I'm not aware of there being any film that better expresses nihilism--particularly American nihilism: where not even our names mean anything. Two characters (Jules and Butch)transform the blackness of nihilism into something quit sublime and powerful.
The Good, the Bad and the UglyThe Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.82
...an epoch western that takes place in the cultural wasteland following the break-up of the Confederacy. The sound track for this film is exceptional and deserves mentioning. Metallica plays the sound track before their concerts, or used to.
Hype!Hype!
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $9.32
This documentary was released in 1996, years after grunge had shot its wad. Things weren't quit this "hyped" and stupid at the beginning but as time moved on cliches prevailed ala Spinal Tap. Intelligent people aspiring toward an innocent child-like state of perpetual geekdom.
FreaksFreaks
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.24
This is the type of horror that has you pumping your fist because it's so cool.
Alien (The Director's Cut)Alien (The Director's Cut)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $6.15
This is the first in the Alien series and the only one worth watching, in my opinion. Beautifully horrifying scenes that show the evil aftermath of a long dead society. The creatures possess extreme hive-like intelligence and no conscience whatsoever. Kind of like Maiden's 'Killer' album.
Beavis and Butt-Head - The Mike Judge Collection (Vols. 1-3 + Beavis and Butt-head Do America - Special Collector's Edition)Beavis and Butt-Head - The Mike Judge Collection (Vols. 1-3 + Beavis and Butt-head Do America - Special Collector's Edition)

No they don't have the MTV music videos incorporated into the episodes. (You can find those everywhere on YouTube.) If you ever wondered why it all came crashing down in the 1990s, look no further. This is why.
Raging Bull (Special Edition)Raging Bull (Special Edition)
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $2.75
Sometimes the best movies are those that are most difficult for the viewer to watch and enjoy, and that's certainly the case with this movie. It's not easy feeling sympathy for Jake LaMotta, about whome this movie was made. The guy was a brute.
Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $9.44
One of the most disturbing and profound openings in cinema--operatic. Very Wagnerian.
Das Boot - The Director's CutDas Boot - The Director's Cut
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.54
A long WW II movie that has you journeying with Nazis through the oceans of the world. S.O.D. fans will probably have this movie poster on their walls somewhere.
CrossroadsCrossroads
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.71
Check out the awsome Steve Vai solo at the end. This is a good lesson on distinguishing classical-based rock with blues based. See who wins.
American MovieAmerican Movie
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $8.45
Inadvertantly one of the funniest movies of all time: about a hippie movie maker with no money and a drinking problem. Great Metallica riffs on the acoustic guitar.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2-Disc Ultimate Edition)The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2-Disc Ultimate Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.43
This is the original version; later versions just can't compare. Grainy film stock. Memorable charcters. The mood of horror that runs through this story is so strong that it seems almost tangible. This is the principle example of machabre horror.
Heavy Metal (Collector's Edition)Heavy Metal (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $12.99
It's a one way ticket to midnight, call it heavy metal.
Suspiria (2-Disc Special Edition)Suspiria (2-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $10.99
Here's another great movie from the 70s permeated by a sense of evil and wickedness. I usually despise slasher movies, but this one is different. This one has Dario's sense of sophistication and excellent feel for the movement of plot. It also has one of the best endings in movie history.
The Third Man - Criterion Collection (2-Disc Edition)The Third Man - Criterion Collection (2-Disc Edition)
Buy used from: $29.98
If you like Graham Green novels, where characters spend their days smoking cigarettes and lying in bed, you'll like this movie about post war Europe. A classic. Smart dialogue. Impeccable acting.
Metallica: Year and A Half Parts 1 & 2Metallica: Year and A Half Parts 1 & 2
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $8.00
It took these kind of smash-mouth tunes to dethrone glam metal. For that they deserve the Nobel. This and "Cliff em All" are their only docs worth watching.
Night of the Living Dead (30th Anniversary Edition)Night of the Living Dead (30th Anniversary Edition)
Buy used from: $3.84
The first and the original--in black and white. This is a movie you'll want to watch over and over again, despite the cheesy dialogue and bad acting.
The Godfather DVD Collection (The Godfather/ The Godfather - Part II/ The Godfather - Part III)The Godfather DVD Collection (The Godfather/ The Godfather - Part II/ The Godfather - Part III)
Buy new: $39.99 / Used from: $15.49
A subtle element of horror runs like a silver thread through all the Godfather movies. (Coppola started out in the horror genre.) It's an honest portrayal of the cold, cruel world of the Italian Mafia. Yet inside the criminal underworld is the warmth and love of family bonds, united by blood.
Repo Man (Special Edition)Repo Man (Special Edition)

Punk not metal, but hey.
Sling Blade - Director's Cut (Miramax Collector's Series)Sling Blade - Director's Cut (Miramax Collector's Series)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.33
Got any French fried potaters in there? The retarded main character, Karl, was once probably the most imitated and parodied character in contemporary US culture. In fact the commentaries and parodies are better than the movie itself. This is a movie you must "ensoul" to appreciate. Get it?
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Widescreen Special Edition)Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Widescreen Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.97
Declining Civilizations are innately funny as they self destruct, as well as rude and obnoxious. The characters still manage to produce a moral code upon which to base their lives, a moral code based on individual conscience rather than social norms. Back when Sean Penn was cool.
This Is Spinal Tap (Special Edition)This Is Spinal Tap (Special Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.17
The #1 greatest heavy metal movie.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Restored Authorized Edition)The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Restored Authorized Edition)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $12.38
A cult classic. It's about a sleep walking killer. Rob Zombie is a fan of this movie, and produced a short version of his own starring his girl friend, now his wife.
WestworldWestworld
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.99
Rather similar to Jurassic Park, but far better in my opinion. Very imaginative. If you love science fiction, you can't miss this 70s classic.
AmadeusAmadeus
Buy new: $19.97 / Used from: $5.69
This movie expresses an element of the sublime that is insurrpassable. A very dark film, yet filled with humorous scenes and the light of art.
Taxi Driver (Collector's Edition)Taxi Driver (Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $2.00
This movie has the same sort of "urban wasteland" feel conveyed by groups like Black Flag. The Travis character has evolved into a right wing folk hero, complete with the mowhawk and the guns.
Psycho (Collector's Edition)Psycho (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.22
This is probably the best Hitchcock film, although it's a toss up between "Psycho", "North by Northwest", "Rear Window", and "Vertigo". Buy all of them.
Hannah and Her SistersHannah and Her Sisters
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.89
Henry Rollins is a Woody fan. Not for everyone. I personally prefer Woody's "mid period" of the 1980s over his late and early periods. "Hannah and Her Sisters" is his all around most well rounded film, along with "Manhatten" and "Annie Hall".
Rosemary's BabyRosemary's Baby
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.99
This is Polanski's trademark film, a must own for horror fans; made before Mia Farrow was ruined by Woody Allen and Frank Sinatra.
Planet of the ApesPlanet of the Apes
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.17
This is the first and original Planet of the Apes movie, starring Charlton Heston. This movie has everything. Rod Serling makes creepiness into a form of true horror.
The Blair Witch ProjectThe Blair Witch Project
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $1.48
By the end you're filled with pure dread over their inevitable fate, but at the beginning you almost want to pull your hair because the characters are so decadent. The film's release date coincides exactly with the evaporation of pop culture. Repeatedly the kids take the wrong turn. But was there ever another way out for them? Their destruction seemed preordained.
Soylent GreenSoylent Green
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $8.94
The late 60s were filled with apocalyptic science-fiction films, and this is among the very best. Forget method acting. Charlton Heston is archetypal.
Moby DickMoby Dick
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.13
...Gregory Peck plays an epoch sea captain of the Pequod seeking a murderous white whale that devours men alive. The crew descends into primitivism as they hunt the whale across the seas of the world (kind of like a Motley Crue concert, circa 1985).
Red River [VHS]Red River [VHS]

No one better exemplies the American Doppelganger. John Wayne powerfully portrays an old-school, bitter, Texas cattleman. At one point Wayne starts shooting any of his herdsman who desert the cattle drive they're making to Kanasas. The men mutiny and join forces with Wayne's adoped son, Matthew.
The Night of the HunterThe Night of the Hunter
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.94
This movie captures that distinctly slow, mystical, wise quality of the deep South. This is horror on the surreal level.
The Bad SeedThe Bad Seed
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $11.77
This is a hidden gem that seems to have been forgotten for some reason by popular culture, though at the time of its release it was very popular and was nominated for four Academy awarards. It's about a child sociopath who suffers from psychopathic rages in which she deviously kills.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) [VHS]Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) [VHS]
Buy used from: $0.80
I think the 1970s version is a bit better than the original; it's creepier anyway. The first thirty to fourty minutes are rivetting. If the idea of the film intrugues you, as it did me, go ahead and watch the 1950s version: which is all around better as a whole.
Kurt Cobain: The Early Life of a LegendKurt Cobain: The Early Life of a Legend
Buy new: $19.95 / Used from: $7.17
Old friends, teachers, and a former band mate, emerge from the wood work. I like this the best out of all the Cobain documentaries; it focuses specifically on his Montesano-Aberdeen upbringing. His Motorhead buddies are hilarious.
