RushRush by Rush
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.87
Their debut, with the late John Rutsey on drums sees the boys doing a bit of hard, English blues along the lines of Cream or Led Zepplin. This is Rush for drinkin' brews and shootin' pool.
Fly by NightFly by Night by Rush
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.79
Welcoming Neil Peart on the drums, the trio finds the line-up that would live on for over 30 years. Less bluesy and a little more metal with tunes like Anthem. We also see the first of the concept pieces thanks to Neil's work on lyrics. I can't help but think touring with Uriah Heep may have had a bit of an influence on this album.
Caress of SteelCaress of Steel by Rush
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.46
Makes my top 5 list of Rush albums. A fairly raw one. Geddy really seems to be pushing hard on the vocals. A bit of philosophical humor on I Think I'm Going bald and a Rush classic with Lakeside Park. The Necromancer and Fountain of Lamneth are great concept pieces. I really love some of Alex's solos on this one. First album cover by Hugh Syme who has continued to do them since.
21122112 by Rush
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.71
Rush arrives with this landmark album and it's Ayn Rand inspired title piece. Tears and The Twilight Zone seem almost a little out of place in the Rush catalog. Something for Nothing is a classic, and A Passage to Bangkok shows the band isn't quite as squeeky clean as some seem to think.
All the World's a StageAll the World's a Stage by Rush
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.69
Rush live and raw. This album set the patern of four studio albums and then a live album they would follow for most of their career. I love the bass-heavy version of What You're Doing. I think their live albums are a great place for new Rush fans to start.
A Farewell to KingsA Farewell to Kings by Rush
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.79
Atmosphereic and cinematic this album marks the start of Rush's golden age. Cygnus x-1 has one of my favorite bass riffs of all time. Listen carefully and I think you can hear the black hole's radio telescope signal behind the guitar at the end.
HemispheresHemispheres by Rush
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.76
Considered by many Rush fans to be their crowning achievement. The title track is one of their best concept pieces. The instrumental La Villa Strangiato features Alex at his finest.
Permanent WavesPermanent Waves by Rush
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.88
Rush starts to get a little more focused in their songwriting and produce shorter songs, but Jacob's Ladder and Natural Science stand out as two of their finest longer works.
Moving PicturesMoving Pictures by Rush
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.09
This is the album they will always be remembered for-their calling card. If you've heard a Rush song on the radio it was probably from this one. Every track is a classic and the album is about as solid and sound as it gets. The Camera Eye marks the end of Rush going long form with their songwriting.
Exit...Stage LeftExit...Stage Left by Rush
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.64
The live album that introduced me to the band, contains a great mix of long and short pieces, captures them at the end of what was their best four album run. This is a great place to start if your new to the band, my favorite Rush album, and #1 on my desert island list.
SignalsSignals by Rush
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.74
The band starts to work more heavily with keyboards, guitar effects and electronic percussion. My favorite studio album. The Analog Kid may be my favorite Rush song and Countdown is great on headphones.
Grace Under PressureGrace Under Pressure by Rush
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.12
Beautiful album cover for a fairly dark album. The band continues to experiment with electronics.
Power WindowsPower Windows by Rush
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.94
Typical of the Rush albums of this run, lots of electronics. Alex's guitar work continues to get very textural with a great deal of effects. Many bands lost me when they went keyboard-heavy in the 80's but Rush's songwriting and musicianship were still strong.
Hold Your FireHold Your Fire by Rush
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.34
Their most keyboard-centric album, but I think some of Neil's best lyrics can be found on this one.
A Show of HandsA Show of Hands by Rush
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.13
The live album that more or less wraps up the 1980's run for the band. Many of the songs show a little more muscle then their studio versions.
PrestoPresto by Rush
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.57
A strong candidate for cutest album cover of all time. I kind of think of this and the next album as Rush's adult contemporary stage, very mature song writing, with lots of musicianship but the guitars are still a little ways down in the mix.
Roll the BonesRoll the Bones by Rush
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.95
Perhaps one of the most misinterpreted album titles ever. (It refers to rolling dice, not that other stuff. See A Passage to Bankok for that one) Rush even experiments with rap on the title track to this one, and as usual they pull it off in their own signature style.
CounterpartsCounterparts by Rush
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.15
With a count-off and a salvo of snare hits Neil announces that Rush have found their old rock attitude. The guitars are once again right up front and there are only minimal keyboards. This makes my top five list.
Test for EchoTest for Echo by Rush
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.37
What was nearly Rush's final studio album, due to personal tragedies in Neil Peart's life, (See his book Ghost Rider for details) Strong, solid songwriting, great riffs. Typical of albums that end each of the classic four studio album runs it sort of sums up the previous three.
Different Stages: LiveDifferent Stages: Live by Rush
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $6.65
Great live album, with the band in fine form. Contains the full length live version of 2112 (the one on All The Worlds a Stage is abreviated), as well as Natural Science, and the extended version of Bravado. The third disk of this is a concert from 1978 which is a little rough around the edges, but still a great listen.
Vapor TrailsVapor Trails by Rush
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.95
The return of Rush with a raw, rhythmic, and sometimes dissonent album that features their most personal lyrics. With each new album it always takes me a few listens to get on the same page as the boys, but this one took a little longer then usual.
FeedbackFeedback by Rush
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.58
EP which features Rush covering some of the songs they cut their teeth on back in the 60's. This one's just fun, summertime, cruisin' music. My only complaint is I wish it was longer, but then it wouldn't be an EP now would it?
Rush in RioRush in Rio by Rush
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $6.80
In recent years Rush have leaned heavily on live offerings. This one is a nice triple album capturing then infront of a huge crowd in Rio, fairly good mix of material from through out their career.
Snakes & ArrowsSnakes & Arrows by Rush
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $3.97
Rush's latest studio offering finds a nice blend of muscle and songwriting with the distinct feeling of the band getting back in touch with their roots. So far it's held up as one of my top five.
Snakes & Arrows Live 2 CD SetSnakes & Arrows Live 2 CD Set by Rush
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $7.91
I admit I haven't picked this one up yet. It's nice to see a couple of old gems dug out of the vaults.
VictorVictor by Alex Lifeson
Buy used from: $0.97
Solo offering from Alex, it's a fairly dark and disturbing album featuring guests such as Les Claypool, Edwin (formerly of I Mother Earth), and vocalist Dalbello who absolutely rocks on the track Start Today.
My Favorite HeadacheMy Favorite Headache by Geddy Lee
Buy used from: $1.91
Solo offering from Geddy. Kind of feels a little like Rush-lite, but contains some excellent songwriting.
Burning for Buddy: A Tribute to the Music of Buddy RichBurning for Buddy: A Tribute to the Music of Buddy Rich by Various Artists
Buy new: $8.96 / Used from: $1.92
Tribute to Buddy Rich that Neil Peart produced and played on one track. Features a great assortment of rock and jazz drummers doing the big band thing.
Burning for Buddy: A Tribute to the Music of Buddy Rich, Vol. 2Burning for Buddy: A Tribute to the Music of Buddy Rich, Vol. 2 by Various Artists

Ditto.
