My favorite Christmas gift for 2007. The action in this book is incredible. It's a board book, but even older children are captivated by it. This book is my favorite on this list.

Bear and BallBear and Ball by C. Wright
Buy new: $5.95 / Used from: $0.01
Great transition from fabric books to sturdy board books. The binding on this book has helped this very well-used book hold up perfectly. The text is simple and accessible the pictures are clear and engaging. Well-loved by my child and a good gift because it is not one the recipient is likely to have already. I also like "Bear and Kite". Buy them both!
Ten Little LadybugsTen Little Ladybugs by Melanie Gerth
Buy new: $7.88 / Used from: $0.01
He wore this book out--and so many of his friends love it to death too. This is a sensational book. All books of this type have enormous appeal with the raised characters and the cut out holes in the pages. You can see this type of book with stars, monkeys, fish...pretty much anything, the common element are the holes in the pages and the raised plastic pieces.
Pajama Time!Pajama Time! by Sandra Boynton
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $0.01
Pretty much anything by Sandra Boynton is a great pick.
My First Baby SignsMy First Baby Signs by Linda Acredolo
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
I love this series. I think the Baby Signs book for parents is crap. The baby signs book is educational and children love looking at the baby faces. I would buy as many books in this series as I could. (My first, Mealtime, Signs for Animals)
My First SignsMy First Signs by Annie Kubler
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
This is good for you to expand your repetoire. I think the two most useful signs are "more" and "all done" ane once you see your child signing to you, it is easy to learn more. Give those two signs a try and see where it takes you.
Puppy and Friends: Touch and Feel (Touch & Feel)Puppy and Friends: Touch and Feel (Touch & Feel)
Buy used from: $0.64
This touch and feel series has a book about a duck, a puppy, a kitten and I forget the fourth. The photographs, the simple text and the opportunity to make animal sounds make this a very early favorite. I think at 12 months he was loving at a stage where photos, repitition and tactile books were big favorites.
Bunny And MeBunny And Me by Adele Greenspun
Buy used from: $0.01
Beautiful pictures, winning text, easy to read aloud, very good for the earliest days of read aloud. I like this because it's uncommon and a great very early book to share with a child.
Good Night, GorillaGood Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann

Look for the little mouse with the banana on every page. I got this as a shower gift and I love it.
My Very First Mother GooseMy Very First Mother Goose
Buy new: $15.63 / Used from: $0.01
Iona Opie has the "definitive" mother goose books (sanctioned by Esme who I adore) however, any board book that has mother goose rhymes will be a big hit around 16 months or so...
Richard Scarry's Biggest Word Book Ever!Richard Scarry's Biggest Word Book Ever! by Richard Scarry
Buy new: $26.37 / Used from: $16.49
This was a book for the dinner table because of it's size. When they are having their language explosion, for some reason, kids seem to love this book.

Bunny My HoneyBunny My Honey by Anita Jeram
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $0.01
This has been an enduring favorite in our home He likes stories about Mommy coming to the rescue. I'm fine with that. Like "Catch Me Catch Me" this is for a child about 18 months at least.
Goodnight Sun, Hello MoonGoodnight Sun, Hello Moon by Reader's Digest
Buy used from: $0.01
Clever layout, gentle story, nice observations of nature, setting sun, fireflies. A great book.
Autumn Walk (Small Seasons)Autumn Walk (Small Seasons) by Ann Burg
Buy used from: $0.21
Not as common, not a core book, but I think the gentle familiar pace of getting dressed, going outside, what do you see and then the fun language "Crackle Rustle Crinkle and Crunch" make this a universally appealing book. Plus I like to talk about the changing seasons.
The SnowmanThe Snowman by Raymond Briggs
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $3.93
Better for a child that is 3 this is a book without words, but great pictures and a wonderful, gentle story. Excellent.

Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.93
I love this story. I love to read it out loud. I might like it more than him. But he does like it. Also, we like "The Tale of the Two Bad Mice." Beatrix Potter was a talented naturalist and when he gets older I'll reintroduce her and her nature sketches.
The Very Hungry CaterpillarThe Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Buy new: $7.91 / Used from: $0.08
I'm not a huge Eric Carle fan. He's got too many books and only some of them are as charming as very hungry caterpillar, but this is definitely worth all of the accolades it has been awarded.
Little Fur Family Deluxe EditionLittle Fur Family Deluxe Edition by Margaret Wise Brown

This is as warm and charming as Autumn Walk and Goodnight Moon combined. A wonderful book. Garth Williams, the Little House on the Prairie illustrator, illustrated these books. Just great.

Go, Dog. Go! (Beginner Books)Go, Dog. Go! (Beginner Books) by P.D. Eastman
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
When I had my book baby shower and asked people to bring their child's favorite baby book, this was the overwhelming favorite. And when Brady was old enough to like it (over 12 months, can't remember, he was talking by then) he adored this book.
Catch Me, Catch Me! A Thomas the Tank Engine Story (Pictureback(R))Catch Me, Catch Me! A Thomas the Tank Engine Story (Pictureback(R)) by Rev. W. Awdry
Buy used from: $0.01
This book with the "catch me" theme captured his imagination. Kids hit this point where they want to name everyone and everything and Thomas fulfills that with it's suite of characters. My son is not super into trains or any particular character, but he is super into the phrase "Catch Me, Catch Me" and he loved learning the names of the trains.
Shake My Sillies Out (Raffi Songs to Read)Shake My Sillies Out (Raffi Songs to Read) by Raffi

Sturdy book, a good touch a feel book, great illustrations and this book takes it one step further, inviting the child to pat with face, cheek, feet, hands, etc. This is a book that will hold interest into age two when the other touch and feel books will not.

This one is for you too. My book is dog-eared. Esme is incredibly talented and good at what she does. The Trelease book and the Esme book complement each other.
The Runaway BunnyThe Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
When my son runs away from me when I am trying to dress him, I call him "my runaway bunny" because of this book. It's a very affectionate, sweet book.
Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book)Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book) by Dorothy Kunhardt
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.32
The other Pat the Bunny inspired books by the same publisher do not approach the original in perfect execution of a great concept. The only downside is that if you give this as a gift, the new parents probably already got it from someone else.
Goodnight MoonGoodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
The perfect bedtime book.
