![]() | A State of Wonder: The Complete Goldberg Variations (1955 & 1981) by Johann Sebastian Bach
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.48 It took me way-too-long to discover this music and this performance. If you've heard quite a lot of Bach (or his greatest hits), but not this, you are really missing out on something extra-special. Buy this first...

![]() | Itzhak Perlman & Daniel Barenboim - Beethoven: Violin Concerto, Romances 1 & 2 by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $5.95 This is brilliant music both in its own right, and in terms of the historical development of the violin concerto. Either way, it deserves a hearing as much as (say) Beethoven's 5th. This marvellous live recording captures the magic perfectly.

![]() | Handel - Messiah / Ameling · A. Reynolds · Langridge · Howell · Marriner by George Frideric Handel
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $10.25 If I'd have to include just one choral or opera work on the list it would be this. Some of the grand operas cover pretty adventurous subjects, but nothing could top this subject, and Handel does a masterful job. A classic that is fun to listen to all year round. I feel it's under-valued when classified as "Christmas music". It's not just for Christmas.

![]() | Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 20, 23, 24, 26 & 27
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $12.99 Where do you start with Mozart? I'd suggest this is a great place to start - especially if you like piano concertos. It showcases Mozart's lyrical powers at his very best. While Curzon looks like a corporate executive or head of accounting on the cover, his interpretation is really very subtle, tender, beautiful and enjoyable. I'd also highly recommend Curzon playing Brahms.

![]() | Schubert: The Late String Quartets; String Quintet
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $36.26 Someone else has said it before me but its worth repeating. This exceptional and romantic chamber music is "surprisingly unknown". You may as well take the plung and buy all of the late music now, from this fine recording - as you'll be hooked by any one of the quartets/quintets.

![]() | Brahms: Piano Trios Nos. 1 & 2 by Eroica Trio
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $16.99 Not surprised to read that this recording moves some people to tears. Apparently Brahms spent more than 35 years writing and revising the score. The first time you hear it you won't be disappointed. It really does sound like an instant masterpiece, what an achievement. Oh yes, and look out for Swafford's biography of Brahms.

![]() | Haydn: Piano Sonatas Nos. 33, 38, 58, 60
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $5.23 This is extremely refined music, and probably some of the most joyful keyboard music ever written. But you don't have to take my word for it. Listen to hundreds of hours of other keyboard music and then make up your mind. Ax is a good choice for these sonatas.

![]() | Grieg, Schumann: Piano Concertos / Radu Lupu, André Previn
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $2.95 A wonderful combination of piano concertos, played exceptionally well. The kind of music that sounds instantly familiar. The last movement of Grieg has some quieter piano passages that are so beautiful I have to stop and replay them again and again during the performance.

![]() | Martha Argerich Plays Chopin: The Legendary 1965 Recording by Martha Argerich
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $11.95 A "legendary" 1965 recording coupling the great Chopin with Martha Agerich. Read the reviews on Amazon...then you'll know you have to buy it. Forget that it's getting on a bit. Alternatively, buy the Ashkenazy Chopin Piano Works and settle down with some wine and cheese.

![]() | Jean Sibelius: Violinkonzert/Serenaden/Humoreske
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.66 The only CD on this list where IMO the performance may not be as perfect as the score. Mutter (looking gorgeous on the cover) is rather too self-conscious. Previn's orchestra is not as supportive as it could be. Perhaps furtive in the presence of Anne-Sophie? Occassionally they sound slow, as if the engineer slowed down the recording. But this only adds to the feeling of "a real event".

![]() | Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 "Pathétique"; Swan Lake Suite
Buy used from: $7.00 #11. But you can kill three birds with one stone here. You'll get the justly famous 6th, plus some justly famous ballet (Swan Lake), plus the leadership of Karjan, the star-of-stars conductor. What more could you want? (Quite a lot more CDs, but that's another list).
