Key scenes were filmed at Griffith Observatory in the spring of 1955. In the observatory forecourt, there is a bust of James Dean as acknowledgment to Rebel Without A Cause as the "first to portray the observatory as what it is and to contribute positively to the observatory's international reputation."

The final scene happened at the Griffith Observatory.

Wild and wacky climax atop the Griffith Observatory when the character Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy) resurfaced.

The exterior of the haunted insame asylum was created out of a combination of matte paintings and minatures. According to visual effects man Bob Skotak, "The only part of the house that was physically real was the entrance. For that, we used the entrance to the Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles."
