The New Best Recipe: All-New EditionThe New Best Recipe: All-New Edition by Cook's Illustrated Magazine
Buy new: $20.47 / Used from: $19.95
They aren't kidding. This cookbook is wonderful. The chefs in test kitchen have made 10-200 variations of each recipe and the best recipe they've found is in this cookbook. This cookbook doesn't have any photos, however, so it's more of a cookbook to reach for when you already know what you want to make.

We've made several birthday cakes using this cookbook all with great success. If we could eat whatever we wanted we would be making desserts every night using recipes from this cookbook.
A Good Day for SaladA Good Day for Salad by Jeannette Ferrary

Some salad recipe books bombard you with chicken. I am fine with chicken, but there are so many other things I would rather eat. This cookbook has some wonderful ideas. There are salads in here made with berries and greens, apples and nuts, smoked fish, lamb, cheeses. This is a very nice cookbook.

This cookbook really produces wonderful fresh pastas and great pasta sauces for dried pasta from the super-market. The risotto recipes are a little too large in this cookbook, however, so we usually use The Best Recipe for risotto.

The Colonial Williamsburg Tavern CookbookThe Colonial Williamsburg Tavern Cookbook by Colonial Williamsburg Foundation
Buy new: $14.28 / Used from: $6.99
We love colonial Williamsburg, and the taverns there are wonderful. We bought this gem of a cookbook so we could make pickled watermelon rind one day, and although we haven't tried that recipe yet, we've used this cookbook quite a lot to make dinners and some breakfasts- it's been wonderful, most of the recipes are suitable for entertaining and none are very difficult.

Out-of-this-world ice cream!! I didn't realize ice cream would taste sooo much better homemade- but man, does it ever. My favorites were mint ice cream (we used mint that we had grown ourselves) and Chocolate ice cream (I usually don't even like chocolate ice cream- We used Penzey's chocolate- awesome!!!)
Chocolate Obsession: Confections and Treats to Create and SavorChocolate Obsession: Confections and Treats to Create and Savor by Michael Recchiuti

Before I tried, I was frightened of the potential mess and the difficulty of the endeavor, but I did really want to try to make my own chocolates- and I did it!! The chocolates were the best I'd ever had- they did cost quite a bit to make, and we did fine with keeping the mess under control- until the last 30 minutes when our kitchen exploded in a chocolate mess.
