![]() | The Vikings
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.49 When I was a kid I hated Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, AND Ernest Borgnine, and yet here's a movie I love that stars all three of them. Go figure.
![]() | The 13th Warrior
Buy used from: $2.44 This one made an Antonio Banderas fan out of me. It has it all; men with swords, Arabs, Norsemen, cannibals--you'd be hard pressed to find a movie that gives you more for your money than this one does!
![]() | The Legend of Zorro (Widescreen Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.00 Since we're talking about Banderas, he also made a damned fine Zorro, at least in the first of the two films. Add Catherine Zeta-Jones and an equally gorgeous black Andalusian horse and you've got yourself a good time with some nice stunt work and pretty fair swordplay too!
![]() | Red Sonja
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.02 Co-starring Ahnold, this is one for the feminists. Neilson holds her own too. She's much better with a sword than most of the bimbos in this type of film. Her sizeable presence helps a great deal. Also features Ernie Reyes Jr. as a spoiled prince. If you give this one half a chance it can be fun.
![]() | Asoka
Buy used from: $5.40 Speaking of FUN, WHO'S FOR A LITTLE BOLLYWOOD?! This stars Shahrukh Khan as the legendary titular emperor. Khan sings, dances,& fights his way to the throne of 3rd century Magadha & then sets his mind on real conquest only to suffer remorse & dedicate his life to spreading the teachings of Buddha. Try it, you'll love it, really!
![]() | Blind Fury
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $3.47 Rutger Hauer in a comedy. Right. After I got over that scary idea, I had a great time. This is basically a modern version of a blind Japanese swordsman trying to rescue an old friend from evil-doers. Except that this Japanese swordsman is Rutger Hauer, who is actually quite believable with a sword, and very funny too.
![]() | The Lost Empire
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.71 A made for tv movie with the cast of Journey to the West, but with a spin. And an American hero of course. But Russell Wong is here as Monkey so all is not lost. If you haven't seen it, its worth a watch if only because this isn't normal western tv fare.
![]() | The Magic Sword
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.78 This is for all those who want to feel a burst of affection for the late 50's and early 60's when sweet little movies like this were possible. Basil Rathbone's last.
![]() | Conan the Barbarian - Collector's Edition
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $3.93 Ahnold's first, with a script co-written by Oliver Stone. I love Robert Howard and Conan, so at first I loathed this version. But its grown on me over time.
![]() | Conan the Destroyer
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $4.93 Of the two Conan films, this is the one I prefer. It seems to have a bit more imagination. Plus I'm tired of movies that always take place in deserts, so it was nice to see one with a different location for a change.
![]() | The Beastmaster (Special Edition)
Buy used from: $27.99 A very likeable sword and sorcery film with everything I look for, with the exception of locales. Singer may seem a bit too American for the role, but that's splitting hairs when you consider the problems that many other films have had.
The one real problem is that this film has about 3 endings. Every time you think they're done, they're not.
![]() | The Court Jester
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.93 Strictly for laughs, but Danny Kaye's sword fight with Basil Rathbone ain't all that bad. I loved this movie as a kid and I still do.
![]() | Blade (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $0.73 Okay, I know when you guys saw this list you were expecting lots of blood and stuff and you're probably all disappointed. Sorry.
![]() | The Deadly Breaking Sword
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.75 I'm trying to apologize here, But I've always preferred empty hand fighting to weapons...unless its exotic stuff like in LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF CHINA! Now THAT was a turn on.
![]() | Ladyhawke
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.77 After all, the title of this list is MEN WITH SWORDS... NOT GREAT SWORDPLAY FLIX.
LADYHAWKE is a wonderful little movie, almost totally ruined by the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. Whoever came up with that idea should be hunted down and shot. There's your violence for this list.
![]() | Clash of the Titans
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.00 I haven't mentioned this Harryhausen film anywhere else, so let's put it in here.
We can hardly blame Ray for the restrictons that monetary concerns placed upon him. This was his last film, and I don't care what anyone says. I like it.
![]() | The Flame and the Arrow
Buy used from: $22.45 This is what Burt Lancaster was really meant for! FORGET ALL THOSE DRAMATIC ROLES AND ALL THAT OSCAR CRAP! Here he's Dardo the Arrow, the Robin Hood-esque leader of a peasant revolt against the Hessians who wins the love of a noblewoman in the process. Now that's entertainment! PLUS HIS OLD CIRCUS BUDDY NICK CRAVAT IS HERE FOR GOOD MEASURE.
![]() | The Crimson Pirate
Buy used from: $21.75 Plenty of pirates with swashes to buckle, the bounding maine, Christopher Lee in a small part, and Burt and Nick Cravat in drag! OH YEAH. IF YOU GUYS DON'T LIKE THESE MOVIES, THERE IS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH YOU.
![]() | The Mark of Zorro
Buy used from: $7.48 As a last thought, just in case you want something to compare Banderas to, here's the version with the famous duel between Tyrone Power and real life fencer Basil Rathbone. Rumor has it that these two hated each other so much that doubles were used when an actor's back is to the camera.
![]() | Zorro, the Gay Blade
Buy used from: $34.95 I had to include this one, which is really very entertaining, if you can get past the shreiking of Ron Liebman and Brenda Vacarro.
![]() | Legendary Weapons Of China / Shaw Bros / Special Edition
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $9.99 As I said earlier, this one's a turn on! WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE? You've got a comedic set-up with Fu Sheng as a fake practicioner of magical kung fu, and then you have a tour de force ending with the master himself Liu Chia-Liang bringing out most of those legendary weapons and showing us what to do and how to do it!
There's much to like here!
![]() | Taras Bulba
Buy used from: $20.00 Yul Brynner and Tony Curtis as Cossacks. This is the film during which Tony met his new plaything and left wife Janet Leigh.
![]() | Nomad: The Warrior
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.78 Kazakhstan finally has something that represents it better than BORAT! This is a first class epic, lush, lavish, everything that such a film should be. Plenty of fight scenes too. I'd like to credit all the actors, but can only remember Jason Scott Lee and Mark Dacasos. The others are way to ethnic for quick recall. Subtitled, but you won't care.
![]() | Hercules Unchained
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $2.58 This is where all the Italian sword and sandal flicks began as far as American audiences were concerned. Remember the days when we thought Reeves looked deformed? These are still a lot of fun. Be on the lookout for MACHISTE AGAINST HERCULES IN THE VALE OF WOE from Something Weird.
![]() | Hercules The Legendary Journeys - Season 3
Buy used from: $26.49 Season Three was my favorite year for this show. It featured alternate universe stories in which Herc was the evil tyrant, Ares was the God of Love,Xena was an air-headed slut, and Joxer was a noble hero.
![]() | Romulus and Remus
Steve Reeves AND Gordon Scott star in this mythological account of the founding of Rome. AKA DUEL OF THE TITANS.
![]() | Scaramouche
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $10.60 We all prefer the versions we grew up with and this one is mine even though it is hardly faithful to its source material. Lots of fun and swordplay abound.
![]() | The Pirate
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $10.69 Okay, much less swordplay here than from the others on the list and a lot more song and dance--but its GENE KELLY! ONE OF JACKIE CHAN'S HEROES, ALONG WITH BUSTER KEATON!
![]() | Hearts and Armour [VHS]
Buy used from: $3.76 A mystically, romantic tale of Moors and Christians either at each other throats, or falling in love with each other depending on the sexes of those involved.

![]() | Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $2.73 Probably not a grain of authenticity in it, but WOW, does it look great! Its exciting too.
![]() | Black Sunday (aka The Mask of Satan)
Buy used from: $12.00 |
