![]() | Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers: A Professional Image Editor's Guide to the Creative use of Photoshop for the Macintosh and PC by Martin Evening
Buy new: $30.99 / Used from: $16.97 Written by a full-time UK-based commercial and fashion photographer and CS3 alpha tester, this book covers issues most digital photographers face, from workflow issues, color management, color correction, and retouching.
Highly recommended as the first Photoshop book for a photographer.

![]() | The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby
Buy new: $31.49 / Used from: $23.50 Lighter in tone (and far less in-depth) than Martin Evenings Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers, but it covers much of the basics of what most photographers need to know about Photoshop. If you prefer a more step-by-step if less detailedapproach than a conceptual one, this is a good alternative to Martin Evening's book.

![]() | Professional Photoshop: The Classic Guide to Color Correction (5th Edition) by Dan Margulis
Buy new: $37.79 / Used from: $32.39 In my own opinion, the single best book on color correction and sharpening on the market today. Its not an easy read, but the techniques in this book should enable anyone to vastly improve the quality of their prints.
VERY Highly recommended

![]() | Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS3 by Bruce Fraser
Buy new: $31.01 / Used from: $18.00 Whether you use Adobes Camera Raw for your Raw conversion or not, this book covers how to get the most from Adobes BridgeCS3s file browser--as well as from Raw images. It also deals with issues any photographer using RAW files should understand, from exposure, to camera calibration, workflow issues, metadata, and more: it's by far the best guide to Raw conversion I've run across.
|
![]() | Adobe Photoshop Restoration & Retouching (3rd Edition) by Katrin Eismann
Buy new: $34.64 / Used from: $21.99 Katrin is one of the leading Photoshop writer/experts today, and all of her books are all highly approachable (and recommended). This one is an excellent guide to basic color correction, retouching, photo repair/restoration, and more.
|
![]() | Real World Image Sharpening with Adobe Photoshop CS2 by Bruce Fraser
Buy used from: $4.38 A specialized book, but one which explains when, why, and how to sharpen images for best results.
Supposedly for CS2, it deals with the fundamentals, and shouldn't need updating for a large number of versions.
|
![]() | Photoshop LAB Color: The Canyon Conundrum and Other Adventures in the Most Powerful Colorspace by Dan Margulis
Buy new: $34.64 / Used from: $22.52 The LAB color model offers significant advantages over RGB or CMYK for many tasks. While not primarily aimed at the novice, it covers many techniques to quickly and easily improve images in less time than in RGB or CMYK, as well as fix some problems that are impracticalif not impossibleto fix in RGB or CMYK.
I do recommend reading Dans Professional Photoshop before this one, however.
|
![]() | Photoshop Masking & Compositing by Katrin Eismann
Buy new: $37.79 / Used from: $31.98 A comprehensive guide to masking and compositing. It clearly explains what you need to know about dealing with multiple images in a single, final image, in a very readable and approachable manner. (Stephen Romaniellos Photoshop CS3 Channels and Masks Bible is a much weaker alternative.)
|
![]() | Real World Color Management (2nd Edition) by Bruce Fraser
Buy new: $40.94 / Used from: $25.98 This is the guide if you want to master Color Management. If you just want a photography-specific guide, Tim Greys Color Confidence may be a better choice; its somewhat more approachable, albeit with much less detail. I cant recommend Michael Kierans Photoshop Color Correction; it had too many errors.
|
![]() | Photoshop Channel Chops by David Biedny
Buy used from: $79.50 Written for Photoshop v4 and long out-of-print, this book is the best guide to Photoshop Channels.
If you want to understand the fundamental underpinnings of Photoshop, or want to learn how to create highly accurate selections without having to draw them, this is the book.
Kelbys recent The Photoshop Channels Book isnt bad, but this is betterif you can get it at a reasonable price.
|
![]() | Skin: The Complete Guide to Digitally Lighting, Photographing, and Retouching Faces and Bodies by Lee Varis
Buy new: $26.39 / Used from: $18.99 This is a specialized book, in that it primarily discusses only photographing and retouching people. By doing so, however, it gave the author room to include things which are often neglected in other texts. I dont recommend it as a first or only Photoshop book, but it has enough material not covered elsewhere to make it quite worthwhile adding to a collection.
|
![]() | Adobe Photoshop CS2: The Art of Photographing Women by Kevin Ames
Buy new: $26.59 / Used from: $12.99 As with Lee Varis Skin, this is another specialized text, and one that focuses primarily on photographing and retouching people. Spending somewhat less time on the capture side, a little less on color correcting, and much more time on retouching than Skin, its a well-balanced book for its topic, IF the techniques are used in moderation.
|
![]() | Commercial Photoshop Retouching: In the Studio by Glenn Honiball
Buy new: $29.67 / Used from: $18.30 Primarily for, as the title says, commercial retouching. Glenn uses different techniques than either Katrin Eismann or Suzette Troche-Stapp, and shows how to get excellent results in a variety of circumstances.
|
![]() | The Glitterguru on Photoshop: From Concept to Cool by Suzette Troche-Stapp
Buy used from: $64.94 More on the business of high-end retouching, theres some excellent techniques discussed. She demonstrates a number of techniques that arent widely discussed elsewhere.
