All Quiet on the Western FrontAll Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
Excellent war novel! Powerful, moving, exciting. Not too much in the way of historical events, so this is a good read whether or not you've studied WWI yet.
The Catcher in the RyeThe Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Buy new: $9.79 / Used from: $3.42
A must-read for all you teenage delinquents out there. Though it was published more than fifty years ago, it still resonates with today's youth (well, some of them).
Things Fall Apart: A NovelThings Fall Apart: A Novel by Chinua Achebe
Buy new: $7.92 / Used from: $0.76
Starts off slow and somewhat uninteresting, but the ending is a real kicker! A great exploration of Africa and African culture.
The ChosenThe Chosen by Chaim Potok
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Amazing. A beautifully written story about two very different characters. A coming of age story, a fascinating look into the lives of Jewish people in Brooklyn during and following WWII, an absolutely brilliant book. The sequel, The Promise, is very much recommended.
The Bean Trees: A NovelThe Bean Trees: A Novel by Barbara Kingsolver
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
One of my all-time favorite books. A lovely story, one that paints a stunning picture of the American Southwest.
Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard RodriguezHunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez by Richard Rodriguez
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $1.53
So boring! I feel like I'm missing some bigger picture within this novel; could someone please tell me what it is? Nicely written, just not at all interesting to me.
Romeo And JulietRomeo And Juliet by William Shakespeare
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.41
A true classic. Chock full of symbolism and wit, with the unbelievable fairy-tale love story we all know. I'm recommending this translation of the book because it's side-by-side with the original, easy to understand, and accurate. You may or may not like the actual story; it's not for everyone. But give it a read anyway, at the very least just to say you have.
MacbethMacbeth by William Shakespeare
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
Yet another Shakespeare masterpiece. A riveting exploration of murder and its consequences that still applies to the modern day (though hopefully not to your life!). Again, this translation of the book is well-done, by far better than most.
Nineteen Eighty-FourNineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
Buy new: $10.37 / Used from: $4.81
A gripping story of political intrigue, mystery, and the real-life horror of a government that sees all. Regardless of your political beliefs, this is an absolute must-read book. It pulls you in, scares the pants off of you, and leaves you a changed, much more paranoid person for the rest of your life.
Animal FarmAnimal Farm by George Orwell
Buy used from: $3.03
Merely mediocre, in my opinion. A one-sided look into historical events, though the symbolism is rarely matched in other novels. Excellent writing, but depending on your political beliefs, the plot may or may not hit home.
Welcome to the Monkey House: StoriesWelcome to the Monkey House: Stories by Kurt Vonnegut
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $5.95
Divine! A mostly hilarious romp through various periods of time and settings, yet also very thought-provoking. This book has something for everyone; read it and it will not disappoint!
Parable of the SowerParable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler
Buy new: $10.07 / Used from: $4.09
Depressing, in the most provocative way. A real wake-up call. Don't let the science fiction label scare you off; this book is a real gem--emotional, horrifying, spiritual, powerful, with just a pinch of very realistic science fiction. Highly recommended, though it may give you nightmares (I know it did for me!).
A People's History of the United States: 1492 to Present (P.S.)A People's History of the United States: 1492 to Present (P.S.) by Howard Zinn
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $8.00
A monolith read, but vital to any student's understanding of the United States. Does an excellent job of exploring both sides of every story throughout the U.S.'s history, so to speak.
HiroshimaHiroshima by John Hersey
Buy new: $7.50 / Used from: $0.01
A transfixing book. The story of what happened in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 is indeed a hard one to read (and probably an even harder one to relate), but one that is important to understanding WWII. A terrifying, but very much recommended read.
Nothing But the Truth (and a few white lies)Nothing But the Truth (and a few white lies) by Justina Chen Headley
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
A mildly interesting book, good for younger teenage girls. Nothing too powerful or heavy, though the novel's examination of racial stereotyping is, I suppose, worth the read. Good if you have nothing better to read (which I hope you do!).
The Metamorphosis (Norton Critical Editions)The Metamorphosis (Norton Critical Editions) by Franz Kafka
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $3.45
A deeply complex novel, with such heavy psychological undertones and overtones that it can be rather hard to understand (even the experts debate about it's inner meaning!). A quick read, but very powerful. A lonely, depressing sort of book; this one's not for eveyone.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X (Penguin Modern Classics)The Autobiography of Malcolm X (Penguin Modern Classics) by Malcolm X
Buy used from: $8.99
Amazing. A true classic that everyone should read at least once. This book explores race in America like no other.
The Jungle (Enriched Classics)The Jungle (Enriched Classics) by Upton Sinclair
Buy new: $5.95 / Used from: $2.25
A tough read for some, but incredibly interesting if you can get into it. Gripping and horrifying, it's a historical novel not to be missed.
Slouching Towards Bethlehem: Essays (FSG Classics)Slouching Towards Bethlehem: Essays (FSG Classics) by Joan Didion
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $6.15
Again, not everyone's cup of tea. A literary exploration in essays of American 1960s culture, but in complex and not-so-obvious ways. Excellent, in my opinion.
Going After CacciatoGoing After Cacciato by Tim O'Brien
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $1.00
One of the stranger Vietnam war novels out there. Good for travelers and those willing to let go of some logic. Interesting, but odd.
A Tour of the CalculusA Tour of the Calculus by David Berlinski
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.01
Assigned by a math teach. Good for calculus students who are more into english; explains the math in literary form.
Fast Food NationFast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $2.41
A shocking expository work. Very different and much better than the movie, incredibly well-researched, fascinating and gross.
The Great GatsbyThe Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Buy used from: $1.72
Another great in literature. Fairly short read, but complexly layered. Provides a glimpse into not-so-mainstream society of the 1920s. Amazing.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Puffin Classics)The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Puffin Classics) by Mark Twain
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $0.67
A mixed bag. Simple in plot, yet the dialected dialogue can pose some challenges. A children's tale that is considered by many to be the classic American novel. Controversial in nature, but that makes it all the more worth it.
The Scarlet LetterThe Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Buy new: $7.94 / Used from: $3.16
A famous novel about adultery in a "pure" society. Excellent, if not obvious, use of symbolism. Highly historical, riveting, and classic lit to boot!
The Kite Runner Illustrated EditionThe Kite Runner Illustrated Edition by Khaled Hosseini
Buy new: $18.87 / Used from: $14.20
A great modern book, even if your English teacher doesn't agree it's a literary great. An absolutely fascinating tale of secrets, redemption, and the mixings of many cultures.
Candide (Dover Thrift Editions)Candide (Dover Thrift Editions) by Voltaire
Buy new: $1.50 / Used from: $0.01
Another classic, though to be honest I'm not totally sure I liked it. A satire that will leave you either laughing until you cry or just plain confused.
FDRFDR by Jean Edward Smith
Buy new: $13.60 / Used from: $6.85
A mammoth read! Good for any historical buffs out there, but this biography of FDR is of a deadly length that will leave most of us common folk gasping for air at around pg. 12.
