A great book about Jefferson the Renaissance man and Monticello, which he designed and built himself. It is a reflection of Jefferson.

This book won the Pulitzer Prize. The Revolution and Jefferson changed America from colonies, to a republic, and unexpectedly to a democracy. Jefferson's Declaration of Independence says, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights; that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

This thick book is a great one-volume biography of Thomas Jefferson. Peterson, the author, is distinguished as one of the greatest Jefferson scholars. Superb.

Jefferson adored Jesus more than any other being in history and loved his moral teaching. While he was president, Jefferson rewrote the New Testament, removing what he thought was fluff added by evangelists - the miracles. I don't agree with all Jefferson's views, but I do find Jefferson's Bible valuable for Christian gaining an inspiration of Christian ethics and the life of Jesus.

Jefferson deeply opposed slavery and attacked it, yet he depended on slaves as a planter and became silent once it became clear his life would be destroyed if he crusaded against slavery. By the way, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolishing slavery after the Civil War was WRITTEN BY THOMAS JEFFERSON; the words were written previously by Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. As an architect, he designed the campus. He created the university to be free of church influence. Usually, the church would be situated at the center of the Academic Village, but Jefferson placed the library at the center to reflect his highest-regard for learning. Religious structures were excluded.

Winner of the Bancroft Prize. Jefferson won a difficult election to become president. In a few years the rival Federalist party was extinct. Jeffersonian democracy became entrenched and grew.

Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence. This explains the origins -- or at least one perspective. Although a main souce did come from the Scottish Enlightenment (and the Enlightenment in general), Jefferson drew from many sources, including his contemporaries in America.

Jefferson thought deeply and passionately about religion. He was mostly Anglican Christian, was influenced by the popular Deism (which reconciled Christianity with the ideas of the Enlightenment) but mostly he had reconstructed Christian views.

The election of 1800 was nasty.

This is a fine biography of Jefferson (especially his early years), but it is not as good as the other biographies by Bernstein, Peterson, or Malone.
