Great Outer Space Films

Serenity (Collector's Edition)Serenity (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $14.40
The movie follow-up to the Fantastic and sadly ill-fated Firefly TV series, Joss Weadon's vision of the future is probably more realistic and thoughtful than most writers ever allow for. In addition, the ship doesn't make noise in space. Right on.
Alien (The Director's Cut)Alien (The Director's Cut)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $4.99
Set on a mining ship sent to investigate a distress signal Alien provide an outstandly frightening view of the future. If aliens are out there, I sure hope they're not like these ones. Alien is one of those films that changed a genre. With cutting edge special effects for the time, tight writing and thrilling action, Alien is probably one of the greatest sci-fi horror suspense films ever made.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $4.91
The best of all the Star Trek movies, The Wrath of Khan is a great character drama with great action sequences and special effects. Of course, that it's Star Trek at its finest is icing on the cake.
Dune (Widescreen)Dune (Widescreen)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.95
Dune is one of those series that I tend to equate to Lord of the Rings. It has depth and substance. The 1984 film version of the original novel has fantastic art and costume design and great special effects. Aside from the dumb looking space ships, this film captured my imagination and never let go.
The Last Starfighter (Widescreen Collector's Edition)The Last Starfighter (Widescreen Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $3.84
"Greetings, Starfighter." One of the first movies to use computer generated effects for almost all of its SFX scenes, this is a hokey little film about a video game player who's gaming skills save the galaxy. The last movie with Robert Preston (Music Man) its special effects were fantasic for their time and to some degree still hold up ok, even now in the days of the 3d FX super movies.
The Fifth Element (Ultimate Edition)The Fifth Element (Ultimate Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $2.49
With its wild aliens and crazy protagonists romping across the galaxy to save it, this film is not exactly realistic, but at the same time, the busy skyways of New York almost seem possible to anyone who's seen the current ones on the ground.
Titan A.E. (Special Edition)Titan A.E. (Special Edition)
Buy used from: $1.00
Earth is gone and the survivors of the genocide seek a mythical device that can create a new Earth for them. A mixed media movie, Titan AE mixes computer animation with traditionally drawn art. What results is a lushly artistic film that is a bit low on plot strength. Still, the space scenes are gorgeous and how often do you get to see the Earth shatter and take out the Moon anyway?
OutlandOutland
Critically panned and mostly overlooked, this film starring Sean Connery as a sheriff on a Jovian mining colony caught my attention from the first viewing. Very few films take such a realistic perspective of what the future might be like. Ok, so it's got some dumb stuff in it. Still, there's no other film like it.
2001 - A Space Odyssey (Two-Disc Special Edition)2001 - A Space Odyssey (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.50
In some ways an overlong film with philosophical intent that many viewers never got, its realism, muscial score and fantastic effects make this future projected in the 1960's almost real enough to be possible.
Red PlanetRed Planet
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.70
Red Planet envisions a future where a polluted, overpopulated Earth needs to terraform Mars to provide living room. Unfortunately, the team on the planet has gone silent. A rescue ship sent to find out why experiances its own issues (including a bezerk robot), resulting in some great action scenes. A fun view of the future, Red Planet is a great watch.
