![]() | Brahms/Schumann: Violin Concertos
Buy used from: $15.00 Exquisite, lyrical performances of the Brahms concerto and the - often neglected - Schumann concerto from a young Joshua Bell with Christoph von Dohnanyi conducting the Cleveland Orchestra. It's an unusual coupling emphasizing the artistic - and emotional - ties between both composers.
|

Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.77 Fine recent recording with Joshua Bell exploring the musical ties between Beethoven's and Mendelssohn's concertos, with exemplary playing from Bell and the Camerata Salzburg conducted by Sir Roger Norrington. Buy new: $47.98 / Used from: $37.98 One of the great violin soloists of the early 19th Century, Niccolo Paganini also composed some of the most spectacular works for solo violin and orchestra. Acclaimed Italian violinist Salvatore Accardo recorded one of the finest cycles of Paginini's concerti, which are still the definitive recordings of these works.

Buy used from: $3.24 Fans may overlook Gidon Kremer's impassioned, lyrical playing of Schumann's violin concerto, since it is probably the most neglected of his major orchestral works, but it is worth listening along with Argerich's compelling performance of the piano concerto and period instrument-informed performances from Harnoncourt and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

|
![]() | Beethoven, Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos
Buy used from: $10.15 Impressive playing from Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova in both works - who opts for less of a bright, sweet tone from her violin than does Bell in his recent recording - and from John Eliot Gardiner's period-instrument band. This may be a rather odd choice to purists, but it works quite well.
|
![]() | Beethoven: Violin Concerto, Romances
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $3.97 Long-time fans of Mutter may prefer her first recording of this concerto with Karajan conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker. One of my primary recommendations for this concerto along with Bell's, Hahn's and Mullova's.
|
![]() | Peter Tchaikovsky/Alexander Glazunov: Violin Concertos
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $4.86 One of my two primary recommendations for the Tchaikovsky violin concerto (The other is Joshua Bell's.). Vengerov excels in putting some fiery Slavic intensity into Tchaikovsky's score, balancing well both the technical brilliance and lyrical quality of his playing. Abbado and the Berliners are superb accompanists, giving their own splendid performance of this work.
|
![]() | Janine Jansen: Concertos & Romance
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $7.07 This sensational young Dutch violinist reminds me most of Hilary Hahn and Joshua Bell, with regards to her expressive, technically brilliant playing. Her playing of the Mendelssohn and Bruch violin concertos is among the finest I've heard in recordings, but the real treasure on this CD is the obscure Bruch piece for viola and orchestra.
