![]() | The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1) by Rick Riordan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.22 This is the only title I had read prior to the nominations. I really enjoyed this book, though I like number 2 a bit better. Ive read this book with two groups of fifth graders. One group loved it, the other group had difficulty getting through it.

![]() | Rules (Newbery Honor Book) by Cynthia Lord
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $0.09 I just finished Rules, it's the second book I've read from the list. This is a great book. The story is held together nicely by the rules. It' a story of growing and doing what's right in your heart.

![]() | Oh Rats! The Story of Rats and People by Albert Marrin
Buy new: $12.74 / Used from: $0.30 This is my least favorite thus far. However, it is interesting and informative none-the-less. I learned more about rats than I really wanted to know. The section on plague helped me to understand how rats carry and spread diseases. Non-fiction is not my preferred genre, but being the lone non-fiction choice this year, this may end up being a favorite for those that appreciate the genre.

![]() | Alabama Moon by Watt Key
Buy new: $11.52 / Used from: $0.53 This is the fourth book from the list that I've read. After reading all the descriptions, this was the book that I was most looking forward to reading. It did not disappoint me. This is a phenomenal book. It's the story of 10 year-old Moon. Moon finds himself alone in the world. He knows how to survive, but is knowing how to survive enough. This is one of the best books I've read in a long time.

![]() | Gossamer by Lois Lowry
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.00 Lois Lowry is, in my opinion, one of the best story tellers of today. While this isnt The Giver, it is a beautiful work none-the-less. The Littlest, one of the dream weavers, is learning her craft the hard way, trying to build the strength of John, an eight-year-old abuse survivor now living in foster care.

![]() | Chronicles of Ancient Darkness #1: Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01 This was a good read. At times I felt weighed down with the vocabulary, but as a whole I enjoyed this journey. The theme, struggling to survive and save the world, is familiar to most us. The twist Ms. Paver gives us, Toraks ability to talk with wolves, is sure to be enjoyed by many.

![]() | The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
Buy new: $14.61 / Used from: $12.98 I've been looking at this book for a year. It has been highly recommended to me. I knew it had won several awards. Finally, I read it. It is a really good book. The pictures add so much to the story. The 500+ pages are sure to hold some off, but the text is fairly easy to navigate and the pictures really take up a good share of the book.

![]() | Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer
Buy used from: $8.95 Geared more towards the young adult group than the other books I've read from the list. This "what if" story took hold of me and wouldnt let me go. Mirandas diary recounts the events of her family and friends as they experience a world like ours that is thrown into drastic upheaval. I would have liked to see more of a scientific explanation for the goings on, but I enjoyed this book as is.

![]() | Project Mulberry by Linda Sue Park
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01 Not my favorite, but a great book none-the-less. Julia and Patrick's silkworm project is so much more than what it seems. This book offers up many other topics, such as racism, sibling relationships, and fears. The between the chapters dialogue between the author and Julia is a great addition and should serve readers an opportunity to glimpse how characters and plots are created.
