Hitchcock is in a class by himself in number of quality films. The only knock against him is that almost all of his films are of the suspense variety, not the highest art form in the world. But they are classy suspense films with other interesting aspects and that cheeky humor too.
Strangers on a TrainStrangers on a Train
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.58
Part of the fun of Hitchcock films is to watch for the little cameo of himself that he slips into every film, often in the sneakiest or most bizarre places.
The Lady VanishesThe Lady Vanishes

Stars Michael Redgrave, father of Vanessa and Lynn. Great fun.

Hello. Welcome to the Bates Motel! The list of quality Hitchock movies is endless: North by Northwest, Suspicion, Spellbound, Notorious, Foreign Correspondent, Vertigo, Rear Window, Rebecca, etc etc. Just check his filmography.

FRANK CAPRA. This Christmas classic is one of my 3 favorite movies of all time, though often chopped for TV. A statement about faith, destiny, purpose and small town life.
It Happened One NightIt Happened One Night
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $7.94
CAPRA again. Not many directors get to direct TWO great films. This one swept the 3 major Oscars for 1934. Capra's YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU won Best Picture in 1938. Not my cup to tea though.Neither were two other popular films, MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, MR DEEDS GOES TO TOWN(both too naive for my taste).
Bonnie and ClydeBonnie and Clyde
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.25
ARTHUR PENN(father of Sean). The top two are GREAT films. Most of his others, even if they don't work completely, are usually interesting.(One of many highlights in this film is the superb screen debut of Gene Wilder).
The Miracle WorkerThe Miracle Worker
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $7.49
PENN.One of only three movies that can get me misty every time. Annie teaches blind/deaf/mute Helen Keller to communicate. Patty Duke was youngest to win Oscar at the time.
Alice's RestaurantAlice's Restaurant
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.85
PENN.The extended sequence of the littering and the military draft qualifies for my Listmania: MEMORABLE MOVIE SCENES.
THE LEFT HANDED GUNTHE LEFT HANDED GUN

PENN. A film treatment of the Billy the Kid legend.
Night MovesNight Moves

PENN. A pretty good detective vehicle for Gene Hackman
The Missouri BreaksThe Missouri Breaks
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $3.36
PENN.An unusual western and an historic pairing of two icons, Brando and Jack Nicholson. Very pretty music theme too, by Canadian Hagood Hardy.
The ChaseThe Chase
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.00
PENN. Brando makes this film interesting in his role as a sheriff in a contemporary small town. Fine support from a HOT Janice Rule, a YOUNG Robert Redford, and EARLY Robert Duvall.

WOODY ALLEN. I thought Woody directed the best film of the year three years in a row. Here they are, though out of order. The finale of this film, beginning with Woody on the couch with the tape recorder, is very endearing. Great Gershwin music score.
Annie HallAnnie Hall
Buy used from: $10.42
WOODY. Won Best Picture Oscar.
InteriorsInteriors
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.33
A rare WOODY venture into drama with no humor at all. Interesting film.
Mighty AphroditeMighty Aphrodite
Buy used from: $13.95
WOODY. After a long(for me)dry period, this film finally had hints of the quality writing that his trio of late 70's films had. And the quasi-tragic chorus is a hoot. Prior to Annie Hall, all Woody's movies were pure comedy and very fresh and funny. Didn't care much for his neurotic comedy/dramas of the past 25 years though.

HOWARD HAWKS. I actually prefer the relationship of Bogart and Lauren Bacall in this film to the Bogart/Ingrid Bergman one in Casablanca. Bogie and Bacall met during this film and married soon after. He was 43 and she 19. Great scenes together.
Rio BravoRio Bravo
Buy used from: $1.51
HAWKS. My fave all-time western, barely nosing out SHANE. Finally found the jailhouse Dean Martin/Rick Nelson duet on CD after a 30 year search. Forty bucks for one song!!!(before downloading era). Obsessive, obsessive.......
Red RiverRed River
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.80
HAWKS' other great western. Star vehicle for John Wayne and especially Montgomery Clift. Also: THE BIG SLEEP and DAWN PATROL.

SAM PECKINPAH. Controversial explosive 1969 western.
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Two-Disc Special Edition)Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Two-Disc Special Edition)

PECKINPAH'S retelling of the legend, starring Kristofferson and James Coburn. Great atmospheric soundtrack written and performed by Bob Dylan. STRAW DOGS was an interesting Dustin Hoffman movie too.

JOHN HUSTON. A step into the 'heart of darkness' embodied in Fred C Dobbs, one of Bogart's greatest performances. An ironic tale of greed.

MICHAEL CURTIZ. Legendary film. Amazing dialogue and romantic tale of self-sacrifice. Especiallly amazing because it was largely made up as they went along! Lines from it have become part of our culture.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Adventures of Robin Hood (Two-Disc Special Edition)

McCabe & Mrs. MillerMcCabe & Mrs. Miller
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.99
ROBERT ALTMAN. Elegaic western with a good sountrack by Canadian poet Leonard Cohen. One of Altman's stylistic features was very natural, cluttered, overlapping dialogue.
The Long GoodbyeThe Long Goodbye
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.96
ALTMAN. Good detective film during Elliott Gould's amazing run in the 70's. Gould plays literary detective Philip Marlowe, portrayed by Bogart earlier and Mitchum later.
California SplitCalifornia Split
Buy used from: $25.99
ALTMAN. Good film about gambling. Gould again shines along with George Segal. The race track scenes are very lifelike. The very funny 'one-armed piccolo player'bit is maddeningly chopped from most prints now. Other good Altman:COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME, M*A*S*H, NASHVILLE. Still others more popular with other people than with me.

The Great EscapeThe Great Escape

JOHN STURGES. Good military film with McQueen, James Garner and others. The marching theme from this film is one of my favorites.
The Magnificent Seven (Special Edition)The Magnificent Seven (Special Edition)

STURGES. Famous western with a stellar cast. Music theme was a big hit too. Remember the CHEERS episode about this film?
Bad Day at Black RockBad Day at Black Rock

STURGES. Spencer Tracy stars in a very suspenseful film about an unwelcome one-armed stranger in a small town. Sturges' HOUR OF THE GUN, the Wyatt Earp/Doc Holliday tale, was pretty good too.
