![]() | Astral Weeks by Van Morrison
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.74 My favorite album of all time.
A singer, songwriter, musician walks into a studio with some songs he wrote. He then proceeds with the help of some jazz greats and a string quartet to lay down in one take, a "masterpiece" of folk, jazz, classical and blues elements. When done, without looking back, he walks out the door...in another time...in another place.....

![]() | Kind of Blue by Miles Davis
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.37 Moody, atmospheric, a masterpiece of modality. A perfect record, quite possibly the best piece of music ever made.
|
![]() | Sunday at the Village Vanguard by Bill Evans Trio
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.99 Hauntingly beautiful. Wonderful interplay with the trio. The truly live feel replete with hubbub and the "klinking" of glasses puts you in the room for Sunday jazz in the Village.
|
![]() | A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $5.99 A sentimental favorite. Amazing jazz sound, the piano talks to you. A perfect marriage, as if Schulz Peanuts and Guaraldi's score were floating around out there waiting to meet.
|
![]() | Led Zeppelin II by Led Zeppelin
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.99 My favorite, by my favorite rock band.
Whole Lotta' Love, the first, and arguably the best, "heavy metal" song. The monster drum solo, Moby Dick. And the rest? Beautiful lyrical, acoustic songs; blues laden rock loaded with pummeling riffs. Imitated, never duplicated.

![]() | What's Going On by Marvin Gaye
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $4.17 Oh, mercy, mercy, me...the best soul album of all time. A timeless album of a time. This album is so real it hurts.
|
![]() | Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction
Buy used from: $5.25 Calling it the perfect hard rock album would not be far from the mark, but still wouldn't do it justice. Alternative Heavy Metal? Call it what you like, it's incredible.
|
![]() | Hot Rocks, 1964-1971 by The Rolling Stones
Buy used from: $2.90 This is exactly what a greatest hits album is supposed to be. The most popular songs of a band from the time stated in the title. The fact that it is the "greatest" rock n roll band in the world is the gravy.
|
![]() | Violent Femmes by Violent Femmes
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.98 Quirky, nervous, energetic... minimilistic musically and lyrically. One of a kind, great music, GREAT fun to listen to.
|
![]() | Who's Next by The Who
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.99 Loud, invigorating, tumultous, angry, sorrowful... and maybe a bit pretentious. Never has this band sounded better. Great words, great music, great rock n roll.
|
![]() | Songbird by Eva Cassidy
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.98 A real gem this one. What a beautiful voice. She could sing anything. Ethereal and haunting, even more so because she died tragically young.
|
![]() | Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.90 I love Bossa Nova, and this is it's defining moment. Smooth, easy, sexy....Beautiful tone from all the players, and Astrud's breathy voice...sigh
|
![]() | Marquee Moon by Television
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.66 One of the best things to come out of the NY punk scene. A break through one of a kind "guitar rock album". Nervy and tense garage rock, dazzling, majestic guitar interplay. The title song is brilliant!
|
![]() | The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses
Buy used from: $4.26 Coincidentally, I happened to be in London when I first heard this very British sounding band. After hearing, I immediately bought the cassette, and for two weeks it never left my "Walkman". Perfect!
The album's sound seemed so retro, yet so fresh, when released. It's pop, psychedelic, dance, acid house, all at once. No matter how you classify it, it's great from beginning to end.

![]() | September of My Years by Frank Sinatra
Buy used from: $4.99 Very melancholy. The theme is aging and regret. The tone of Franks' voice--somehow more mellowed by the years of whiskey and cigarettes--is haunting and beautiful. The album is, and is about, a fifty year old man looking back at his life. Whether a man, or a woman, if you like music that is sometimes sad, thoughtful and reflective, then you will enjoy this record.
