![]() | Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $6.96 Easily the best album I have ever listened to. I have never heard a song this long (approx. 42 minutes) with this many movements and melodic transistions. Truly a masterpiece in songwriting and playing. The closest album I'd call perfect.
![]() | Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.60 Sorry Dark Side fans, but this is my favorite Pink Floyd album, and one of the greatest musical journeys I've ever heard. I love this album because musicianship is off the charts on this one. Great stuff.
![]() | Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence by Dream Theater
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $4.49 So heavy, so talented, so good. This band consists of some of the most talented musicians to ever conceive a band, and this album for me represents everything they stand for.
![]() | A Night at the Opera by Queen
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.75 I can safely say Queen is my favorite band. This album represents the pinnacle of album production and incredible diversity in music. One of the most talented bands in existance.
![]() | These Days by Bon Jovi
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.47 Ahhh, bet you didn't expect to see Bon Jovi on this list, especially this album from them. Simply put, this is the most emotional album I have ever heard. The music is absolutely beautiful and the lyrics inspirational. Breath-taking.
![]() | Abbey Road (Remastered) by The Beatles
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.08 How can you not like The Beatles? I can listen to this album over and over, it's so intricate. Plus it has that great medley.
![]() | Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.98 A classic that belongs on everyone's list of favorite albums. This is an album that literally takes you away from reality and absorbs you into another dimension. A beautiful album.
![]() | Octavarium by Dream Theater
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.33 Dream Theater at their most diverse, which is why I love it so much. The title track may be my favorite song of all time, a 24 minute cycle of great music and themes.
![]() | Minstrel in the Gallery by Jethro Tull
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.58 An underdog in the Jethro Tull catelog. This one was released at the wrong time, as it is much heavier and more progressive than people realized. This has the band's most intricate playing which includes great breakdowns in the vein of King Crimson.
![]() | Deadwing by Porcupine Tree
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.98 I love finding new bands that are so good, and non other than Porcupine Tree who does a great job at blending '70s progressive rock and alternative rock. This is probably the band's heaviest album, but its beauty and technicality cannot be denied.
![]() | Keep the Faith by Bon Jovi
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.45 Some more Bon Jovi. Truth is, Bon Jovi is the band that got me into music, Slippery When Wet is the first album I ever bought, and since then my musical tastes have evolved. I loved their '90s era the best, and this is another truly phenomenal album of pure great rock and roll!
![]() | Cosmic Egg [Deluxe Edition] by Wolfmother
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.70 Yeah yeah yeah, I know this album just came out, but this one really hit home for me. This band has infused together all the great rock from the '70s and made something fresh out of it; nothing sounds rehashed or generic. On top of that, the songwriting here is just stellar, even more so than their self-titled debut. This band truly stands out.
![]() | Vs. by Pearl Jam
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.28 Easily my favorite band produced from the grunge era, and this album represents them at their strongest. While I also loved more of their experimental offerings (especially No Code) this album is just too strong to ignore and is on constant rotation on my iPod. Vedder is one of the great lyricists in modern music too.
![]() | Led Zeppelin IV (aka ZOSO) by Led Zeppelin
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.79 The great Led Zeppelin. This is the most obvious pick for their best album, and for good reason. After the experimentalism of III (my second favorite from the band) these guys produce their most diverse offering and every song is stellar. This album also includes my favorite Zeppelin song: "The Battle of Evermore".
![]() | The Beatles (The White Album) by The Beatles
Buy used from: $8.40 Ya know, The Beatles are too good to be summed into words. If you don't know that this is a great album then there's no helping you. I rest my case.
![]() | Colorblind by Robert Randolph & The Family Band
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.10 Wow! I have never heard someone play the pedal lap steel guitar the way Randolph does. Their first studio album (Unclassified) was great, and on Colorblind they amp up their songwriting with great funk, soul, and rock that I thought was lost for years.
![]() | Christmas Eve and Other Stories by Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.49 I see this great band in concert once a year, they always put on the best shows. Seriously, I have never seen another band better live than TSO. This album is absolutely beautiful and is what the concept album is all about: beautiful music and a great story. This is not just an album to listen to during the holidays.
![]() | Sheer Heart Attack by Queen
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.98 Even though I wasn't alive during 1974 (far from being alive actually) I try to imagine listening to older albums when they first came out. When I listened to this, especially on "Stone Cold Crazy", I simply asked myself, "How can this not be illegal?!" These guys are so ahead of their time it's frightening. Great production and diversity all around, an amazing album.
![]() | Toys in the Attic by Aerosmith
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.26 Simply a great rock and roll record, every song is a winner and results in one of the most entertaining albums I've ever heard. I have such a great time listening to a great band like Aerosmith.
![]() | Ultraspontane by John Jorgenson Quintet
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $7.99 Bet you never heard of this guy. This is gypsy jazz at its finest, first originated by the great Django Reinhart. You may have heard this guy play for The Hellecasters, if your musical tastes stretch that far. He is a phenomenal player and the music here is so unique and strong.
![]() | The Dirty Boogie by Brian Setzer
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $0.05 The Brian Setzer Orchestra was the first group I've ever seen live, I was about 8 years old. Swing and jazz music will always be special to me, great to dance to and incredibly fun. Setzer takes it to levels beyond the ordinary and his guitar playing is fantastic.
![]() | Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast) by Kristin Chenoweth
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.96 I love broadway, and this is currently my favorite musical I've seen. The story is great, the music is fantastic, and the vocals are among the best I've heard, thanks to the great Idian Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth. Great emotional music.
![]() | Seal by Seal
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $0.01 Seal has one of the most soulful voices I've heard, and he shines on this album. Also includes his hit song "Kiss from a Rose", one of my all time favorite songs.
![]() | The Royal Scam by Steely Dan
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $7.49 Two words: Larry Carlton. His guitar solos on "Kid Charlemagne" and "Don't Take Me Alive" are worth the price of this album alone. The duo of Fagan and Becker produce great music.
![]() | Blackbird by Alter Bridge
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.49 Ex members of Creed (a band I actually like, believe it or not) come together to form this great band. Their debut was great but this album took them to new heights. One of the best alternative metal albums I've heard, if not the best.
![]() | Superunknown by Soundgarden
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.49 Another great band from the grunge era. This is a classic alternative rock/metal album; great music and very deep lyrics courtesy of Chris Cornell. "My Wave" may be the best 5/4 jam I've ever heard.
![]() | Black Holes and Revelations by Muse
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.00 I have never heard a band like Muse before, their sound is so distinct and incomparable. Leave it to England to still produce great bands (British Invasion anyone?). It's also hard to believe all this music comes from a 3 piece band.
![]() | Queen II by Queen
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.99 Such a dark and edgy album from my favorite band, it's so hard to believe this was released in 1974. These guys were so ahead of their time, and this album shows it even when it was early on in their career. This album also includes the greatest song never heard: "The March of the Black Queen".
![]() | 2112 by Rush
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.89 Being a big fan of progressive rock, it'd be an insult to not include an album from this great band. Intense music from only a 3 piece band that was so distinct for their time, and the songwriting is just so good. The epic title track is a masterpiece.
