Les Misérables (Signet Classics)Les Misérables (Signet Classics) by Victor Hugo
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $1.35
I discovered Les Miserables (unabridged) version in junior high, and was completely blown away. The pages are now yellowed and worn but every time I find something new, something to take away, and that is the best you can hope for in a novel.
CosmicomicsCosmicomics by Italo Calvino
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $2.00
The first Calvino book I read was: If on a winter's night a traveler... a challenge to read but worth the effort. Invisible cities should make this list, but if I had to choose one Calvino book it would be this one. There's a whimsical surreal beauty to Cosmicomics. You instantly fall into his bizarre magical world.
The Count of Monte Cristo (Penguin Classics)The Count of Monte Cristo (Penguin Classics) by Alexandre Dumas père
Buy new: $9.75 / Used from: $5.59
revenge, injustice, forgiveness, hope against all odds...all these themes make for a compelling read.

Wuthering Heights (Barnes & Noble Classics)Wuthering Heights (Barnes & Noble Classics) by Emily Brontë
Buy used from: $5.18
I had an English instructor who once said love could be thought of in two ways: the world described by Emily Bronte in Wuthering Heights or the world described by Charlotte Bronte in Jane Eyre.I would probably fall under the former.
1984 (Signet Classics)1984 (Signet Classics) by George Orwell

Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $3.23
I had bad experiences with English courses, call it overexposure to Robert Frost poems. No offense, he just doesn't do it for me. And then I read Octavia Paz and I suddenly couldn't get enough poetry in my life.

Not sure if it was appropriate to read @ 13yrs. but my reading was never monitored. I wonder, would it be horrible of me to say I liked the Marquise character the best? A villain you love to hate.
