A list of great "best of" compilations (Part 2: double and triple CDs)
By an Amazon.com customer
Past Masters (Remastered)Past Masters (Remastered) by The Beatles
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $11.99
This 2CD collection by the Beatles (originally released as two independent titles) constitutes the most concise introduction to the Fab 4, despite being essentially a non-LP tracks collection to fill in the gaps. Originally lacking in sound fidelity, that should be corrected this 9/9/09, when the remastered edition is finally released. Yay!
Led Zeppelin RemastersLed Zeppelin Remasters by Led Zeppelin
Buy new: $44.98 / Used from: $8.90
I picked up this 2CD set over the more recent "Mothership." That title gave me ear fatigue (the remastering was too loud, any subtlety the original music had was lost). This collection has most of the tracks needed to have a proper intro to this band. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Hot Rocks 1964-1971(DSD Remastered)Hot Rocks 1964-1971(DSD Remastered) by The Rolling Stones
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $15.42
This was a tough decision. I had a hard time choosing between this, "More Hot Rocks" and "The London Years". All 3 are above the career-spanning "Forty Licks," which has too much sub par material. "Hot Rocks 1964-1971" works because every song on it is a classic, and almost every hit you'd want from the ABKCO period is here. Some are missing, but they can be found on "More Hot Rocks".
Carry OnCarry On by Stills & Nash Crosby
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $14.32
This 2CD set is a distillation of the 4CD CSN box, but since it works great as a hits collection, it made me a fan of theirs. For many people, it includes all the CSN(Y) music they will ever need. Great sound, awesome selection.
FlashbackFlashback by Electric Light Orchestra
Buy new: $29.47 / Used from: $20.34
This 3CD collection of remastered hits combined with unearthed gems/new tracks served as a preview for Sony's remasters series. Beautiful sound, excellent presentation, great selection, nice flow. Top notch. Serves well as an introduction to the new fan, as an "all a casual fan needs" set, and also has enough "Easter eggs" for the long time aficionado.
Cirkus: The Young Person's Guide to King Crimson - LiveCirkus: The Young Person's Guide to King Crimson - Live by King Crimson
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $14.73
Crimson was always a live entity in essence. This 1999 collection compiles 30 years of live performances culled from their many live releases. Everything is seamlessly edited together, despite the numerous lineup changes. Essential intro to the King.
BiographBiograph by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $22.97 / Used from: $15.00
The mother of all box set retrospectives, this wonderful 3CD sampler of Dylan's masterpieces (incomplete of course...most Dylan albums need to be enjoyed in full) was carefully sequenced when first released, with insightful notes from the man himself. Remastered during the 90's, it is still superior, IMHO, to the newer, more comprehensive "Dylan" 3CD set.
Artist of the CenturyArtist of the Century by Elvis Presley
Buy used from: $16.75
The King of Rock and Roll and his greatest hits compiled the best possible way onto 3 remastered discs. My personal introduction to Elvis, and a highly appropriate one at that.
Best of BowieBest of Bowie by David Bowie
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $12.00
Now this is a collector's nightmare. Every territory had a different "Best Of Bowie" release, with alternative tracklists and configurations. Sadly, all 1CD versions are helplessly incomplete. I have the Chilean 2CD set, which is excellent, but you might prefer the US or UK double sets. As long as it is not a single CD, you should be OK. 2CDs of Bowie's hits is the bare minimum.
HitHit by Peter Gabriel
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $12.53
The European version of PG's double disc retrospective. Whereas "Shaking The Tree" was the perfect 1CD collection, "Hit" completes the story with key tracks from his post 1990 albums. The European version has the "guitar-up-front" remix of "I Have The Touch" by Robbie Robertson. It's my favorite version of the track, unavailable elsewhere.
Wingspan (Hits & History)Wingspan (Hits & History) by Paul McCartney
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.25
This was meant to be the ultimate introduction to Paul McCartney and Wings (hence the title), but the inclusion of some of Paul's post Wings hits up until 1984 (Wings disbanded in 1980) leaves this collection floating on the air. Still, it is a pleasant selection of great tracks. Great aural experience.
Platinum CollectionPlatinum Collection by Genesis
Buy new: $27.98 / Used from: $11.50
A 3CD restrospective, arranged chronologically (but backwards!). Almost every hit a casual fan needs is here. Discs 1 and 2 are devoted to the Phil Collins fronted version of the band, while disc 3 features Peter Gabriel on lead vocals.
Anthology: Through the YearsAnthology: Through the Years by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Buy new: $14.97 / Used from: $11.99
A double hits collection from Petty was much needed. This is not perfect, however, as it omits all of Petty's Warner hits, undoubtedly because of licensing issues. A shame, as there was more than enough room to fit them all. In any case, all that is here is good, although the 1993 single disc "Greatest Hits" is still the best intro to Petty.
Greatest Hits I, II & III - The Platinum Collection (3CD)Greatest Hits I, II & III - The Platinum Collection (3CD) by Queen
Buy new: $14.97 / Used from: $14.74
The first two discs (also available individually) are pure delight. The third disc is, however, a sad execution. Instead of filling the gaps regarding missing hits, the producers included some solo tracks, plus remixes and live versions of songs already on the other 2 volumes. In any case, most essential tracks are here, and this is cheaper than getting the first two volumes individually.
Echoes: The Best of Pink FloydEchoes: The Best of Pink Floyd by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $3.18
Here we have the ultimate album band having a 2CD career retrospective. This could have failed in oh so many levels, it's a wonder how it turned out to be so good. The most comprehensive introduction to the band, with most tracks segued onto each other. Note, however, that this cannot substitute for having the individual albums.
The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac (2CD)The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac (2CD) by Fleetwood Mac
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $9.92
I wanted to separate this entity from the blues pre-Nicks era with Peter Green et al. I have yet to find a proper intro to that original lineup. As for this title, it's pure guilty-pleasure material, and pretty good as it is. 2CDs covering the Nicks/Buckingham years up until their mid 90's reunion. Nice.
Platinum Collection Bryan FerryPlatinum Collection Bryan Ferry by Bryan Ferry
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $18.92
This is the perfect intro to Roxy Music in my opinion. All their UK singles, combined with Bryan Ferry's hits, make this retrospective shine through. However, you'll feel the need to get Roxy's individual albums afterwards. They are THAT good.
DecadeDecade by Neil Young
Buy used from: $18.00
All of Neil's hits up until 1976, either solo, or with Buffalo Springfield, CSNY or Crazy Horse. Fantastic selection. Triple LP released on 2 CDs.
The Big O: The Original Singles CollectionThe Big O: The Original Singles Collection by Roy Orbison
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $7.16
A neat concept, this 2CD set compiles all of Orbison's singles for Monument Records in the 60's and 70's. Disc 1 collects the A sides, while disc 2 brings you the B sides, contributing to the flow of the collection immensely. Superb listening!
YessongsYessongs by Yes
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $13.97
OK. I admit it. This is cheating. "Yessongs" is not a greatest hits compilation, but a 3LP/2CD live set from the band's tours behind their landmark LPs "Fragile" and "Close To The Edge". However, the track selection is so nice and the execution so masterful, it perfectly encompasses everything Yes is about. Hence, it works as a de-facto 2CD "best of".
Buddy Holly GoldBuddy Holly Gold by Buddy Holly
Buy new: $14.97 / Used from: $10.59
Not perfect, but the most comprehensive Buddy Holly retrospective so far. It includes most of the hits, in pristine sound quality. Double CD.
The BluesThe Blues by Eric Clapton
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.55
This retrospective courtesy of Polydor collects on two discs what Clapton always did best: play the blues. The first disc includes studio tracks, while the second selects key live performances. An essential set to introduce yourself to Clapton's 70's blues.
The Singles+The Singles+ by The Moody Blues
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $8.71
One of their few career-spanning 2CD collections, including not only the Hayward classics, but also the Denny Laine period hits, and some side projects. It is almost overkill, but still a nice listen.
Reelin' & Rockin': The Very Best of Chuck BerryReelin' & Rockin': The Very Best of Chuck Berry by Chuck Berry
Buy new: $23.98
This double CD retrospective makes the classic 2LP collection "The Great Twenty-Eight" obsolete, both in terms of sound quality and completeness. Domestically, a similar collection called "The Anthology" (reissued later as "Gold" with the exact same contents) has less tracks, but all hits are available in both cases, so feel free to pick either.
Working Class Hero: The Definitive LennonWorking Class Hero: The Definitive Lennon by John Lennon
Buy new: $26.98 / Used from: $12.86
The only 2CD retrospective from Lennon, I don't enjoy this one as much as his other 1CD hits sets. Surely, it has been beautifully remastered, but the sequencing is a little awkward. It doesn't flow very well, IMHO. In any case, all the hits are here, shining throughout.
Greatest Hits - The HolliesGreatest Hits - The Hollies by The Hollies
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $9.90
The main redeeming quality of this set is its completeness and sound quality. However, the sequencing seems random at best (does not flow well), and it is also padded with filler. Since a perfect 1CD hits collection from them does not exist, I compiled it myself from this collection.
Ultimate CollectionUltimate Collection by Who
Buy used from: $20.98
Truly honoring its name, The Who's "Ultimate Collection" brings together most highlights from their extraordinary catalog. They have been anthologized more times than needed, surely, but this one surpasses all other single or double CD retrospectives. Great listen.
Retrospectacle: The Supertramp AnthologyRetrospectacle: The Supertramp Anthology by Supertramp
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $9.99
A nice introduction to the band on 2 discs, with superb sound quality and a couple of rarities unavailable elsewhere.
Exotic Mixture: Best of Singles A's & B'sExotic Mixture: Best of Singles A's & B's by Roy Wood
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $13.92
Probably the best 2CD compilation there is from Wood. Collects not only his hits, but also his more experimental b-sides. No Move, ELO or Wizzard tracks are here, only songs by Woody solo.
Greatest Hits/One Night Only: Deluxe Sound & VisionGreatest Hits/One Night Only: Deluxe Sound & Vision by Elton John
Buy new: $57.49 / Used from: $10.18
While this collection is usually available on 2 CDs, my edition has a bonus live DVD called "One Night Only". A career spanning collection, it sadly omits some Elton hits that were covers (like "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" or "Pinball Wizard"), favoring Elton's originals. Still, it's a good set.
The Best Of Chicago 40th AnniversaryThe Best Of Chicago 40th Anniversary by Chicago
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $4.65
There are too many Chicago compilations flooding the market. Since I wanted one, I bought this 40th Anniversary double "Best Of". Probably most people prefer "The Chicago Story" or "Only The Beginning" over this one, but for a casual fan like me, this one is top notch. All the hit singles are here, most in their original 45 versions.
Essential Sun CollectionEssential Sun Collection by Carl Perkins
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $9.99
Excellent quality 2CD collection. All of Carl Perkins' greatest hits are included here, featuring stunning remastered sound. This is all the Carl Perkins you will need. The flow of the collection is simply terrific.
Everything and NothingEverything and Nothing by David Sylvian
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $6.16
This David Sylvian retrospective supervised by himself covers mainly his solo years on 2 discs. Some of his collaborations are included as well, so this is as comprehensive as it gets, although it is not precisely a hits collection.
Best of BadfingerBest of Badfinger
Buy used from: $3.95
(Buyer beware! Another similarly titled collection with less tracks is also available. It is not from Badfinger, but from a tribute band featuring only one ex-member. The good one is on Apple Records.) Sorry for cheating once again! This is a 1CD set, not 2CDs. Read below to understand why it is listed here...
Best Of..., Vol. 02Best Of..., Vol. 02 by Badfinger
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.94
OK, this and the previous one are two different 1CD collections, never available jointly. However, in order to have the real "cream" of Badfinger, you need them both together, instead of the more recent "Very Best" which combines tracks from the two collections. While the first volume covers the Apple years, Vol. 2 covers the best from the Warner years.
