The Stand: Expanded Edition: For the First Time Complete and Uncut (Signet)The Stand: Expanded Edition: For the First Time Complete and Uncut (Signet) by Stephen King
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.58
Our First Book Club Book, and also my first King. It is a very good book, but it's more than just a horror novel. More adventure than scare, but still good
Hell HouseHell House by Richard Matheson
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $3.32
This is a disturbing book about a haunted house in the 70's. This was our second BC book. This is probably the scariest book I have ever read, and many books/movies use elements from the book even today. This book is very graphic, so be prepared...not for kids.
CarrieCarrie by Stephen King
Buy new: $27.78 / Used from: $2.19
Carrie is SK's first novel. It is very good, but sad at the same time. Even if you have seen the movie, I would recommend reading this book. I think the horror from this book comes from how obnoxious and heartless teenagers can be, or people in general. This book will make you want to apologize to anyone you made fun of in the past.
Salem's LotSalem's Lot by Stephen King
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $2.56
A great vampire book. Lately we have been overwhelmed with friendly vampires, but these vamps are not pansies...they are 'the real deal' lol. Read at night or outside for the best effect. Get the illustrated edition if you can, for deleted scenes that are intense, especially if you aren't a fan of rats *cough* kelli *cough*
Hatchet: 20th Anniversary EditionHatchet: 20th Anniversary Edition by Gary Paulsen
Buy new: $15.59 / Used from: $10.83
A book I read as a kid. This book was still good even 20 years later. A story of survival in the wilderness, and an entertaining one. It may not have fluffy vamps or some other fantasy storyline that kids books have nowadays, but it's simple survival...One other thing: yaw need to watch for a evil skunk.
Hell at the Breech: A NovelHell at the Breech: A Novel by Tom Franklin
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $0.01
The only western I have ever read, but it was very good. It first reminded me of a noir detective novel, with suspense and mystery built in. Overall it was great, but be aware it has a lot of blood and guts and other gross stuff (not like a horror book style, think no country for old men, 1890's style)...Be sure and pick up the edition with the Coda short story at the end.
Catching Fire (The Second Book of the Hunger Games)Catching Fire (The Second Book of the Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins
Buy new: $9.71 / Used from: $11.70
A good follow-up to the first novel. It starts out where the first ended, but to me this was pretty much a rehash of the first up until the last chapter. Kelli really liked it. She thinks maybe it is because I just finished the first one not long ago.
The Lost SymbolThe Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
Buy new: $12.25 / Used from: $10.85
Continues Brown's usual mix of conspiracy, thrills, and making the Pope mad. It is a fast paced thriller and we both liked it, but also discovered that I am a genius.
The Catcher in the RyeThe Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Buy new: $9.79 / Used from: $3.85
Reading this for Banned book week. September 28th to October 3rd (or somewhere around there). I liked this book. I thought it was funny, a quick read, and still felt mostly fresh and not dated. Kelli thought it was depressing at the end, and not her style of book
Duma Key: A NovelDuma Key: A Novel by Stephen King
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
A great novel with creepy parts, but mostly this is a thriller and mystery. A good choice for first time king readers, imo
ItIt by Stephen King
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.28
Reading this now. Trying to finish soon!
Under the Dome: A NovelUnder the Dome: A Novel by Stephen King
Buy new: $14.50 / Used from: $13.75
Reading this for our last book of the year, possibly!
