The Exorcist (25th Anniversary Special Edition)The Exorcist (25th Anniversary Special Edition)
Buy used from: $6.59
One of my favorite movies of any genre, this tale of possession is top-notch and scary (at least the first several viewings).
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2-Disc Ultimate Edition)The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2-Disc Ultimate Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.58
This film warped my fragile widdle mind as a youngster and it remains a favorite. It achieves its unsettling effects without showing much violence or gore.
HalloweenHalloween
Buy used from: $1.38
Highly influential movie that expertly marries suspense and scares with masterful movie making and a terrific music score. Perfectly captures the feel of the Midwest at Halloween, my favorite time.
Black ChristmasBlack Christmas
Buy used from: $24.31
Sorority sisters regard an obscene caller as harmless, until a local high school girl is found murdered. This suspense/horror film is actually somewhat chilling.
The ShiningThe Shining
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.83
A shame Kubrick didn’t make more horror films because he had such a knack for humanity’s natural horror. Accept no substitutes.
Rosemary's BabyRosemary's Baby
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.87
Is Rosemary being paranoid, or does she have genuine cause for concern? Judge for yourself by watching this excellent thriller from one of the great directors.
The TenantThe Tenant
Buy used from: $4.19
Along with “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Repulsion,” “The Tenant” makes the third in Roman Polanski’s loosely-connected trilogy about the horrors of apartment-dwelling in the big city. This one is not quite as accessible as the other two, though having Polanski in the lead role makes for bizarre, funny and great viewing.
PhantasmPhantasm
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.75
A bizarre, spooky film that plays out like a bad trip. If the Tall Man and the silver balls don’t give you nightmares, check your pulse.
The Evil DeadThe Evil Dead
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.26
Sam Raimi’s monumental fan favorite provides humor, gore galore and even a scare or two, all on a shoestring budget. A classic by all accounts.
Cat People / The Curse of the Cat PeopleCat People / The Curse of the Cat People
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.71
Very good pair of films from the early 1940's. These are not very scary, though they do build suspense very nicely. Simone Simon is excellent in both. They have held up well.
Cat PeopleCat People
Buy used from: $3.37
A remake of sorts of the 1942 classic. This one isn’t great, but I like it for Nastassja Kinski and for its feline grisliness.
Psycho (Collector's Edition)Psycho (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $9.94
Hitchcock and Perkins want to make your skin crawl, and they succeed. Still effective more than forty-five years after it was made.
Bram Stoker's DraculaBram Stoker's Dracula
Buy used from: $1.80
This movie should have been better than it was (could’ve done without Keanu Reeves), but it is well made and stylish enough to earn a spot on my list of favorites.
MagicMagic
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.74
Wonderful film with Anthony Hopkins as an unstable ventriloquist. Well worth the wait making it to DVD.
Haunted (Full Screen)Haunted (Full Screen)
Buy used from: $21.97
Spooky little ghost story that is very well done.
The Silence of the Lambs (Widescreen Special Edition)The Silence of the Lambs (Widescreen Special Edition)
Buy used from: $2.00
Suspenseful, taut thriller that everyone has seen. Watch it again!
Let's Scare Jessica to DeathLet's Scare Jessica to Death
Buy used from: $5.68
A very pleasant surprise if you are not familiar with this film. Sustains an unnerving mood throughout and unfolds its plot rather nicely.
Barney - Let's Play SchoolBarney - Let's Play School
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $2.71
I hadn’t heard much about this DVD prior to buying it, but wow, am I glad I did. The white-eyed Children of the Damned have nothing on the kids in this video; they’re like Danny Pintauro on Ritalin. To this day, I still won’t go near an elementary school.
Daughters of DarknessDaughters of Darkness
Buy used from: $6.55
Deliberate and hypnotic little horror film. Give it a chance.
Nosferatu: The Vampyre/Phantom Der Nacht (2 Disc Set)Nosferatu: The Vampyre/Phantom Der Nacht (2 Disc Set)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $13.92
Herzog’s entrancing version of the vampire legend. The 2-disc set contains different versions of the film, one shot in German and one in English.
Seven (New Line Platinum Series)Seven (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $1.88
Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt track a serial killer, who bases each slaying on one of the seven deadly sins. Very well-made, intense film with terrific performances and a memorable ending.
Invasion of the Body SnatchersInvasion of the Body Snatchers
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.28
OK, so this is actually science fiction. However, this 1978 remake is creepy and will induce dread. Top-notch acting, direction and effects make this movie an outstanding cinematic experience.
The HauntingThe Haunting
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.64
The best of several filmed versions of the Shirley Jackson novel, this one benefits from Julie Harris’ performance as a disturbed woman at home in Hill House.
Eyes Without a Face - Criterion CollectionEyes Without a Face - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $15.49
Georges Franju’s creepy masterpiece about a surgeon who goes to great lengths to restore his daughter’s beauty. Don’t miss this one.
City Of The DeadCity Of The Dead
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.98
There are many terrific aspects to this atmospheric tale of witchcraft in New England. A real gem.
Lemora - A Child's Tale of the SupernaturalLemora - A Child's Tale of the Supernatural
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.90
Poor make-up and weak performances cannot ruin this splendidly ethereal fairy tale. Mesmerizing!
Dead & Buried (Limited Numbered Edition - 50,000 copies)Dead & Buried (Limited Numbered Edition - 50,000 copies)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $5.60
It would seem the Pottersville Bluff Welcome Wagon needs to brush up on its hospitality skills a little bit, since they have a nasty habit of murdering visitors. This spooky and atmospheric tale of mutilated victims being brought back to life gets the royal treatment from the fine folks at Blue Underground.
Don't Look NowDon't Look Now
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.00
Miles apart from the common thriller, yet just as dreadful. Nicolas Roeg directs Daphne du Maurier’s story, which culminates in one magnificent ending.
Tourist TrapTourist Trap
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.99
Three attractive young women and their two male friends become stranded at a run-down museum, run by a lonely widower who happens to have telekinetic powers.
The ChangelingThe Changeling
Buy new: $5.98 / Used from: $2.72
Pretty classy suspense story with George C. Scott as a composer who moves into a house where a deceased resident attempts to contact him. Sophisticated, effective chills as he figures out why.
The Wicker Man (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Wicker Man (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $44.95
Not precisely horror, but here as the default category. We become as frustrated as Sgt. Howie as he searches for Rowan Morrison amongst the secretive residents of Summerisle.
