent sampler of the Rolling Thunder Revue tour, in which Dylan reinvents a number of his classics with a rocking band. The songs from the Desire album are especially great. Awesome live disc.
The Bootleg Series, Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live, 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall Concert"The Bootleg Series, Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live, 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall Concert" by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.82
I know I'm in the minority, but I prefer the Live 1964 and Live 1975 discs to this one. I'm not sure exactly why. However, it's an important release that any Dylan fan should own.
Tell Tale Signs: the Bootleg Series Vol. 8Tell Tale Signs: the Bootleg Series Vol. 8 by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $10.24
This has been a long time coming. Dylan outtakes spanning Oh Mercy to Modern Times. I LOVE this era as much as the 60s classics. Everything on here is amazing. Two versions of Mississippi, Born In Time, Cross the Green Mountain, Cocaine Blues. I love this!
"Love and Theft""Love and Theft"
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.49
A light-hearted, good-time Dylan album. Quite a rarity indeed. He takes song structures ranging from rock to jazz and blues and adds his own brilliant lyrics. Love and Theft is among his finest works.
DesireDesire by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $5.98
Desire has great songs with a distinctive sound thanks to Scarlet Rivera's violin and Emmylou Harris' backup vocals. It's a very unique album that Dylan hasn't done anything like before or since.
Modern TimesModern Times by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.94
Another modern classic. Dylan's 2006 album is similar to "Love and Theft" but not quite as upbeat and happy. It's a bit darker, but sounds pretty similar musically. A lot of the songs are rewrites of blues classics Dylan-style.
Nashville SkylineNashville Skyline by Bob Dylan
Buy used from: $44.99
Very different from what came before it, but Nashville Skyline is a great album. The lyrics are simple and kind of bland, but Bob makes it work somehow. It's a light, breezy album but still enjoyable.
John Wesley HardingJohn Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.28
After Blonde on Blonde, Dylan returned to acoustic folk story-songs with a tinge of country as well. The lyrics are less complex and more direct than before, but still brilliant.
Hard RainHard Rain by Bob Dylan
Buy used from: $1.91
I love the Rolling Thunder Revue stuff and I like this album a lot. Bootleg Series Volume 5 is better, but Hard Rain makes a nice companion to it. Some excellent performances especially You're a Big Girl Now and Idiot Wind.
Another Side of Bob DylanAnother Side of Bob Dylan by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $4.43
Dylan's last all-acoustic album. With Another Side, he begins to move away from "protest songs" and towards the poetic tapestries of future albums. Completely excellent.
Street LegalStreet Legal by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $7.99
Very underrated. I love this album. The horns and backup singers take some getting used to, but there are some great songs here like Changing of the Guards and Senor (Tales of Yankee Power).
Slow Train ComingSlow Train Coming by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.71
The beginning of the "Christian" phase. Even if you don't agree with his religious beliefs, it's still a terrific album. The songs are good and the band is great. Mark Knopfler contributes some excellent guitar work. A highly listenable record.
The Times They Are a-Changin'The Times They Are a-Changin' by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.75
Another great folk record. Not quite as good as Freewheelin', but it does have some truly great songs including the title track, Boots of Spanish Leather and The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll.
No Direction Home: The Soundtrack (The Bootleg Series Vol. 7)No Direction Home: The Soundtrack (The Bootleg Series Vol. 7) by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.75
Companion to the documentary featuring Dylan outtakes and rarities spanning 1959 to 1966. The best stuff is from the '65 to '66 era (disc 2), filling in the gaps from Bootleg Series 1-3.
InfidelsInfidels by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.95
One of Dylan's better 80s albums, Infidels finds Bob in a rather cynical mood. The songs are scathing and the music is great, with guitar from Mick Taylor and Mark Knopfler, slickly produced.
New MorningNew Morning by Bob Dylan
Buy used from: $1.74
New Morning is Nashville Skyline but with rock sensibilities. The songs are mellow and laid back, and he even experiments with jazz a bit, such as the beat-poem If Dogs Run Free. A fine record.
Bob DylanBob Dylan by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.50
Dylan's '62 debut is an assortment of blues and folk songs with only two originals. However, it features some of his best and most energetic singing and guitar/harmonica playing. An astonishing debut.
Shot of LoveShot of Love by Bob Dylan
Buy used from: $3.25
I like this album quite a lot. It's very upbeat, pretty rocking and several really memorable songs like Heart of Mine, Shot of Love, The Groom's Still Waiting and of course Every Grain of Sand. Good stuff.
Real Live [In Europe, 1984]Real Live [In Europe, 1984] by Bob Dylan
Buy used from: $1.87
Decent live album. Listenable, but hardly revealing. The performances are pretty good and there are some interesting lyrical changes but what really makes it worthwile is the presence of Mick Taylor on guitar.
Planet WavesPlanet Waves by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.55
Recorded with The Band, Planet Waves is enjoyable but hardly memorable. The best songs are the slow ones: Hazel, Forever Young, Dirge and Wedding Song.
Good as I Been to YouGood as I Been to You by Bob Dylan
Buy used from: $1.14
The first of Dylan's two early '90s folk collections. No original songs, just Dylan performing folk classics of yesteryear. Just Dylan and his guitar and harmonica.
Empire BurlesqueEmpire Burlesque by Bob Dylan
Buy used from: $1.80
Mid-80s Dylan with horribly dated synths and pop songs! It's not that bad, really. There's some decent material if you can overlook the production.
World Gone WrongWorld Gone Wrong by Bob Dylan
Buy used from: $2.90
Dylan returns to his roots to deliver an album of traditional folk and blues songs. Compared to Good as I Been to You this is a pretty somber set of songs, performed with conviction and some excellent acoustic guitar work.
Bob Dylan: MTV UnpluggedBob Dylan: MTV Unplugged by Bob Dylan
Buy used from: $0.98
Decent live acoustic performance but nothing we haven't seen before.
SavedSaved by Bob Dylan
Buy used from: $3.73
Well... this is not Dylan at his best. The lyrics are bland religious pap. However the music is quite good as Bob has a good band behind him. This album is strictly for A)Christians or B)Completists.
