This superb film (by the director of "Orlando" and "The Man who Cried") is told entirely in iambic pentameter. It's spoken so naturally though that it takes a while before you realize that people are rhyming. This is a passionate and intelligent love story as well as a philosophical look at cultural identity, language and religion. Outstanding.
The Prime of Miss Jean BrodieThe Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Set in a prestigious girls school in the Edinburgh of the 1930s, Maggie Smith won an Oscar for her brilliant portrayal of the narcissistic and idealistic school teacher, Miss Brodie, and her influence on her special group of "Brodie Girls". This movie never fails to pack a punch each time I see it. Haunting.

A wild ride and unconventional look at the glam rock era of the 1970s that somehow manages to incorporate Oscar Wilde as a figurehead. An intriguing plot, great music, men in make-up, nudity, both male and female. If you need more convincing check out the fantastic cast: Christian Bale, Ewan McGregor, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Eddie Izzard, and Toni Collette.
The Wild Parrots of Telegraph HillThe Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

If you haven't yet seen this delightful documentary you are missing out. It follows the story of Mark Bittner and the relationship he forms with a flock of conures on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. Beautiful footage of the individual parrots and their personalities. Best of all, the DVD includes an update on the birds you'll come to love!

Hilarious from start to finish! This is comedy gold extracted from the drudgery of modern office life. I rarely find comedies that I love but this has me laughing out loud. In particular, the slow motion scene, set to gangsta rap, showing the destruction of the hated copier/printer machine has me on the floor.

Set in 1945 in an isolated house in fog-infused Jersey (off the coast of England), Nicole Kidman plays the nervy, highly-anxious mother of 2 children who have a deadly allergy to sunlight. The film is suffused with a sense of dread, glides slowly and is heavy on the atmosphere - but there is definitely a plot, one that will shock you, oh yes.

This Bertolucci film was inspired by Adair's novel which in turn was based on Cocteau's "Les Enfants Terrible" - my favorite book as a teenager. Described as a love letter to cinema, the whole film has a dream-like quality to it. Beautiful.

This 1955 French classic is both an art movie and a psychological thriller. With its rich dialogue, eerie cinematography, and terrifying twists, you won't forget this in a hurry. (Note: there is a 1996 Hollywood remake with Sharon Stone which I haven't seen. Why bother when the original is flawless?)
