By an Amazon.com customer
Our Dancing Daughters [VHS]Our Dancing Daughters [VHS]
Buy used from: $49.95
1928- Joan the flapper! Without a doubt this is Crawford's greatest film from the silent era and one can clearly see that she's loving every minute of it. Watch her dance as well as get mixed up in a scandal involving some of her closest girlfriends. Hard to find and out of print, but definitely worth a look. "B"

1931- Though it's their 3rd pairing, Gable and Crawford sizzle with chemistry in this great melodrama. Typical of her roles at MGM, Joan is cast as a shopgirl who soon climbs the ladder to fame and riches with the help of Gable. One of my favorite early Crawford films! "A-"

1932- With an all-star cast that included Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery, & Lionel Barrymore it's no wonder why this film won the oscar for Best Picture of 1932. Crawford's a secretary who is in love with John Barrymore, who is in love with Greta Garbo. Joan easily steals the film from Garbo. "B+"

1932- Crawford the hooker! Joan was always quoted as saying she hated this film and her performance in it. Here she plays Sadie Thompson, an easy going girl who is relentlessly tormented to reform by a biblical Walter Huston. The film is just alright. It's not Crawford's worst, but it's not her best either. "B-"
Dancing LadyDancing Lady

1933- Crawford & Gable team up for their 4th and greatest time together. Joan plays a dancer with Gable as her hard-edged director. Look for Fred Astaire in his film debut portraying himself. "A"
Sadie Mckee [VHS]Sadie Mckee [VHS]
Buy used from: $8.38
1934- Easily Crawford's best shop girl movie. As always, Crawford rises from rags to riches while gaining the love of three men along the way. Co-stars Crawford's soon-to-be 2nd husband, Franchot Tone. "B"
Forsaking All Others (1934) [VHS]Forsaking All Others (1934) [VHS]
Buy used from: $7.90
1934- A light screwball comedy with a great cast including Clark Gable, Robert Montgomery, Rosalind Russell, and Billie Burke. Crawford is set to marry Montgomery while all along her childhood friend Gable is in love with her. 2nd best pairing of Crawford & Gable. "B+"
Love on the Run (1936) [VHS]Love on the Run (1936) [VHS]
Buy used from: $9.81
1936- A rehash of Gable's oscar winning role in "It Happened One Night", this light comedy is delightful none the less. Co-stars Crawford's then husband, Franchot Tone. "C+"
Mannequin (1938) [VHS]Mannequin (1938) [VHS]
Buy used from: $9.45
1938- Crawford's only teaming with the great Spencer Tracy, which would ultimately become her last "shop girl" type role. Worth a look. "C+"
The Women (Keepcase)The Women (Keepcase)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.50
1939- An amazing film with an all-star, all female cast directed by the wonderful George Cukor. Crawford plays the bitch we all love her to be. The film also stars my favorite, Norma Shearer, with Rosalind Russell, Joan Fontaine and Paulette Goddard, just to name a few. "A+"
Strange Cargo (1940) [VHS]Strange Cargo (1940) [VHS]
Buy used from: $5.75
1940- The 8th and final teaming of on/off-screen lovers Crawford & Gable. The film, which is just as the title reads, "strange", is considered by many to be their best work together. The film is best summarized as Crawford & Gable in the Jungle. "B+"
Susan & God [VHS]Susan & God [VHS]
Buy used from: $14.89
1940- Some say that Crawford portrays Susan much too like Gertrude Lawrence, who originated the role on Broadway. No matter, it's nice to see Joan in a non-dramatic part playing a wife and mother who alienates, and annoys, her family and friends with her new found religion. Also stars the great Fredric March. "B-"
Woman's Face [VHS]Woman's Face [VHS]
Buy used from: $7.75
1941- Joan's the hard-edged, disfigured-faced woman who we see on trial for murder at the start of the film. Crawford gives a realistic and moving performance that she felt deserved an Oscar nomination, which she never got. George Cukor directs Crawford for the third and final time. "A-"
Above Suspicion (1943) [VHS]Above Suspicion (1943) [VHS]
Buy used from: $21.00
1943- Who was the moron that cast Joan Crawford with Fred MacMurray? Absolutely no chemistry whatsoever. The two stars play a newlywed couple who are undercover for the secret services. I wouldn't go as far to say this is Crawford's worst film. That honor belongs solely to "Trog", but it's awful just the same. "D-"
Mildred Pierce (Keepcase)Mildred Pierce (Keepcase)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.50
1945- Arguably Joan's finest film, she took home the Academy Award for Best Actress. Here she plays a mother who will go to any means to make her spoiled daughter happy. After leaving MGM, this marked not only Joan's first film for Warner Bros, but the film that revitalized her desperately sagging career. "A+"
HumoresqueHumoresque
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.00
1946- Though many consider this another Crawford classic, it seems like more of a vehicle for its leading man, John Garfield. Garfield gives a great performance as a struggling violinest who finds love with the married and alcoholic Crawford. Personally my least favorite Crawford film. "C+"
PossessedPossessed
Buy used from: $3.13
1947- You'll go "mad" for Crawford in this psycho-drama about a woman who goes crazy loving a man who doesn't love her. Crawford racked up her 2nd best actress oscar nod and proved to everyone she wouldn't be going anywhere soon. "A+"
Flamingo Road (1949) [VHS]Flamingo Road (1949) [VHS]
Buy used from: $2.95
1949- Crawford the Carny. Yes Crawford starts the film as a carnival dancer, yes this is a slight rehash of "Mildred Pierce" and yes Crawford bitch slaps Sydney Greenstreet. All things aside, though this may not be Crawford's finest, it's actually very entertaining and I give it a high recommendation. "B"
The Damned Don't CryThe Damned Don't Cry
Buy used from: $5.31
1950- Enter "Tough-as-nails" Crawford. It was in this film that Crawford's image began to harden and she took on a no-nonsense, street smart persona. In the film, Joan plays a woman who rises to the top as a gangster's girl only to find that she loves another man. "C+"
Harriet Craig [VHS]Harriet Craig [VHS]
Buy used from: $21.00
1950- Harriet Craig is a woman who cares more about an orderly home than anything else, including her husband. In a remake of the great 1936 classic "Craig's Wife" with Rosalind Russell, Joan steps into the shoes of Harriet. Some say Crawford didn't act in this film, take it she was a cleaning fanatic in real life. "B+
Sudden FearSudden Fear
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $15.99
1952- In Jack Palance's breakout role, Crawford earned her 3rd and final Best Actress nod as a playwrite who marries a man that is trying to kill her for her money. Crawford isn't much to look at in the film, but she does give great close-up shots, showing her sincere fright. Another favorite! "B+"
Torch Song (1953) [VHS]Torch Song (1953) [VHS]
Buy used from: $3.35
1953- As Jenny Stewart, Crawford plays the over-the-top stage actress of all time. This film marked Joan's return to MGM after leaving 10 years prior. No this isn't a great film, and it really marks the start of Joan's flamboyant career as Queen of Camp. "C-"
Queen BeeQueen Bee
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.73
1955- Another loss for Miss Crawford. Joan plays a southern woman who basically gets what she wants at any cost. Watch as Crawford effortlessly chews up every scene with such bitchiness that we hardly notice she's speaking without a southern accent. An often depressing film. "D+"
Autumn Leaves [VHS]Autumn Leaves [VHS]
Buy used from: $8.00
1956- Joan as the older woman. In a great spinster role, Crawford plays a woman who loves and marries a much younger man (Cliff Robertson), with a mental illness. Highly underrated film that is definitely one of Crawford's best. "B+"
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (Two-Disc Special Edition)What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.66 / Used from: $15.95
1962- The only screen pairing of Crawford with fellow screen legend, Bette Davis. Though Davis easily walked off with the picture, and the best actress nod, Joan gives a stellar performance as the invalid and tortured sister Blanche. It's safe to call this Crawford's last great film. "A"
Strait-JacketStrait-Jacket
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.24
1964- Welcome back Camp! If anyone had doubt that Crawford's career had taken a turn for the worse, might I recommend this film. Joan plays an ax murdering woman who is released from a mental institution to live at her brother's farm where the past seems to repeat itself. This one definitely has a cult following that I just can't seem to get into. "D+"
Berserk! [VHS]Berserk! [VHS]
Buy used from: $9.25
1968- Joan was 62 and acting like she was 22! Here she plays the ringmaster of a circus where several mysterious murders are taking place. This is definitely "The Greatest Show On Earth" gone terribly wrong. Again, not Joan's best. Did I mention her love interest in the film is 25 years her junior? "D-"
TrogTrog
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.99
1970- What is there to say about a film where a man runs around with a gorilla mask on and we the audience are to believe he is a pre-historic species? Sadly it is this film that ended Joan Crawford's long and once spectacular career. I strongly recommend this movie to be rented or viewed on tv. Don't waste money buying it. "F"
Mommie Dearest (Hollywood Royalty/Special Collector's Edition)Mommie Dearest (Hollywood Royalty/Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.60
1981- Though this isn't a true Crawford film, it is "based" (and I emphasize "based") on her life as a movie star and mother. There's not much more to say about this film that hasn't already been said. Was Joan Crawford a campy, over-the-top, psychotic menace as portrayed by Faye Dunaway? No. Was Joan Crawford a child abuser? Yes
