1995: Marc Jacoby, one of his generation's successors to leading men like Stephen Douglass and William Johnson, was noticed for his dashing Ravenal. This recording features 1962 winner Robert Morse as Cap'n Andy, who was replaced by nominee John McMartin before Broadway. WINNER: Matthew Broderick, How to Succeed In Business...

1996: The phenomenon that was Jonathan Larson's updating of La Vie Boheme was guided by Adam Pascal's soulful Roger, who headed a wonderful cast.

1997: Robert Cuccioli threw himself into the duel title roles in Frank Wildhorn's pop-opera take on the Robert Louis Stevenson chiller.

1997: The late Daniel McDonald almost managed to make the fishy circumstances surrounding his pilot character who suddenly shows up at a dance marathon work. WINNER: James Naughton, Chicago.

1998: Douglas Sills made a flashy debut as the swashbuckling hero of another Frank Wildhorn spectacle, by way of French lit this time. WINNER: Alan Cumming, Cabaret.

1999: This DVD preserves Adam Cooper's nominated performance in Matthew Bourne's all-new production of Tchaikovsky's classic ballet (Musical? No, ballet...).

2000: Craig Bierko received notice for his take on Harold Hill, which sounded suspiciously like an unused take of Robert Preston looping all his dialogue from the movie...

2000: Mandy Patinkin reportedly got far too into his role as the dangerous vaudevillian Burrs, but his performance on this recording is deeply unsettling for all the right reasons. Christopher Walken in The Dead wasn't recorded. WINNER: Brian Stokes Mitchell, Kiss Me, Kate.

2001: Kevin Chamberlin's Horton the Elephant was a fondly remembered highlight of this Flaherty-Ahrens treatment of the Dr. Seuss stories, a flop in its Main Stem production that has become very popular in schools and regional theatres.

2001: Patrick Wilson got his big break as the leader of a gang of intrepid, unemployed guys who go from Buffalo to the buff for some cash. WINNER: Nathan Lane, The Producers.

2002: Sondheim vet and highly respected actor John McMartin got top billing as the Narrator/Mysterious Man, and a leading nomination in the bargain. Amazingly, he's never won the award in a 50-plus-year career.

2003: Antonio Banderas made a strong debut in Maury Yeston's version of the Fellini film 8 1/2, playing the director Guido Contini and comparing favorably with predecessors Raul Julia and Marcello Mastroianni.

2003: Another revival, this one of the "Impossible Dream" Don Quixote musical, featured a stellar star turn by Brian Stokes Mitchell as the knight errant. John Selya is not on the Movin' Out recording. WINNER: Harvey Fierstein, Hairspray.

2004: Respected actor Alfred Molina made a decidedly gentile Tevye in David Levaux's reimagining of this classic, but he got the nomination anyway.

2004: John Tartaglia created a searching college graduate, Princeton, and a ridiculously confused investment banker, Rod, mostly out of using his hands, voice and wicked wit to manipulate some felt and give it life. WINNER: Hugh Jackman, The Boy From Oz.

2005: John Lithgow's French Riviera con man provided the just-so understatement to complement the wild shenanigans of his costar and the evening's winner. Gary Beach in La Cage Aux Folles was not recorded. WINNER: Norbert Leo Butz, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
