![]() | Battleship Potemkin (The Ultimate Edition) (2pc) (Full B&W)
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $18.74 Eisenstein Masterpiece.
Not only is this considered Eisenstein's best work, it was considered for many years the greatest movie ever made before "Citizen Kane" overtook it. To most modern movie-goers, this film is all but forgotten and its a shame. Great cinematography and a great, true story highlight this film. The scene with the baby carriage on the stairs is unforgettable.

![]() | Ivan the Terrible - Pt. 2
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $9.83 Eisenstein Great Work.
This film stands as a benchmark for the synthesis of all the elements of film making. Working with limited script material due to the U.S.S.R.'s harsh censorship, Sergei creates a masterpiece with his second installment of Ivan. The great actor Nikolai Cherkasov reprises his role as Ivan the Terrible and really puts his stamp on the role.
|
![]() | Ivan the Terrible - Pt. 1
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $14.49 Eisenstein Great Work.
The advent of the "Ivan the Terrible" series sets the tone for the rest of the installments. With great collaborations with Nikolai Cherkasov, Eisenstein gets the most out of his restrictive working conditions. It also has a great score and brilliant cinematography.
|
![]() | Alexander Nevsky
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $14.52 Underrated Eisenstein Film.
My personal favorite of Eisenstein's films, Nevsky has all the elements of a classic. Surprisingly, an enrapturing story, it contains one of the greatest battle sequences of its time and is scored very well. Again, Cherkasov stars and shines brilliantly. Don't be turned off by the subtitles or unadulterated Russian patriotism, it is really a good film.
|
![]() | Jules and Jim - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $19.77 Truffaut Masterpiece.
"Jules and Jim" is not only Francois Truffaut's most well known piece, it is also his best. The ultimate threesome is peppered with irony, eccentricity, obsession, and promiscuity. Indeed, the auteur at his best.
|
![]() | The 400 Blows - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $14.95 Truffaut Great Work.
One of the few social commentaries that works well as a great film. Centered around Jean-Pierre Leaud's Antioine Doinel, the film focuses on the social effects of loneliness and isolation. One of the best installments of the French New Wave, "400 Blows" might be the best.
|
![]() | Fahrenheit 451
Buy used from: $11.75 Truffaut Great Work.
Surprisingly good adaptation of the Ray Bradbury novel, 451 shines as a grand portrayal of the futuristic dystopia. Truffaut favorite Oskar Werner gives his most mature performance and Julie Christie shines alongside him.
|
![]() | Two Short Films by François Truffaut (Les Mistons / Antoine et Colette)
Buy used from: $6.02 Underrated Truffaut Film.
"Antoine and Colette" is a continuation of the Antoine Doinel character brought to life in "The 400 Blows." Despite a few peppered negative reviews when it came out, the entire Antoine Doinel anthology is worth your time.
|
![]() | 12 Angry Men (50th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $7.24 Lumet Masterpiece.
No film has ever used actor's emotions to carry a film more than "12 Angry Men." Unequivocally the best courtroom drama (or is it jury room drama?), Henry Fonda gives his all time best performance in this film. The cast includes Lee Cobb, John Fiedler, E.G. Marshall, Jack Warden, and Jack Klugman.
|
![]() | Dog Day Afternoon
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.20 Lumet Great Work.
Again, Sidney Lumet manages to take a film shot mainly on one set and make a masterpiece out of it. Helped out by a brilliant performance by Al Pacino, the words "Attica" will always ring in the back of our minds. This film has spawned many imitations but no equals.
|
![]() | Network (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $12.97 Lumet Great Work.
The cutthroat battle for ratings and television's mad prophet mark this movie. A fantastic satire marked by a cast including Faye Dunaway, William Holden, and Robert Duvall; it is Peter Finch who rightly steals the show. A very quotable masterpiece.
|
![]() | Long Day's Journey Into Night
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.99 Underrated Lumet Film.
This film about drug addiction, suffering, and disappointing home life is depressing but very good. Katherine Hepburn, as usual, manages to steal the show and make the movie her own. Eugene O'Neill's fantastic script fuels Lumet's project.
|
![]() | One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $5.31 Foreman Masterpiece.
Simply one of the greatest films ever made, it's a masterpiece in anyone's book. Not quite a faithful adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel, the script still shines. Jack gives his best performance and the often forgotten Louise Fletcher makes arguably the best villain in cinema.
|
![]() | The Firemen's Ball (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $13.86 Foreman Great Work.
Milos Foreman shows off his talent early in this Czech language film. This film proves Foreman deserves the title of best dual-language director. Working with many restrictions, he manages to turn out a biting commentary. Best film ever made from Czechoslovakia.
|
![]() | Amadeus - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $6.47 Foreman Great Work.
Often considered too dry (read boring), Amadeus is anything but. The epic of the child prodigy is not exactly historically accurate, but the story told is grand. F. Murray Abraham gives a solid performance as the villain Salieri. Music isn't bad either.
|
![]() | Loves of a Blonde - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $13.87 Underrated Foreman Film.
This is another Czech masterpiece, one that is too often forgotten by many movie goers. A touching film that manages to show life in rural Czechoslovakia in the 60's, "Loves of a Blonde" is a great drama and runs the emotional gamut.
|
![]() | The Third Man - Criterion Collection (2-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $22.99 Reed Masterpiece.
This film ushered in a new era in the thriller genre. Suspenseful, dark, and boding; Reed manages to create an atmosphere in this film that has yet to be duplicated. Orson Welles is great, and Joseph Cotten gives his best performance.
|
![]() | The Fallen Idol - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $15.95 Reed Great Work.
This is another great Reed thriller. The use of point of view is elevated to new heights in this film and Reed is helped by a great script. This, alongside "The Third Man" puts Reed alongside anyone in the mystery genre.
|
![]() | Oliver! [Region 2]
Buy used from: $29.00 Reed Great Work.
This is Carol Reed's take on musicals, and his only true masterpiece in the genre. It was an oscar favorite at the time, and won 5 awards, including best picture and best director. A visual feast, it is one of the better musicals ever made.
|
![]() | The Agony and the Ecstasy
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.39 Underrated Reed Film.
Little known today, this film was a commercial and critical hit at the time of its release. Charlton Heston starred and gave a sound performance for a limited actor. Rex Harrison helped him out and really stole the show in this one. Not exactly historically accurate, but it isn't bad.
|
![]() | Red (Three Colors Trilogy)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.55 Kieslowski Masterpiece.
This is unequivocally Krzysztof Kieslowski's best work, not to mention Irene Jacob's. The finale of the Three Colors trilogy, the French installment ties all the others together. The script is fantastic and fate plays a central role in the film. This film is both thought-provoking and enjoyable.
|
![]() | The Decalogue (Special Edition Complete Set)
Buy new: $79.95 / Used from: $45.00 Kieslowski Great Work.
This film is really a set of 10 short made for tv movies; but, don't let that fact fool you that it is any less of a masterpiece. This collection is a modern-day interpretation of the 10 commandments, but each episode is not about 1 commandment, rather a mixture. Perhaps the greatest made for tv series ever.
|
![]() | The Double Life of Veronique - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $19.97 Kieslowski Great Work.
Another fine performance by Irene Jacob, who carries the film, Kieslowski brings all the elements of classic film together. The script is dynamic, and like many Kieslowski films focuses on fate and destiny. The film is complex, but one of his best.
|
![]() | Blue (Three Colors Trilogy)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.25 Underrated Kieslowski Film.
The first installment of three colors is second best only to red, and much better than white. Like the others, color and mood play a large part in the film, and create a persisting atmosphere. It seems the Kieslowski's best works came toward the end of his life, as this was the start of his last set of works.
|
![]() | The Graduate (40th Anniversary Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $7.98 Nichols Masterpiece.
This is the quintessential young angst film. Dustin Hoffman is at his best and Anne Bancroft redefined the role of the older seductress in this film. The timing in the film is perfect and was truly definitive of its time.
|
![]() | Catch-22
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.44 Nichols Great Work.
This film epitomizes the dark comedy, and Alan Arkin is great in the lead. Nichols manages to tell his story, adapt the famous novel, find humor in the absurd, and show the horrors of war all in one film. A great supporting cast includes Orson Welles, Martin Basalm, Martin Sheen, Jon Voight, and Anthony Perkins.
|
![]() | Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $14.51 Nichols Great Work.
Again, Nichols manages to create a memorable middle-aged woman with a touch of evil about her. Elizabeth Taylor is grand, and Richard Burton keeps up with her in a cast of just half a dozen. A dinnertime drama is the setting of an inner-marriage squabble and an alcohol fueled frenzy.
|
![]() | The Birdcage
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.38 Underrated Nichols Film.
Really, this comedy is vastly underrated. One of the funnier films of the 1990's, "The Birdcage" is a comedy of errors set around the home of a gay cabaret owner. Nathan Lane and Hank Azaria upstage Robin Williams, and Gene Hackman is hilarious as the burdened Republican politician. Indeed, this is a worthy remake.
|
![]() | Casablanca (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $5.00 Curtiz Masterpiece.
For my money, the best film ever made. The acting, the script, the direction, and especially the ending; they all work. No one plays the tough guy with a heart of gold like Bogey. What could have been nothing more than a propaganda B-movie is so much more.
|
![]() | The Adventures of Robin Hood (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $12.25 Curtiz Great Work.
This film is the precursor to future family favorites like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Pirates of the Caribbean." Errol Flynn brings such swagger and grace to the role that no one else could have played it as well. Olivia de Havilland and Claude Rains also shine.
|
![]() | Yankee Doodle Dandy (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $15.50 Curtiz Great Work.
Admittedly, this is not my favorite film, but it is good enough to appreciate. Cagney, again not a favorite, is good in this film and carries the load. This was the breakout film of Micael Curtiz, the old Hungarian. At the time of its release it was considered a critical success.
|
![]() | Captain Blood
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $6.77 Underrated Curtiz Film.
This film was even underrated in its day, getting snubbed by the academy's nominating committee (Curtiz finished second for best director as a write-in). It is also another great pairing of De Havilland, Basil Rathbone, and Mr. Flynn. It is truly a quality adventure film.
|
![]() | Giant (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $11.98 Stevens Masterpiece.
George Stevens hit his peak with "Giant." One of the grandest epics of all time, it is most commonly known for being James Dean's last film. Dean's Jett Rink is one of the all-time great and complex anti-heroes in films. Liz Taylor and Rock Hudson are fantastic as well, and the setting in Texas is icing on the cake.
|
![]() | A Place in the Sun
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $4.35 Stevens Great Work.
This film is often overlooked now, but won 6 oscars, including best director, in 1951. Mellor's script, Edith Head's costumes, and the acting combo of Liz Taylor, Montgomery Clift, and Shelley Winters makes this a masterpiece of the 50's. It's a classic worth seeing.
|
![]() | Gunga Din
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.84 Stevens Great Work.
The combo of Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. couldn't have been more perfect in this adventure film. Sam Jaffe also shines as Gunga Din. Brilliant screenwriter Ben Hecht turns in one of his best scripts, and the camera work was quite advanced for the 1930's.
|
![]() | Penny Serenade
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.49 Underrated Stevens Film.
This sentimental melodrama is better than advertised; I believe some of its bad rap comes from the fact that the film is public domain. Cary Grant and Irene Dunne give mature performances, and the script is more realistic than most. Be ready to shed some tears.
|
![]() | Memento (Widescreen Two-Disc Limited Edition)
Buy used from: $2.09 Nolan Masterpiece.
This is one of the few films made after 2000 to be completely original, and it is probably the best film of the decade. Shot in reverse order with a surprise ending (or beginning). Guy Pearce gives his all-time best performance and adds a rough, realistic, and human quality to the role.
|
![]() | Batman Begins (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.36 Nolan Great Work.
Please don't dismiss this film because it is a superhero flick; it is, but it is a very, very, good superhero flick. Christian Bale is hauntingly dark and edgy, and Michael Caine and Cillian Murphy give solid supporting performances. This film doesn't rely on CGI, but rather the quality of the performances and Nolan's artistic direction.
|
![]() | The Prestige
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.92 Nolan Great Work.
Christopher Nolan came back from "Batman Begins" to form another great collaboration with Christian Bale. This film is very dark and stylized, and more about obsession and competition than magic. The ending is a twist, both heartwarming and gut-wrenching.
|
![]() | Following
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.00 Underrated Nolan Film.
Nolan's feature length debut is a very solid beginning to a career. This film's script, which he also wrote, is a little creepy as a young man follows random strangers around; but it is very good. Working on a low budget, Nolan shows why he is one of the best modern directors with a promising future.
