Bridge to Terabithia: Trophy Newbery (046594005953-40184)Bridge to Terabithia: Trophy Newbery (046594005953-40184) by Katherine Paterson
Buy used from: $0.25
The best children's book I have ever read. The sudden climax of the book is tragic and depressed me for weeks, but the message sent to me by this book has helped me get over grief of any kind. Definitely one of the most powerful books I have read, not just among kid lit.
The Cricket in Times Square (Chester Cricket and His Friends)The Cricket in Times Square (Chester Cricket and His Friends) by George Selden
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.56
I found this book to be comical, enjoyable, and touching. I read the book in third grade and have not enjoyed many books as much as this.
The Little PrinceThe Little Prince
Buy used from: $19.84
An amazing tale that is so much more than a story about a small alien. The idea of growing up is central in The Little Prince and the last line resonates with you for a long time.
The Complete Tales of Winnie-the-PoohThe Complete Tales of Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne
Buy new: $26.40 / Used from: $8.70
Milne's stories are among the best fantasy books out there. Christopher Robin and Pooh's relationship, though doomed due to the conflict of time, makes you embrace this story for all it's worth.
The House of the ScorpionThe House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
The House of the Scorpion probably was one of the darkest books I read as a child, but it really raised questions about scientific advancement to me.
Jacob Have I LovedJacob Have I Loved by Katherine Paterson
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
Paterson's masterpiece, I feel. I don't believe this should qualify as a children's novel just because the depth of its message is something I had to read years later to truly grasp.
MatildaMatilda by Roald Dahl; Illustrator-Quentin Blake
Buy used from: $0.01
Funny and charming. Dahl's best book.
Ramona and Her FatherRamona and Her Father by Beverly Cleary
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01
This book represents Ramona's series overall, as I could not ignore it in making this kind of list. Though Cleary may have written better books, such as Dear Mr. Henshaw, I would choose a pack of Ramona books over the greatest classics if I were ever stuck on a desert island.
Tuck EverlastingTuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.58
And finally, a book that I love mainly because of the experience I had with my friends reading it. Though perhaps not one of the best books I've ever read, I had to put Tuck Everlasting on my list because my memories of this book will, like the Tuck family, live forever.
