Hitchcock is in a class by himself in number of quality films. The only knock against him is that almost all of his films are of the suspense variety, not the highest art form in the world. But they are classy suspense films with other interesting aspects and that cheeky humor too.

Stars Michael Redgrave, father of Vanessa and Lynn. Great fun.

FRANK CAPRA. This Christmas classic is one of my 3 favorite movies of all time, though often chopped for TV. A statement about faith, destiny, purpose and small town life.

ARTHUR PENN(father of Sean). The top two are GREAT films. Most of his others, even if they don't work completely, are usually interesting.(One of many highlights in this film is the superb screen debut of Gene Wilder).

PENN.The extended sequence of the littering and the military draft qualifies for my Listmania: MEMORABLE MOVIE SCENES.

PENN. A pretty good detective vehicle for Gene Hackman

PENN. Brando makes this film interesting in his role as a sheriff in a contemporary small town. Fine support from a HOT Janice Rule, a YOUNG Robert Redford, and EARLY Robert Duvall.

WOODY. Won Best Picture Oscar.

WOODY. After a long(for me)dry period, this film finally had hints of the quality writing that his trio of late 70's films had. And the quasi-tragic chorus is a hoot. Prior to Annie Hall, all Woody's movies were pure comedy and very fresh and funny. Didn't care much for his neurotic comedy/dramas of the past 25 years though.

HAWKS. My fave all-time western, barely nosing out SHANE. Finally found the jailhouse Dean Martin/Rick Nelson duet on CD after a 30 year search. Forty bucks for one song!!!(before downloading era). Obsessive, obsessive.......

SAM PECKINPAH. Controversial explosive 1969 western.

JOHN HUSTON. A step into the 'heart of darkness' embodied in Fred C Dobbs, one of Bogart's greatest performances. An ironic tale of greed.

HUSTON. Interesting situation with wartime soldier Bob Mitchum stranded on deserted island with nun Deborah Kerr. Other good Huston films: Across the Pacific, Victory(See my best sports films Listmania)

CURTIZ. One of my favorite 3 stars, Errol Flynn, shines as Robin. Nominated for Best Picture in 1939. Crowded field of outstanding films that year. Other good Curtiz films: Charge of the Light Brigade,Captain Blood, Sea Hawk, Dodge City.

ROBERT ALTMAN. Elegaic western with a good sountrack by Canadian poet Leonard Cohen. One of Altman's stylistic features was very natural, cluttered, overlapping dialogue.

ALTMAN. Good film about gambling. Gould again shines along with George Segal. The race track scenes are very lifelike. The very funny 'one-armed piccolo player'bit is maddeningly chopped from most prints now. Other good Altman:COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME, M*A*S*H, NASHVILLE. Still others more popular with other people than with me.

POLLACK. Good film about the Japanese mafia. From the revival years in Mitchum's career.

JOHN STURGES. Good military film with McQueen, James Garner and others. The marching theme from this film is one of my favorites.

STURGES. Spencer Tracy stars in a very suspenseful film about an unwelcome one-armed stranger in a small town. Sturges' HOUR OF THE GUN, the Wyatt Earp/Doc Holliday tale, was pretty good too.

RITT. Star vehicle from Newman's peak years. A modern day 'western'. Oscar nom for Paul.
