RushmoreRushmore
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.70
Margaret Yang is cooler than the other side of the pillow. Max Fischer is one of the most tragic protagonists in recent film history. "I wrote a hit play!" Bill Murray's best character ever, including Life Aquatic and even Caddy Shack.
Jim Breuer: Heavy Metal ComedyJim Breuer: Heavy Metal Comedy
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.43
For the fellas only, this stand-up vid will make you pee your pants before Crazy Jim even speaks a word into the mic. And even though Breuer is properly sideways on stage, you don't have to be to appreciate his sophomoric humor. It's offensive high school comedy at its finest. "Hey Heineken!...he acts like he don't know me."
Good Will Hunting (Miramax Collector's Series)Good Will Hunting (Miramax Collector's Series)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.08
"My boy's wicked smaaht." The best movie ever? If not, then certainly about a brilliant blue-collar kid from Boston who actually figures it all out. Don't miss Matt Damon's speech to the NSA about why he doesn't want to work for them.
Almost FamousAlmost Famous
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.03
"Hello, Ben Fong Torres" - "Well hellooooo." Cameron Crowe's best film? If not, the best film about a rock band ever (and yes, that includes Spinal Tap). Kate Hudson makes us weak in the knees, but only in this movie.
Gladiator (Widescreen Edition)Gladiator (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.76
"Are you not amused?" Yeah you are. You were glued to the movie. You hate Joaquin Phoenix and struggle to ever appreciate him in another movie (until he plays Cash 5 years later). You cried at the end. Fine, but I did.
Fight Club (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Fight Club (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $6.13
Ed Norton is on a level where only Sean Penn and Al Pacino can go. And this is one of Brad Pitt's four good movies (Kalifornia, Seven, 12 Monkeys). "I am Tyler Durdin."
Buffalo '66Buffalo '66
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $7.99
"This is a shifter car?"...."I drive luxury cars" Apparently the disturbed Vincent Gallo is as big a penis as he possesses, but this movie is poetic. Best indy love film ever?
Jerry MaguireJerry Maguire
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.62
"I'm not trying to make history here!" But you did, Tom. You made the only movie I can sit through with your mug on it. But damm, you slayed it. Not to mention Cuba Gooding Jr. He should have gotten an award for this (or did he?). Best pro sports -related movie ever?
Friday Night Lights (Widescreen Edition)Friday Night Lights (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.04
Realism upon realism. The musical score (Explosions in the Sky) is ridiculous. "You boys gonna win state this year?"
Kids (Unrated) [VHS]Kids (Unrated) [VHS]
Buy used from: $0.70
I don't know why Amazon doesn't have this dvd. I mean, I finally upgraded my dusty vhs copy to dvd thanks to Target. Anyway, Stephen King once called this the scariest movie he's ever seen. I agree. It's wicked, and more than 10 years later, still more current than anything else with regards to America's urban youth. "Stuuupes!"
Meet the Parents (Widescreen Special Edition)Meet the Parents (Widescreen Special Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.39
"I was able to salvage this wood from old Nantucket seaman's chapel." This is the best comedy in history. Period.
Office Space (Widescreen Edition)Office Space (Widescreen Edition)
Buy used from: $2.67
"Um, it's not a half-day or anything like that." One of two films that best explains post-university life in today's society. This movie is off the chain funny.
Swingers (Miramax Collector's Series)Swingers (Miramax Collector's Series)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.16
"Don't ever call me again." Vince Vaughan gave us a great preview of coming attractions with this 90's classic. Along the way we get to witness the cultures of sega hockey, goofball friends, the search for good times on a budge, and neurotic best pals.
Bottle RocketBottle Rocket
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $3.44
"Look at this guy. He looks like a little banana." Owen and Luke Wilson's start. Wes Anderson made something more than a classic, and started a cult. A massive cult with a million of us. Too bad most folks settle for Zoolander and Old School (still good films, mind you) with comedy like this around. James Caan - alltime.
The InsiderThe Insider
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.79
To those who believe the media has too much power in American society today, I give you The Insider. A gripping story of a 60-Minutes producer who partners with a frightened former tobacco exec long before the days of "The Truth .com" Pacino goes off. One of Russell Crowe's finest along with Romperstomper, Gladiator, and a Beautiful Mind.
Rising Son - The Legend of Skateboarder Christian HosoiRising Son - The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.99
This documentary will knock you out. Learn about the soul of alt/action sports vs the business, and one of the most influential of its legends.
Dark DaysDark Days
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.99
"Miss Peaches was the best, well not the best, but..." Any filmmaker who has the sack to use DJ Shadow's Endtroducing as his musical score before asking permission is cool in my book (of course Shadow agreed; he rules). But if you really want to freak out, watch the making of this film after you've finished the feature. You'll melt.
Band of BrothersBand of Brothers
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $29.00
This series tells one of the best war stories ever. It's like an amazing book where you can't stop turning the pages. You never want the episodes to end. Check out the cast too. It's stacked.
Boiler RoomBoiler Room
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $0.96
Giovanni Ribisi, Ben Affleck, and Vin Diesel together. "They should put you all on an island" - "Oh yeah well guess what? You're on it." This film will make you respect Triple X. It's a modern-day classic. Watch and learn."
Waking Ned DevineWaking Ned Devine
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.58
A film to watch with your parents, and maybe even their parents, that won't disappoint anyone in the room. Maybe its the motherland, or realizing that the elderly can be adorable, or something else, but this is magical comedy.
Trainspotting - Director's Cut (Collector's Edition)Trainspotting - Director's Cut (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $10.88
"If you won't see me again, I'm going to tell the police. See you around, then." Irvine Welsh, one of the great pop writers of our time (and a helluvan activitist I'm told as well) puts this one on the screen proper with some of the finest drama-comedy ever. Renton, Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie will give you tons to remember or forget. It's been a Top 10 choice of mine it came out.
Wedding Crashers (Unrated Widescreen Edition)Wedding Crashers (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.21
"Rule #17: No excuses, play like a champion." The best comedy of 2005 by far, and the best Wilson-Vaughan combo of them all (Starsky and Hutch being the only other?).
GoodFellasGoodFellas
Buy used from: $2.01
"Oh you think I'm funny? Do I amuse you?" Finally a film from what's arguably my favorite genre, Goodfellas is not to be toyed with. Ray Liotta must have really been into the Columbian pow to make this film so real.
Waiting for GuffmanWaiting for Guffman
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.79
"Well now that's too loud." All of these Chris Guest-Fred Wilard-Parker Posey flicks are worth the price of admission, but this is the original, and likely the funniest. Yeah Corkey.
He Got GameHe Got Game
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.21
I'm hammering this list out all in one sitting, and not even 1/2 way through my collection. But I could quit after putting this one up. "What ya'all um, Dominican or something?" - "Boriqua." The only thing Ray Allen does better than acting is draining treys in Seattle. My favorite Spike Lee joint.
Say AnythingSay Anything
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.49
My wife just walked in the room so I had to add a chick flick to the list. Watch this one on anniversaries or even pull it out on a first date to show her you care. Honestly though, one of the best love stories ever (and not a crier like The Notebook). "July's when he cries!"
ScratchScratch
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $7.99
See the best film about turntablism ever. And if you're a hip-hop DJ and you're a baller but you're not in this? Bye bye.
Style WarsStyle Wars
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $16.98
For the purists that saw the comments on Scratch and thought I was sleepin' on real hip-hop, I humbly present Style Wars, the definitive documentary of the lifestyle and the 4 elements (Wild Style? Also brilliant).
The Life of David Gale (Widescreen Edition)The Life of David Gale (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.71
Ho-lee. If you're not on your toes, this movie will drop you on your tailbone (since I can't say "sas" on Amazon). Get ready to become a staunch advocate against capital punishment. And Kevin Spacey reminds you why he's an OG. I don't even remember any quotes. Just take your pee break before you hit play and get ready for 90 minutes of amazingness.
Vice Guide to TravelVice Guide to Travel
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.77
Question authority. Question reality. Question what to do with your last 2 months on Earth because its over. This movie is utterly frightening, and yet still manages to make you laugh. Oh yeah, that's because Vice made it.
Children UndergroundChildren Underground
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $13.21
Wake up and smell the coffee. Take a weekend off from your decadent lifestyle, rent or buy this, Born into Brothels, Dark Days, and Blood Diamond, and realize that you're like the other 98% of us that aren't doing crap to make a difference.
Private PartsPrivate Parts
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $2.94
...then when you're done cleaning out your bank account to various charities, reward yourself with this highly offensive documentary-esque film about the life of Howard Stern and his brushes with CBS and a hilarious Program Director. This was the first date movie I took my girl to. Can't believe she even spoke to me after it.
Primal FearPrimal Fear
Buy used from: $1.99
Thought I already told you. Ed Norton. And just when you thought Richard Gere would ruin it all for you, he actually doesn't. One of his 2 good movies along with "Unfaithful."
Seven [VHS]Seven [VHS]
Buy used from: $0.01
Another one that has GOT to be available on dvd but doesn't seem to be, Seven is the most frightening film of all time. You can talk about Hostile or Silence of the Lambs, but this movie blows those away. Pitt/Freeman/Spacey - this is bananas. "At best you're a T-shirt."
The Office - The Complete Collection BBC Edition (First And Second Series Plus Special)The Office - The Complete Collection BBC Edition (First And Second Series Plus Special)
Buy new: $34.99 / Used from: $25.98
A Kiwi pal turned me onto this a couple years ago, before the US counterpart version was assembled. I won't debate which is better, but will only say that the British David Brent should be called butter, because he gets on a roll (role? aha) better than anyone in mockumentary comedy. "Oh, that's deragatory.'
Natural Born KillersNatural Born Killers
Buy used from: $0.84
The ultra-violent film that woke us up the hard way long before Grand Theft Auto or even Pulp Fiction. The is more than a film, its a moment in time.
Anchorman - The Legend Of Ron Burgundy (Unrated Widescreen Edition)Anchorman - The Legend Of Ron Burgundy (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $2.19
I'm guilt-ridden I've waited until the bottom of my list to add this, but maybe that's because..."I'm Ron Burgundy?" One of the best characters ever and only Will Ferrel's Chaz is even in the same ballpark. Character acting at its finest in the comic genre. Watch it over and over again - there's new things to laugh at every time.
In the Company of MenIn the Company of Men
Buy used from: $28.45
This is one dark film. "Listen to me!" Aaron Eckhart brings the heat like Lucifer himself, a social demon that hopefully won't remind you of anyone you know. If this doesn't disturb you, you are truly disturbed.
I am Sam (New Line Platinum Series)I am Sam (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.93
My gosh is this film brilliant. One of the many (New Jack City, Fast Times, State of Grace, Mystic River) that makes a case for Sean Penn as the best actor of our generation. Michelle Pfeiffer is spectacular as well. This movie could change you.
Menace II SocietyMenace II Society
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $2.57
In the early 90s, when everyone was going bananas for Boyz N The Hood, The Hughes Brothers produced this masterpiece. It's slammin. "I just spent 5 years in the joint." Watch and learn. Jada turns in a rock solid performance as the woman who gets it.
