It was never stated Detroit was the venue but the film was shot in Michigan, the action takes place in Hamtramck, and Eastwood played a former Ford auto plant employee. The movie is named for his 1972 Ford Gran Torino, built at the end of the supercar era. The final scene is a drive along either Lake Superior at Marquette or Lake St. Clair, I can't tell which.
