P2 (Widescreen Edition)P2 (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $1.29
(B-) Flawed but ultimately effective horror pic. It's too slow for most horror buffs and too much of a slasher for critics. Still, it's genuinely tense much of the time, though held back by uneven performances. Also, Nichols should get some kind of a "Most Cleavage in a Horror Movie" award.
The Constant Gardener (Widescreen Edition)The Constant Gardener (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $0.01
(B) A very well-acted and grittily made political thriller, which stands out nicely against the too slick counterparts. The story is a little obvious, though. Also, I'm sold: the West causes all African problems. We should just get out and let it mystically become a utopia.
FrogsFrogs
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $1.23
(C) Standard issue attack-of-nature pic is too slow and preachy to be much fun. Also, having the frogs be the ringleader is weak -- I wanna see them hopping people into oblivion.
TranssiberianTranssiberian
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $0.84
(A) An incredibly tense, intricately plotted pic from up and coming director Brad Anderson, who has shown himself adept at thrillers/horror pics, and who finally gets a truly first rate script. One of the best thrillers/suspenes pics of late, and a legitimately Hitchockian effort.
ChillChill
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $1.33
(D) Dreadful direct-to-DVD horror pic vaguely inspired by Lovecraft's "Cool Air." Every once in a while I watch one of these movies in a seeming effort to remind myself never to watch them. Ashley Laurence is still a fox, though, even if she hasn't much to do.
The QuietThe Quiet
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $1.98
(C) Lurid teen drama is comically self-important and bleak. It's as if Bergman made a trashy high school thriller. It's too self-consciously existential to be much fun, but work on a straight level either. On the other hand, it's never quite boring.
Rojo SangreRojo Sangre
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.99
(B-) Molina's comeback pic has some fun scenes and an enjoyable central performance, but it just kind of wanders along aimlessly.
Lurking Fear [VHS]Lurking Fear [VHS]
Buy used from: $8.24
(C+) Typical Full Moon production is made watchable mostly by the sometimes fun performances, particularly Combs, and the general campy good will it generates. Also, no movie with Ashley Laurence on screen for substantial time is a total waste.
Futurama: Bender's GameFuturama: Bender's Game
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $5.75
(B) As with the others, this is quite funny, even if it can't match the original series. Maybe the actual episodes will come together more fully.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Unrated Widescreen Edition)Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.97
(B+) Though only produced by Apatow, this is EXACTLY like the stuff he directs. Thus, it's very funny and vulgar with some heart, though it gets a bit overly Rom-Com at the end, as usual.
Wes Craven Presents TheyWes Craven Presents They
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.35
(B) Underappreciated horror pic. Yeah, the story never really comes together, but I thought it was pretty scary at times, which is a rarity.
Werewolf of London / She-Wolf of LondonWerewolf of London / She-Wolf of London
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.99
(B- for just Werewolf) Standard issue early talky horror, and thus pretty enjoyable. The more low-key makeup is probably preferable to the Wolf Man.
The Old Dark HouseThe Old Dark House
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $11.74
(B-) Long-lost Whale pic is somewhat unique for the period, as a black-comedy horror pic. It's a bit plotless at times, but the bizarre characters are fairly interesting.
The CottageThe Cottage
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $2.59
(C+)British horror-comedy has some amusing dialogue and a good performance from Serkis, but the plot it way too pieced together and it's uneven as a whole. Also, Ellison wears WAY too many clothes.
ShockerShocker
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.73
(C-) Deservedly forgotten Craven pic starts out watchable, but becomes increasingly stupid. The only interesting part is Mitch Pileggi as the crazy hick killer.
WarlockWarlock
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.10
(B+) Old-fashioned B-movie is a whole lotta fun, with a trio of enjoyable central performances and a surprisingly good script from then up and coming Twohy.
MagicMagic
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.98
(B-) A somewhat obvious psych-thriller carried by a very jittery performance from Hopkins and the always disturbing ventriloquist dummy.
FlourishFlourish
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $7.94
(D-) Incredibly tedious surreal pic which I only started watching because it was streaming for free and it stars my love Jennifer Morrison. I only finished watching it cause I never turn movies off. This pointless, plotless junk even made my beloved Morrison an irritant. (Don't worry, we've reconciled.)
The Onion FieldThe Onion Field
Buy used from: $3.35
(B) A very well crafted crime thriller with a near docudrama feel, a la In Cold Blood. Like that film, though, it's perhaps little to, well, cold and bloodless.
Tropic Thunder (Unrated Director's Cut)Tropic Thunder (Unrated Director's Cut)
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $2.67
(B) Rather amusing, though overlong, comedy/satire. That said, I can't understand why so many people think this kind of obvious Hollywood satire is innovative. Stars are prima donnas? Agents are slick and phony? Execs are loud and Jewish? Who Knew?!?!?
PiecesPieces
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $12.50
(B-) Gruesomely inept slasher is quite fun, and really delivers the chainsaw mayhem. Best part is when the investigator calls a physiology professor to look at a dismembered corpse, and asks him if the bloody chainsaw sitting next to the pile of limbs is the murder weapon. (Yes it is, surprisingly enough.)
The ChildrenThe Children
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $11.35
(B) Forgotten but highly eerie zombie variant with deadly atomic children who burn their victims to a crisp by hugging them. Better than it sounds.
Autopsy (1975)Autopsy (1975)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.42
(C-) Giallo has a promising opening, but proves to be lacking in style and gore. Hell, the naked ladies aren't even particularly attractive.
Tentacles [Region 2]Tentacles [Region 2]
Buy used from: $21.40
(B-) Jaws knockoff is surprisingly competent, with often reasonably convincing Octopus effects. (except the end. . .) It's a little slow at times, though.
Mongol: The Rise of Genghis KhanMongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $0.75
(B+) Visually stunning epic about Genghis Khan has production values and cinematography to match any American production. I look forward to the later films.
Baby BloodBaby Blood
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.39
(D+) Bizarre French gore film about an infected fetus that forces the mother to kill is inept and repetitious. The gore is lame, the attempts at satire/humor are terrible, and the lead actress's big tooth gap filled me with rage. Such your damn mouth, lady!
Troy (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)Troy (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $0.98
(B) Not w/o flaws, but it is spectacular looking, and it has a sort of straight forward melodrama to it that I enjoy. The tone approachs what you'd find in old-time epics.
Amityville II: The PossessionAmityville II: The Possession
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $0.48
(B) Delightfully over the top and often sleazy sequel. It's definitely more fun than the original, though it kinda runs out of steam by the end with the Exorcist knockoff material.
Warlock: The ArmageddonWarlock: The Armageddon
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.90
(B-) Still has some of the charm of the original, but the characters aren't as entertaining this time around. It's still fun, though.
The Spiral StaircaseThe Spiral Staircase
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $4.31
(C) Has some decent noir-ish visuals, but it's too slow and talky, particularly for such a brief film, and the story/mystery just isn't that intriguing.
Paranoid ParkParanoid Park
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $3.45
(B-) Ultra-arty and uneventful teen drama from Van Sant. Seems like the sorta thing I might hate, but it casts a moody kind of spell in spite of the thin story.
Icons of Horror: Hammer Films (2-disc) (The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb / The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll / Scream of Fear / The Gorgon)Icons of Horror: Hammer Films (2-disc) (The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb / The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll / Scream of Fear / The Gorgon)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $16.11
(B- for all but Mummy, C+) A bunch of standard issue Hammer films, which means they're well made and entertaining, if not their best stuff. The Gorgon is the best, because it's got an atypical setting, plus Cushing.
Dance of the DeadDance of the Dead
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.39
(B-) Amusing horror-comedy with some fun low-budget gore. The humor doesn't all work, but it's worth a watch.
Training DayTraining Day
Buy new: $5.49 / Used from: $0.01
(B-) A fairly entertaining cop drama, and Washington is far more fun here than with his boring heroes. On the downside, it's too sensationsalistic, even for me. They coulda told the same story, basically, but a bit less improbably.
Interview with the VampireInterview with the Vampire
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $5.24
(C+) A good-looking and quite watchable pic, but not enough happens. That said, I generally hate tragic/romantic vampires, so it's better than it might've been.
