![]() | Girl with a Pearl Earring (movie tie-in edition): A Novel by Tracy Chevalier
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01 Although the Colin Firth and Scarlett Johannsen version of this book was good, it was not as good as what Tracy Chevalier helped me to imagine in my mind when I read her book.
![]() | MARY REILLY (Movie-Tie-in) by Martin
Buy used from: $0.01 The book by Valerie Martin was far superior to the movie (even with Julia Roberts and John Malkovich in it). I think Martin got across both Mary's love for her employer and her disgust at Mr. Hyde a lot better than the actors in the movie.
![]() | The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 I liked the movie version better. Why? Don't know really -- but maybe Ryan Gosling and James Garner had something to do with it.
![]() | Like Water for Chocolate: A Novel in Monthly Installments with Recipes, Romances, and Home Remedies by Laura Esquivel
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.87 One that I'm not really sure of! They're both great. Movie is exactly like the book....although the recipes at the beginning of each chapter add a tasty plus!
![]() | Moll Flanders (Barnes & Noble Classics) by Daniel Defoe
Buy new: $5.95 / Used from: $0.17 The movie version of this book is not anything like it. And in spite of Defoe's older style, I liked the book better than Robin Wright Penn's version. Although it had some good period costumes!
![]() | Hamlet (The New Folger Library Shakespeare) by William Shakespeare
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $1.48 I liked Mel Gibson's version of this play...but it's still quite good just on its own.
![]() | Wuthering Heights (1970)
Buy used from: $3.26 I liked this film version of the book. The Heathcliff was broody and passionate, just like I thought he'd be!
![]() | Forrest Gump (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.99 The bit of the book by Winston Groom I read made me like Tom Hanks' performance of him better than he was written in the book. But again, I saw the movie first. That might influence my opinion. And I'm a sap for love stories!
![]() | Jane Eyre
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $10.30 There are tons of Jane Eyre adaptations. This is not my favorite, but it's the only one I've seen. Orson Welles is not the Rochester I imagined, although he got Rochester's bad side right. I just didn't like him as Jane's man. Other than Jane and Rochester, it followed the book well enough. Elizabeth Taylor as Helen Burns -- spooky but good!
![]() | Of Mice and Men
Buy used from: $5.32 Steinbeck and this version of his famous story = a tie. I like them both. Gary Sinise, John Malkovich -- they work well together.
![]() | Bleak House
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $26.00 Gillian Anderson's performance in this miniseries made me want to go out and read the book. Can't make my judgement until I read it.
![]() | The House of Mirth
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.49 Haunting and lovely. Love it. Can't say I declare a winner, although I love Gillian Anderson's attempts in literary/period dramas!
![]() | The Age of Innocence
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.13 Scorsese did Wharton justice. No clear winner, although Daniel Day-Lewis is both very attractive and a sympathetic character.
![]() | Nora
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.94 Just thought I'd add this one. Interesting -- Ewan McGregor as James Joyce? I'm intrigued and will change my reaction to this once I've watched the film.
![]() | In Love and War
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $0.88 Chris O'Donnell as Hemingway? Not sure of the true story, but this is a good film regardless. "A Farewell to Arms" was based on Hemingway's experiences as an ambulance driver. I like both of them -- this film isn't necessarily a translation of it.
![]() | Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN (1994) - WIDESCREEN VERSION! - Rare Original DVD release! - Branagh, De Niro
Buy used from: $24.95 Yikes -- this film version meant to make the descriptions in the book there for our eyes to see. Not sure I liked those parts, or Helena Bonham Carter's death/ressurection, but De Niro was *very* good as the monster. Sympathetic but terrifying. Not one for horror flicks, think I could have lived without seeing this film. But I think that means Branagh did his job adapting it!
![]() | The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.50 No clear winner. Both Douglas Adams' original work and this movie are pretty darn good. Very funny.
![]() | Love Story
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.23 Movie version and film version are equally good. Heartbreaking.
![]() | Romeo & Juliet
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.93 Shakespeare's work stands on its own, but this film is meant to be more authentic for the period.
Baz L. had an interesting modern vision of the story -- but that's what he does best!
Any winner? Only those who love Shakespeare and want to watch many different versions of it. They're all good.
![]() | Somewhere in Time (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.46 Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour are good --hauntingly so -- in this film. Odd enough, I'd say this 1980 film is timeless -- as many times as I see it, it is just as good as the time before. I can't watch this too much as I'd never stop crying at the ending. Based on Matheson's book/in turn based on Jack Finney's book
![]() | Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.98 Don't think we could talk about books being made into movies without talking about Harry Potter? I love both. J. K. Rowling's books were the ones that first got me hooked on Harry...and Daniel Radcliffe kept me hooked after I read all the books.
Daniel as Harry is so cute and young!
I love all the casting choices.
![]() | Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.95 As I watch the films and read the books I regret that they can't make a movie long enough to include the whole book as Rowling wrote it, but I understand.
![]() | Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.69 I love how the whole Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) situation plays out in this film, and the Time-Turner. Tom Felton as Malfoy (he's great in the part) getting punched by Hermoine = a long-awaited answer to, "Won't anyone just punch that kid?" As a viewer you are right with Hermoine!
![]() | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Widescreen Edition)
Buy used from: $6.24 Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson) = Hogwarts Hunk.
Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort was a great choice. He gives me goosebumps. It's good to have a classically trained actor play him. I'm glad he took the part.
I like the special effects for the Triwizard Tournament.
![]() | Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $2.99 I was sad once I finished #7 but we still have 2 more films to look foward to! They keep getting better -- this latest film shows the trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermoine growing up. Matthew Lewis as Neville Longbottom = he keeps getting better and better in each film.
![]() | Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $6.20 It will be interesting to see this movie adaptation.
![]() | Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) by J. K. Rowling
Buy new: $23.09 / Used from: $2.20 Rowling's last Harry Potter book. *wipes a tear*. Glad that the moviemakers split it up into two films. Will be interesting to see them! Long Live Harry Potter!
