By an Amazon.com customer
North By NorthwestNorth By Northwest
Buy used from: $8.27
Hitchcock Masterpiece. This is one of the greatest suspense/thrillers in the history of cinema. The dialogue is sizzling and Cary Grant shines as the wrongfully accused man. Location is also key to the film, and the action takes place across most of the United States.
Psycho (Collector's Edition)Psycho (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.25
Hitchcock Great Work. This is perhaps the greatest horror movie ever. It's a groundbreaking film that revitalized the twist ending and led to a dramatic reduction in showers across the U.S. Anthony Perkins gives a performance of a lifetime, which typecast him for the rest of his career.
Vertigo (Collector's Edition)Vertigo (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.50
Hitchcock Great Work. A wonderful thriller that romantically portrays the city of San Francisco amongst a macabre love affair. Jimmy Stewart shows his maturity as an actor, giving a dark, edgy performance. Hitchcock's use of lighting and trombone shots create both a mystical atmosphere and a sense of vertigo in the film.
RopeRope
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $10.48
Underrated Hitchcock Film. This film contains one of the greatest uses of cinematic tracking shots ever filmed. Hitchcock shot each scene until he ran out of film, and he created an artificial sunset process to create the illusion of an entire evening passing in the space of an hour. The suspense he creates with the body in the chest is a benchmark.
Raging Bull (Special Edition)Raging Bull (Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.25
Scorsese Masterpiece. Scorsese made this film after a rough time in his life and career, and the grit, reality, and desperation in his own life are mirrored by Robert De Niro. Jake LaMotta's inevitable spiral downward is painful to watch, and his inability to see his plight makes it all the worse.
Taxi Driver (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Taxi Driver (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.71
Scorsese Great Work. Another great Scorsese/De Niro hookup. Scorsese's Travis Bickle is one of cinema's most complex and troubling characters. Using slow motion, Scorsese is able to portray the isolation Travis experiences, and show how alone and troubled the individual is. He also coaxed a fine performance out of a young Jodie Foster.
GoodFellasGoodFellas
Buy used from: $1.99
Scorsese Great Work. This is an example of what a gangster movie should be. In an unusual move, we don't see the perspective of the don, but rather from the low ranks. Joe Pesci gives a standout performance as an unstable mobster.
The Aviator (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)The Aviator (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $0.01
Underrated Scorsese Film. This film showcases the second great scorsese/actor combo, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio. This is the film in which Leo really matured as an actor, playing the enigmatic and eccentric Howard Hughes. With a superb supporting cast, old Hollywood and Howard's romantic connections to several leading ladies are recreated perfectly.
The Seventh Seal - Criterion CollectionThe Seventh Seal - Criterion Collection
Buy used from: $14.99
Bergman Masterpiece. This film is representative of Bergman's career. Existentialism, religious questioning, and a desperate attempt to find meaning in life highlight this work. Max Von Sydow turns in a masterful performance as the stoic Antonius Block, and Gunnar Fischer ushered in a new era in cinematography with his cliffside shots and the morbid ending dance on the mountain.
Wild Strawberries - Criterion CollectionWild Strawberries - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $13.64
Bergman Great Work. Another dark Bergman film, Wild Strawberries moves from dark premonitions to questioning the meaningful existence of a college professor in his twilight years. Like most Bergman films, finding happiness in the absence of god is central to the plot. Flashbacks and reminiscing amongst a trip with teenagers yields depth to the professor.
Through a Glass DarklyThrough a Glass Darkly
Buy used from: $33.99
Bergman Great Work. Bergman takes an average family, dissects them, and looks at them under a microscope. A young girl's mental disorders cause suffering for her husband and family, and her increasingly inappropriate relationship with her naive young brother shows how families are destroyed. Her vision of god personified is haunting.
The Silence (Criterion Collection)The Silence (Criterion Collection)
Buy used from: $19.99
Underrated Bergman Film. This is one of Bergman's better works. We see several points of view, that of a hedonistic young woman, her ailing sister, and her inquisitive and innocent young boy. Most of the film takes place in a hotel, and the setting offers different things to different characters. Quite an interesting character study.
2001 - A Space Odyssey (Two-Disc Special Edition)2001 - A Space Odyssey (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $8.50
Kubrick Masterpiece. This film ushered in a new era in Science Fiction. It is a mature film that takes its time with its shots; visual beauty and music make vast portions of this movie a silent film. Indeed, Kubrick is able to achieve both visual beauty and progress the plot forward. HAL is as cold a villain as any in cinema history.
Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Two-Disc Special Edition)Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $4.88
Kubrick Great Work. This is one of the finest political satires ever made. Peter Sellers is chameleon-like, playing several roles, and George C. Scott excels as the overzealous general. Kubrick humorously points out the absurdity of mutually assured destruction, never so well as when Slim Pickens rides the bomb to the ground.
LolitaLolita
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.87
Kubrick Great Work. Obsession is the key word in this film. James Mason manages to make a pedophile a sympathetic character, and Sue Lyons plays the tempting nymphet Lolita with sizzle and sass. This film is a creative mixture of romance, drama, dark comedy, and tragedy.
A Clockwork Orange (Two-Disc Special Edition)A Clockwork Orange (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $9.89
Underrated Kubrick Film. Easily one of the most disturbing movies ever made. Of course, any film that has a gang rape sequence while the rapists are singing "singing in the rain" could gain that title. Demented morality, the criminal justice system, droogs, and Beethoven highlight this oddity.
8 1/2 - Criterion Collection8 1/2 - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $14.29
Fellini Masterpiece. This film chronicles the life of a director as he wanders aimlessly trying to direct a movie he has no vision for. There are flashbacks, daydreams, and dream sequences that shuffle the director through all that had a creative impact on his career, from his wife, mistress, religion, and childhood. The parade sequence at the end highlights the insanity of the film.
La Dolce Vita (2-Disc Collector's Edition)La Dolce Vita (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $15.89
Fellini Great Work. This film examines hedonism and life's meaning. Great script and cinematography, this could easily be Fellini's best.
La Strada - Criterion CollectionLa Strada - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $20.90
Fellini Great Work. Fellini's love affair with the circus is highlighted in this delightful film. Although, this contains many elements often seen in Fellini films, it is inexplicably different. Great performance by Giulietta Masina.
Amarcord - Criterion CollectionAmarcord - Criterion Collection
Buy used from: $10.97
Underrated Fellini Film. Again, early childhood memories permeate Fellini's work. Drawing on personal experience, he portrays life in a lazy Italian coastal town over the course of a year. Like almost all of Fellini's films, large breasts and surreal scenes are commonplace.
It's A Wonderful Life (Two-Disc Collector's Set) (B/W & Color)It's A Wonderful Life (Two-Disc Collector's Set) (B/W & Color)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $13.99
Capra Masterpiece. This is late Capra at its finest. It is, perhaps, darker than most Capra films, but it contains the same amount of warmth, family values, and sweetness that mark all of Capra's best. It's easily the best feel good movie of all time.
It Happened One NightIt Happened One Night
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $8.24
Capra Great Work. This was the first film to garner the "Grand Slam" at the academy: Best Actor, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Picture. It was also one of the first truly great romcoms, and Colbert's ability to flag down cabs is unforgettable.
Mr. Smith Goes to WashingtonMr. Smith Goes to Washington
Buy used from: $8.99
Capra Great Work. There seems to be a trend here, with Jimmy Smith starring in director's master works, so he may deserve a little credit here too. This is an altruistic joy, with a great script and fantastic chemistry between Stewart and Arthur. The filibuster scene could stand as a model for acting.
Arsenic and Old LaceArsenic and Old Lace
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.95
Underrated Capra Film. This laughfest features one of the all time greatest comedic performances. Cary Grant, trying to remain sane amongst his sadistic brother and sweet, senile, and murderous aunts is truly a jewel. Grant is surrounded by an outstanding cast, including James Gleason, Priscilla Lane, Raymond Massey, Josephine Hull, and Petter Lorre.
The Godfather (Widescreen Edition)The Godfather (Widescreen Edition)
Buy used from: $2.62
Coppola Masterpiece. Not much can be said here. This is one of the finest films ever made, really one of the top two or three ever. Everything worked here, the camera, the music, the script, the acting; quite a fantastic movie. I never developed as personal an attachment to it as many have, but that aside, it is a masterpiece.
The Godfather, Part II (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)The Godfather, Part II (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy used from: $2.15
Coppola Great Work. Again, just a fine piece of work. All the elements remain from the original film (minus Marlon Brando), and they work just as well. I have heard many convincing arguments that this is actually the superior film, but it had a substantial foundation to begin with. This is definitely in the conversation for greatest sequel ever.
The ConversationThe Conversation
Buy used from: $10.99
Coppola Great Work. This film has received considerably less fanfare than many other Coppola films, unjustly. Gene Hackman is superb as a paranoid surveillance tech, and Coppola gets the most out of Hackman's acting ability. This is a very realistic and intense thriller.
Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $11.19
Underrated Coppola Film. This could easily be Coppola's masterpiece, and I personally enjoy it better than the Godfather. Martin Sheen narrates the insane odyssey across Vietnam, in this take on Conrad's "Heart of Darkness." Fitting music from "The Doors" sets the tone for the dichotomy between the brutal violence and the beautiful jungle.
Seven Samurai - 3 Disc Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine # 2)Seven Samurai - 3 Disc Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine # 2)
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $25.00
Kurosawa Masterpiece. Modern action films began with this work by Kurosawa. It featured the first combo of action movie elements, such as slow motion, an approaching enemy from a hillside, and reluctant heroes. Kurosawa not only directed the film, but he wrote and edited it as well, leaving himself extensive creative input. As usual, he coaxes the best performance possible from Toshiro Mifune.
Yojimbo - Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine #52)Yojimbo - Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine #52)
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $18.73
Kurosawa Great Work. This is one of Kurosawa's more complex works. Elements of comedy, action, and drama are present, but its difficult to label the film one or the other. Again, Toshiro Mifune stars in the lead role, and turns in another fine performance. Surprisingly this is one of his lesser known master works.
Ikiru - Criterion CollectionIkiru - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $12.00
Kurosawa Great Work. This film, like many other great films, deals with a man searching for meaning in his life, which has been filled with bureaucratic processes and not much more. Another frequent collaborator, Takashi Shimura, produces a mature, heartwarming performance.
Rashomon - Criterion CollectionRashomon - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $14.00
Underrated Kurosawa Film. Rashomon is a creative film, that was one of the first to use multiple perspectives to tell the same story. The precursor to films like "The Usual Suspect" and "Vantage Point," Rashomon was unique in its time. Toshiro Mifune once again shines in this film, and Kurosawa wrote and edited this film as well.
Schindler's List (Widescreen Edition)Schindler's List (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.95
Spielberg Masterpiece. Undoubtedly the saddest movie ever made. Spielberg portrays the holocaust realistically, without shying away from the gritty truth of the heinous crimes of the Nazis. William's score manages to give the film a somber tone, and Neeson gives depth and humanity to a flawed and imperfect hero. One of the best, but the subject matter and realism makes it a difficult watch.
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (Special Edition)Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.09
Spielberg Great Work. This is Spielberg's more simplistic and innocent answer to the Nazi menace. While the Nazis win in "Schindler's List," they get their butts kicked by Indy in "Raiders." Again, the music is superb and Harrison Ford gives his best performance of his career. The best feature about this film is that it is equally enjoyable to every age group.
Saving Private Ryan (Special Limited Edition)Saving Private Ryan (Special Limited Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.86
Spielberg Great Work. This is one of the most realistic portrayals of the second world war ever made. The Invasion of Normandy scene is a feast for the eyes, but is presented with brutish reality. Spielberg manages to give each soldier a complex personality, which makes it easier to become attached to them than many other war movies. Also one of Tom Hanks best.
The Color Purple (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Color Purple (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $9.00
Underrated Spielberg Film. This often overlooked gem, marks the turning point a maturing of Spielberg's career. A very emotional movie, it features surprisingly good performances from Whoopi and Oprah. Admittedly, it is a difficult watch and not the best for multiple viewings, but should be seen at least once.
Some Like It HotSome Like It Hot
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.50
Wilder Masterpiece. Quite possibly the greatest overall comedy in cinema. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon shine as cross-dressing musicians hiding from mobsters. Marilyn Monroe also stands out as the innocent, buxom beauty that is the love interest of both men. Wilder coaxes just the right amount of slapstick out of his actors and makes sure that the laughs aren't short.
Witness For the ProsecutionWitness For the Prosecution
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.77
Wilder Great Work. Dietrich carries this film, which could easily have been a boring trial movie, but is so much more than that. Wilder had a great script to work with, but he got the most out of it. The ending contains one of the great twists, you know, before they became cliche.
Double Indemnity (Universal Legacy Series)Double Indemnity (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $16.00 / Used from: $13.43
Wilder Great Work. One of the fine noirs, which sees Fred MacMurray playing a more mature role than he usually attempted. Barbara Stanwyck also shines as the Femme Fatale seductress of the movie, who has MacMurray wrapped around her little finger. This was one of Wilder's only attempts at making a film noir, but he nailed it perfectly.
SabrinaSabrina
Buy used from: $5.24
Underrated Wilder Film. Sabrina has received, quite unjustly, harsh critical reviews; but, it is truly one of the great romance films. The biggest problem with the film is the age difference between Bogart and Hepburn, and the alleged lack of chemistry between the two. However, Bogie plays his role of a reserved businessman perfectly and Audrey never looked better.
