![]() | Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live by Muddy Waters
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $13.20 Very fine live collection.
![]() | Masters of the Delta Blues: The Friends of Charlie Patton by Various Artists
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $10.00 This is a very nice sampler of the Mississippi music scene in the golden era of the 78.
![]() | On Tap by Junior Wells
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.72 Jr's band was red hot on this one. A fine collection of an artist at his peak. Hoodoo Man Blues is best, but this is next best in my opinion
![]() | Hoodoo Man Blues by Junior Wells' Chicago Blues Band
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.93 An excellent starting place. If you want to experience the richness of Chicago blues, and Muddy hasn't answered all your questions, then this man will tell you.
![]() | Searching for Odell Harris by Odell Harris
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $10.99 The real deal. A Louisiana roofer by day, a blues man by night. They called the record searching for Odell Harris, because he dissappeared right after the recording and they never got to pay him. He just vanished, and is reputed to have changed his name. Anything on the Broke and Hungry Blues label is interesting, and most of it is flat-out great

![]() | You Gotta Move by Mississippi Fred McDowell
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $13.75 I just love this one by Fred. They're all wonderful (except perhaps the I Don't Play No Rock and Roll...title should have been 'these turkeys can't keep up with a real live bluesman'. Fred plays mostly solo, it's very representative of classic Mississippi Hill Country blues.
![]() | The Anthology: 1947-1972 by Muddy Waters
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $19.94 Nice package
![]() | The Best of Muddy Waters: The Father of Chicago Blues by Muddy Waters
Buy used from: $5.93 Some older rarities, well worth it for the true fan, though there are some out of tune moments.
![]() | Paris 1972 by Muddy Waters
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.20 Muddy was hot on this Paris date. His singing is commanding on this one.
![]() | Blues in the Mississippi Night by Various Artists
Buy used from: $17.49 Loaded with informal dialog and atmosphere. Like being in a hot, smokey apartment with blues giants on a Memphis evening
![]() | Burning Hell by John Lee Hooker
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.95 Scary guy. This one is particularly haunting
![]() | Club Caravan by Big George Brock & the Houserockers
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $38.04 Very retro sounding blues from a real deal guy, recorded in Mississipi by Jimbo Mathus. Roger at Cat Head should be blessed for providing the world with this recording.
![]() | Champagne & Reefer by Mojo Buford
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $10.99 Easily overlooked, but very nice Muddy Water tribute band style effort by the great Harmonica sideman. It's clear he still hears Muddy singing these songs in the back of him mind and does them justice.
![]() | Rockin' the Juke Joint Down by The Jelly Roll Kings
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $9.95 The gold standard for Juke Joint music. The late Frank Frost is wonderful, Sam Carr shuffles on the drums like butterfly, but with a right foot made of concrete, Big Jack Johnson can play like everyone but plays like no one else.
![]() | Heritage of the Blues: Shake It Baby by Jessie Mae Hemphill
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.10 Her Mississipi accent adds an extra dimension of blue notes. Not to be missed.
![]() | Heritage of the Blues: Skull & Crossbones Blues by Johnny Shines
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $7.33 I don't care for the modern sounding opening cut, but the rest of this is pure gold. When he sings Robert Johnson he's not remembering the record, he's remembering the time he spent with the actual man. His version of Standing at the Crossroads is perhaps how RJ might have played it today, had he lived. Perfect.
![]() | Do the Rump! by Junior Kimbrough & the Soul Blues Boys
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.99 ANYTHING by Junior is ethereal. I happen to like this one the best, though it's slighly less primitive than some of his other Fat Possum stuff. This man had it and he had it very big.
