Tintin: A Humble Chronology
By an Amazon.com customer
The Adventures of Tintin in the Land of the SovietsThe Adventures of Tintin in the Land of the Soviets by Herge
Buy used from: $14.97
The first adventure, presented here as it graced the pages of Le Petit Vingtieme in 1929.  Visually speaking, but a shadow of what was to come.
Tintin in the CongoTintin in the Congo by Herge
Buy new: $39.95 / Used from: $72.59
Not available in the U.S. in its modern form, presumably for the reason that it will offend those sensibilities more delicate (which it will).  Revised (colour) book available in French.
Tintin in America (The Adventures of Tintin)Tintin in America (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $2.73
Boy-howdy, or something to that effect.  The perils come fast and furious in this one.  If not the most moving of Tintin adventures, certainly effective at keeping one on the edge of one's seat.
Cigars of the Pharoah (The Adventures of Tintin)Cigars of the Pharoah (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $2.93
One of the best among the early books, or for that matter among all of them.  The story is engrossing, and the sequence involving the elephant is one of the sweetest.
The Blue Lotus (The Adventures of Tintin)The Blue Lotus (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $3.06
Arguably the creepiest of all the Tintin stories.  Sets the stage for Tintin in Tibet over twenty years later.
The Broken Ear (The Adventures of Tintin)The Broken Ear (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $3.00
Tintin to the rescue when an ancient South American fetish is stolen from a museum.  First appearance of General Alcazar and South America which were to play a part in many ensuing adventures.
The Black Island (The Adventures of Tintin)The Black Island (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $2.11
Simply gorgeous to behold, and funny to boot.  Introduces the arch-villain Dr Muller, who is to resurface in The Land of Black Gold and The Red Sea Sharks.
King Ottokar's Sceptre (The Adventures of Tintin)King Ottokar's Sceptre (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $4.10
Another involving mystery, this one set in the fictional Syldavia which was also to resurface.  First appearance of Bianca Castafiore.
The Crab with the Golden Claws (The Adventures of Tintin)The Crab with the Golden Claws (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $3.45
A Tintin milestone: the debut of Captain Haddock.  Poor Milou (Snowy) was delegated to something of a featured extra after this book!
The Shooting Star (The Adventures of Tintin)The Shooting Star (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $1.70
Starts with the imminent apocalypse and ends with meteorites that look like a cross between giant mushrooms and Easter eggs.  There is an engaging surreal, dreamlike quality about this one.
The Secret of the Unicorn (The Adventures of Tintin)The Secret of the Unicorn (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $3.80
The first half of the treasure-hunt tale.  Along with its sequel, it establishes many of the most fundamental pieces of the Tintin jigsaw.  A highlight of this particular story is Haddock's ancestry.
Red Rackham's Treasure (The Adventures of Tintin)Red Rackham's Treasure (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $2.05
The second, often very funny half of the treasure-hunt tale.  Debut appearance of Professor Tryphon Tournesol aka Cuthbert Calculus, and of Marlinspike Hall.
The Seven Crystal Balls (The Adventures of Tintin)The Seven Crystal Balls (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $3.95
Another cliff-hanger, and quite an eerie mystery.  Just when it seems things are at their direst, Calculus is kidnapped.
Prisoners of the Sun (The Adventures of Tintin)Prisoners of the Sun (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $3.16
The sequel to The Seven Crystal Balls.  Tintin and Haddock's efforts to find Calculus lead them to Peru, where they find their own lives in danger.  The resolution is one of the best and cleverest.
Land of Black Gold (The Adventures of Tintin)Land of Black Gold (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $2.98
A wonderful installment in the Tintin series.  Splendid and splendidly funny.
Destination Moon (The Adventures of Tintin)Destination Moon (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $2.00
The last and most nail-bite-worthy of the cliffhangers.  The "acting the goat" sequence is not to be passed by.
Explorers on the Moon (The Adventures of Tintin)Explorers on the Moon (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $3.95
The narrowest escape they ever have ... OR DO THEY? Yes, they do.  OR DO THEY?
The Calculus Affair (The Adventures of Tintin)The Calculus Affair (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $3.69
Absolutely wonderful.  Along with The Black Island and a few others, one of the nicest simply to look at.  Marks the first appearance of Jolyon Wagg (and Cutts the Butcher).
The Red Sea Sharks (The Adventures of Tintin)The Red Sea Sharks (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $2.54
A return to a menagerie of old friends and foes alike.  Something akin to a "Best of Tintin" in that sense, but the story is an entirely new one.
Tintin in Tibet (The Adventures of Tintin)Tintin in Tibet (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $3.41
The loveliest of all the Tintin adventures.  Full of wit and feeling: beautifully sad and funny all at once.
The Castafiore Emerald (The Adventures of Tintin)The Castafiore Emerald (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $5.82
What do you get when you cross Tintin with a sitcom? The Castafiore Emerald is easily one of my top three favorites, any day.
Flight 714 (The Adventures of Tintin)Flight 714 (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $3.50
Another of my personal favorites.  The frenetic energy of the story and dialogue make this one of the best ever.
Tintin and the Picaros (The Adventures of Tintin)Tintin and the Picaros (The Adventures of Tintin) by Herge
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $3.54
Fast forward eight years from Flight 714.  A bittersweet story, because of course it is the last completed one.
Tintin et l'Alph-Art (L'Euvre integrale de Herge) (French Edition)Tintin et l'Alph-Art (L'Euvre integrale de Herge) (French Edition) by Herge
Buy used from: $19.00
The last of all the Tintins.  Halts in midstep, because Herge died before he was able to complete it.  The end, and everything beyond it, is left to your imagination.
Tintin: The Complete CompanionTintin: The Complete Companion by Michael Farr
Buy used from: $105.60
For the true devotee.
