The Essential KISS List
By an Amazon.com customer
KissKiss by Kiss
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.32
The original and quite possibly the band's best album. Almost every KISS concert is littered with songs from this record. An absolute must-have.
Hotter Than HellHotter Than Hell by Kiss
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.06
A great follow-up to their first album. KISS flexes their hard-rockin' muscles on this one. Pretty heavy for an album released in 1974.
Dressed to KillDressed to Kill by Kiss
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.62
While not featuring as many setlist staples as the first two albums, it's still a quality album and very well produced. Obviously, "Rock and Roll all Nite" is the main attraction here.
DestroyerDestroyer by Kiss
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.49
Destroyer is the most successful studio album by KISS as it features three of their most notable songs: "Detroit Rock City", "Beth" and "Shout it Out Loud". Destroyer isn't one of my very favorite KISS albums, but it is undeniably good and a favorite for many, many KISS fans and has to be considered 'essential'.
Rock and Roll OverRock and Roll Over by Kiss
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.14
A straight-ahead rocking album from the band. Plenty of good tunes on this one...
Love GunLove Gun by Kiss
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.35
The last of the great KISS studio albums from the 70s, KISS gives us their final full album of hard rock until 1982's Creatures Of The Night. Love Gun is very much the sister album to Rock and Roll Over -- only even better.
Paul StanleyPaul Stanley by Paul Stanley
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.57
Of the four KISS solo albums, Paul Stanley's is the closest to what a KISS album sounded like at that point. Musically, Paul Stanley has always been the heart & soul of KISS and he proves it on this album.
Ace FrehleyAce Frehley by Ace Frehley
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.97
This was truly Ace Frehley's coming out party as an artist. Prior to this record, Ace only sang two songs with KISS. Ace displays a wealth of musical creativity on this album and rocks hard from beginning to end.
Lick It UpLick It Up by Kiss
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $6.50
While this doesn't sound anything like KISS from the 70s, this album is quite good. Lick It Up is a straight-up heavy metal album featuring some of Gene Simmons' best songs in years. Paul Stanley offers some great material as well.
AnimalizeAnimalize by Kiss
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.48
Animalize is an energetic, hard-rocking, 80s metal album. Paul Stanley especially shines on this one with five exceptional songs. This album also features some of Eric Carr's finest drumming as well.
AsylumAsylum by Kiss
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.50
This is often a love-it-or-hate-it album in the KISS community. Personally, I love it. Paul Stanley delivers another terrific effort. Asylum feels like a sister album to Animalize -- although I like Asylum a bit more.
RevengeRevenge by Kiss
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.00
Revenge is EASILY their best album since Love Gun. It's often recognized by KISS fans as the only studio album released after the first six studio albums to be as good as those. It captures some of the same forumla that made the early 70s albums great, but rocks as hard as any KISS album ever.
MTV UnpluggedMTV Unplugged by Kiss
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $2.45
Unplugged captures one of the biggest and most important moments in KISStory. This is the only show to feature six KISS members on one album and even sharing one stage for two songs. Musically, KISS delivers like never before. Easily one of their very best CDs -- period.
Alive! Box SetAlive! Box Set by Kiss
Buy new: $24.97 / Used from: $22.79
I could list all three Alive CDs separately, but why bother? This set has Alive!, Alive II and Alive III all in one for an average of $12 a pop. That's better than what they cost individually! As a bonus, you get the unreleased, original KISS Alive IV CD which has been re-named The Millennium Concert for this set since KISS opted to dub their Symphony concert, Alive IV.
GoldGold by Kiss
Buy new: $14.97 / Used from: $6.95
For those who have no KISS albums, this is the way to go. For around $15, you get 40 of KISS' very best songs between 1974 and 1982. This is a perfect album to start with or a great CD set for a KISS fan to have in the car.
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Kiss, Vol. 220th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Kiss, Vol. 2 by Kiss
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $2.50
This is probably my favorite KISS 'hits' compilation. I really grew into being a KISS fan during the 80s and many of these songs were favorite of mine -- and still are. They're all re-remastered and are a perfect compliment to the KISS Gold double-CD set.
Kiss - eXposedKiss - eXposed
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $4.34
This was KISS' first long-form video and it was a homerun. Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and a host of attractive 80s models will entertain you in between a mix of the band's MTV videos and classic concert clips. All these years later, it's still my favorite DVD of theirs.
Kiss - Konfidential & Xtreme Close UpKiss - Konfidential & Xtreme Close Up
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.46
I mainly recommend this due to the KISS X-treme Closeup aspect of this two-video DVD. The band gives an honest history of the band and has great classic clips sprinkled throughout. KISS Konfidential is a bonus as it mainly features a video version of their Alive III concert.
KISSology: The Ultimate Kiss Collection, Vol. 1: 1974-1977KISSology: The Ultimate Kiss Collection, Vol. 1: 1974-1977
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $11.93
Four complete classic KISS concerts from their golden age are featured on this DVD set. That's enough reason alone to own KISSology.
KISSology: The Ultimate Kiss Collection, Vol. 3: 1992-2000KISSology: The Ultimate Kiss Collection, Vol. 3: 1992-2000
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $14.83
This is my favorite of the three KISSology sets. Here you get their monumental MTV Unplugged show as well as concerts from their 1992 Revenge Tour, Reunion Tour, Psycho Circus Tour and Farewell Tour. The audio and visual quality of these shows are far superior to the shows found on the prior two KISSologies. Personally, if I could only have one DVD from KISS, I'd choose KISSology 3.
