The Spy Who Loved Me - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionThe Spy Who Loved Me - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $18.99
(10/10 Stars) This movie has it all: a great plot, great action, and Roger Moore's best performance as Bond. It does not overemphasize gadgets and action sequences, nor does it become boring at any point. All of the characters are likable, from Anya Amasova (XXX) to Jaws.
Casino Royale (2-Disc Widescreen Edition)Casino Royale (2-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.95
(10/10 Stars) This movie revitalized a stagnant series. The emphasis is largely on character development, and the movie is very violent for a Bond flick, but Daniel Craig's cold-blooded take on Bond fits well with the Bond of Ian Fleming's novels.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionOn Her Majesty's Secret Service - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $12.99
(10/10 Stars) George Lazenby serves up one of the most underrated performances in the series in this classic featuring an unusually dramatic plot, a spectacular natural setting in the Swiss Alps, and 007's most important relationship of all.
For Your Eyes Only - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionFor Your Eyes Only - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $12.50
(10/10 Stars) This very serious Bond outing gets back to the basics and avoids the tired cliche of a madman bent on world domination or world destruction. One character (Lynn Holly Johnson as Bibi Dahl) is quite annoying, but otherwise this movie is non-stop, fairly realistic entertainment.
Live and Let Die - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionLive and Let Die - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $12.50
(9/10 Stars) Although this movie is clearly racist, cheesy to the core, and has a bare bones plot, it also has some of the most creative sequences and ingenious lines of all the Bond films. Roger Moore shines in his debut as 007.
You Only Live Twice - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionYou Only Live Twice - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
(9/10 Stars) A hollowed out volcano may seem like a silly concept today, especially after the Austin Powers series parodied it, but it is a clever (if cheesy) idea, and the action is much more exciting than in Connery's first four movies. Connery is certainly the greatest actor to play Bond, but this is his only movie with a plot that I consider to be truly entertaining by today's standards.
The Living Daylights - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionThe Living Daylights - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $6.95
(9/10 Stars) I know that Timothy Dalton is often criticized, but his humorless take on Bond is quite refreshing after the silliness of some of Moore's films. The action is a little over the top, but still enjoyable.
GoldenEye (2-Disc Ultimate Edition)GoldenEye (2-Disc Ultimate Edition)
Buy used from: $9.00
(9/10 Stars) Although Pierce Brosnan is my least favorite actor to portray Bond, GoldenEye has the right combination of action, wit, cheesiness, post-Cold-War melodrama, and a more critical take on 007's misogynistic ways.
Licence To Kill - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionLicence To Kill - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $5.00
(8/10 Stars) The most brutal and humorless one of them all, which apparently catches some people off guard. But revenge and brutality are not out of place in a Bond film, and Dalton is convincing the whole time. It could do without Wayne Newton, however.
The Man With The Golden Gun - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionThe Man With The Golden Gun - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $17.67
(8/10 Stars) Considered by many to be one of the worst for its undeniable silliness, I actually found Scaramanga to be one of the most likable and most deranged Bond villains. And the silliness adds to the entertainment value, even if some members of the cast can't act.
Goldfinger - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionGoldfinger - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $15.99
(8/10 Stars) By the standards of its time, this is one of the most daring and innovative Bond films. If this list consisted of Bond movies by historical significance, this one would be number one. But when I watched it recently, I found it very dated, and I found the plot to make Fort Knox gold radioactive a bit far-fetched. But I would still recommend it to anyone.
From Russia With Love - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionFrom Russia With Love - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $12.50
(8/10 Stars) Sean Connery excels. Lotte Lenya is one of the great Bond villains. The fight sequence on the train is memorable. But overall it is slow-moving and, like Goldfinger, a bit dated. But again, I would still recommend it.
Tomorrow Never Dies (2-Disc Ultimate Edition)Tomorrow Never Dies (2-Disc Ultimate Edition)
Buy used from: $15.99
(8/10 Stars) Eliot Carver may not be one of the more interesting Bond villains, but Michelle Yeoh's Wai Lin is the first Bond woman to be 007's equal. And it is not slow moving, even if the plot and some of the characters are a bit weak.
Dr. No (James Bond Two-Disc Ultimate Edition)Dr. No (James Bond Two-Disc Ultimate Edition)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $6.27
(8/10 Stars) By the standards of its time, it is one of the best. It is certainly one of the most historically significant. But it is neither as entertaining nor as fulfilling a plot as some of the later ones.
Thunderball (James Bond Two-Disc Ultimate Edition)Thunderball (James Bond Two-Disc Ultimate Edition)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $3.97
(7/10 Stars) Like Connery's other early films, it is good by the standards of its time. The underwater action sequences were apparently mind-blowing back in 1965. But boy do they seem to last forever now. And the supporting actors, from Claudine Auger to Adolfo Celi, are not very convincing.
OctopussyOctopussy
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.95
(6/10 Stars) Louis Jordan's Kamal Khan may be the worst Bond villain ever, Roger Moore was too old to play Bond, and Faberge eggs and octopi do not make for the most engaging plot. The action sequences in Germany (partially) redeem the movie.
Diamonds Are Forever - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionDiamonds Are Forever - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $22.99
(6/10 Stars) 75% of the people in this film should have been forced to take acting classes before being cast. However, Sean Connery is good as usual, and his last "official" performance as Bond makes it worthwhile.
The World Is Not Enough - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionThe World Is Not Enough - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $5.25
(5/10 Stars) Average all around. Denise Richards's performance as Christmas Jones is painful to watch. And the action sequences just go on too long, without a compelling plot to sustain them.
Moonraker - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionMoonraker - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $20.99
(4/10 Stars) The first half is promising. The second half is cheesy and over the top even by Bond standards. Star Wars and Bond don't mix. And why ruin the great scene with Jaws on the gondola by having Jaws fall in love right afterward? Also, those six camera closeups in a row on corporate billboard advertisements are just too much.
Never Say Never AgainNever Say Never Again
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.15
(3/10 Stars) Sean Connery's worst performance as Bond is in this unnecessary remake of Thunderball. Even his acting is sub-par. Maybe he was too old at this point. But hey, he's younger than Roger Moore. In general, the plot is disjointed and the acting is bad.
Die Another Day (James Bond Two-Disc Ultimate Edition)Die Another Day (James Bond Two-Disc Ultimate Edition)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $1.95
(3/10 Stars) The movie had great potential in the beginning, when Bond was tortured in North Korea, had his 007 status revoked, and met Jinx. But a few genetic surgeries, invisible cars, rogue agents, and artificial suns later, this movie made absolutely no sense. Madonna's title song and cameo don't help, either.
A View To A Kill - 2-Disc Ultimate EditionA View To A Kill - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
Buy used from: $17.99
(1/10 Stars) Where to begin? Roger Moore was way too old. Tanya Roberts and Grace Jones are terrible. The plot is an asinine attempt to cash in on the tech boom. And who would fill a gun with rock salt? This movie gets one star for Christopher Walken's brilliant performance as Max Zorin. Still, it is the worst Bond movie.
