My favorite classical recordings of 2008
By an Amazon.com customer
Beethoven: Piano Sonatas, Vol. 4Beethoven: Piano Sonatas, Vol. 4
Buy new: $38.98 / Used from: $22.99
The final installment in Paul Lewis's Beethoven sonata set drew raves around the world and made almost every "best of 2008" list. Here is playing of intelligence, grandeur and understatement. A magnificent set.
Bruckner: Symphony No. 3Bruckner: Symphony No. 3
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $6.37
I didn't grade this one all that high when I first heard it but it grows on me more with repeated listening. I think Norrington is onto something with his period conception of Bruckner.
MYSTERIOUS ISLAND Soundtrack Bernard HerrmannMYSTERIOUS ISLAND Soundtrack Bernard Herrmann
Buy used from: $109.95
William Stromberg's full score to Herrmann's "Mysterious Island" can hold a candle to the composer's shorter collection. It is the best film score I heard this year, is one of the best CDs, and is the best complete film score I've purchased since I found Rozsa's full score to "The Green Berets" a couple years ago. This CD has a remarkable 61 tracks and includes music cut from the film.
Bizet: L'Arlesienne; CarmenBizet: L'Arlesienne; Carmen
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $20.71
Marc Minkowski's go round with familiar Bizet wasn't as good as his fabulous Offenbach CD from 2007 but it was among my better buys of the year. The packaging is a beautiful thick booklet full of artistic renderings.
Bach: Partitas Nos. 2-4Bach: Partitas Nos. 2-4
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.99
Murray Perhaia's Bach made almost as many "best of 2008" lists as Paul Lewis's Beethoven for similar reasons -- playing of patrician elegance mixed with passion and an understanding of the intellect, heart and soul of J.S. Bach.
Chopin: The 2 Piano Concertos [Hybrid SACD]Chopin: The 2 Piano Concertos [Hybrid SACD]
Buy new: $20.98 / Used from: $13.19
This received split reviews from critics but I enjoyed it. The soloist has a wonderful fluid line appropriate to Chopin, the orchestra and conductor chip in nicely, and the super audio sound is exceptionally natural. It is probably the best-sounding CD I heard last year.
Vincent d'Indy: Symphony "Italienne"; Concert pour piano, flute, violoncello et cordesVincent d'Indy: Symphony "Italienne"; Concert pour piano, flute, violoncello et cordes
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $66.92
This delightful d'Indy coupling was one of the best CDs I bought last year. The "Italian" symphony had never before been put on disk. A second Italian symphony; who knew? What a surprise!
Bax: Symphony No. 6; Irish Landscape; Etc.Bax: Symphony No. 6; Irish Landscape; Etc.
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $10.99
This is, quite simply, the best Bax album in the world. It is the one anyone that loves symphonic music should own. The Lyrita sound from 30 years ago is a marvel that compares favorably to anything made today.
Bax: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 5Bax: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 5
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $11.95
This beautifully-recorded re-release from Lyrita helped send me on a Bax boomlet in 2008. They say Handley's set from five years ago made Bax in America but the Lyrita recordings are better, in my opinion, with fuller sound, more romantic playing, and greater passion.
Die Geschopfe Des Prometheus Op.43Die Geschopfe Des Prometheus Op.43 by L.V. Beethoven
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.65
Bringing this German import to USA was one of Amazon's better decisions. It used to be available on Vox and is still one of the best recordings of Beethoven's only ballet.
Mozart: Coronation Mass; Motet 'Exsultate, jubilate'; Vesperae solemnes de confessore; Ave Verum corpus [Hybrid SACD]Mozart: Coronation Mass; Motet 'Exsultate, jubilate'; Vesperae solemnes de confessore; Ave Verum corpus [Hybrid SACD]
Buy new: $20.97 / Used from: $67.87
I bought this as a practice aid when I performed the "Coronation" mass at Easter and it stuck with me. It's not as good as my favorite Mozart released in 2007 but is still a dandy. By virtue of making this list, it's the best new choral CD I purchased in 2008. (There was a better one from Vivaldi but it was released in 1994.)
Smetana: Complete Orchestral WorksSmetana: Complete Orchestral Works
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $12.06
I didn't like this as much as some critics but it was among 2008's better new releases that I heard. It's a fine collection even if the main items don't rank with the best.
Bach: Aus dem Klavierbüchlein für Anna Magdalena BachBach: Aus dem Klavierbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $3.92
This 1969 version of Anna Magdalena's Notebook was a pleasant suprise. The best thing is it's the complete book, sung exceptionally well by a baritone. The playing is a little old fashioned but that's part of its charm. Sorry there's no illustration; the art on the packaging isn't much to look at anyway.
