Clive Barker's Books of Blood 1-3Clive Barker's Books of Blood 1-3 by Clive Barker
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $6.97
Easily having the biggest impact upon my young psyche, I discovered Clive Barker's epic short story collection back in the 1980's and was quickly drawn in. His work is visceral and yet, somehow abstract, conquering subjects both obscure and obscene.
Complete Vampire Chronicles (Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the body Thief)Complete Vampire Chronicles (Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the body Thief) by Anne Rice
Buy new: $21.09 / Used from: $18.47
With the Vampire trend now swinging high thanks to authors like Charlene Harris, Stephanie Meyer and LJ Smith, one must recall the brilliant writer who BEGAN the modern outlook upon our fanged friends. While Rice's work can be considered "historical fiction" in some cases, it is both her captivating characters and brilliant prose that should be recognized.
On a Pale Horse (Incarnations of Immortality, Bk. 1)On a Pale Horse (Incarnations of Immortality, Bk. 1) by Piers Anthony
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Unfortunately, an all too often overlooked fantasy and scifi author, Piers Anthony's "Incarnations Of Immortality" series was instrumental in teaching me to think outside the normal confines of book genres. An epic and sprawling tale of gods in a near, alternate future, it's complexity and audacity will not disappoint.
Anno DraculaAnno Dracula by Kim Newman
Buy used from: $15.00
Kim Newman has created a brilliant world spawned from a "what-if" concept based on events that would have transpired after Bram Stoker original novel. Filled with characters both historical and fictional, the reader can follow the exploits of vampires in a world where they have been publicly known of since the turn of the 20th century.
American Gods: A NovelAmerican Gods: A Novel by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $3.98
I've been reading the work of Neil Gaiman since his time writing the DC/Vertigo comic "The Sandman." His knowledge of mythology and literature is impressive, more so his ability to weave that knowledge into contemporary tales. While I tend to enjoy his short story work more than his novels, "American Gods" is a masterpiece.
The Sword of Truth, Boxed Set I, Books 1-3: Wizard's First Rule, Blood of the Fold ,Stone of TearsThe Sword of Truth, Boxed Set I, Books 1-3: Wizard's First Rule, Blood of the Fold ,Stone of Tears by Terry Goodkind
Buy new: $17.14 / Used from: $13.87
While I'm not usually a fan of what would be considered "traditional" fantasy, I found Terry Goodkind's 'Sword Of Truth' series to be exceptional excellent. I must admit that I haven't read some of his more recent work, but don't be turned off by the TV show; stick to the novels.
NecroscopeNecroscope by Brian Lumley
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.49
Brian Lumley's work with his bizarre "Necroscope" series taught me if you wish to include some element to your tale, go ahead and do it. Combining alternate dimensions, counter intelligence outfits, psychic powers and symbiotic vampires, these books are filled with just about everything you could imagine.
Relic (Pendergast, Book 1)Relic (Pendergast, Book 1) by Douglas Preston
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Authors Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child brought us the novel "Relic" years ago, and it was made into a forgettable movie. Fortunately the book was far better and the tales have continued with many outstanding characters, especially that of FBI Agent Pendergast. These supernatural thrillers, many revolving around the NY Museum of History, are complex and engaging, absolute page-turners.
