The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar WaoThe Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $4.10
I loved, loved, loved the parts about Oscar, but some of the middle parts about other family members were tedious and seemed drawn out. The author's guilty of the too-many-endings syndrome, but the energy of the prose at its best was positively electric.
Living Dead in Dallas (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 2)Living Dead in Dallas (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 2) by Charlaine Harris

These books are totally silly and totally fun.
Out Stealing Horses: A NovelOut Stealing Horses: A Novel by Per Petterson
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $2.88
A breathtaking, haunting novel, subtle and restrained. "All my life I have longed to be alone in a place like this... But even then, for instance in the middle of an embrace and someone whispering words in my ear I wanted to hear, I could suddenly get a longing to be in a place where there was only silence."
Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned: StoriesEverything Ravaged, Everything Burned: Stories by Wells Tower
Buy new: $16.32 / Used from: $10.60
This guy is not at all a bad writer, but I got sick of getting drawn into stories only to be cut off by clumsy endings. There are barely submerged feelings of rage in most of the male protagonists; the feeling of dread this creates propels you through the stories. Intriguing, but ultimately disappointing, it certainly does not live up to the hype.
City of Thieves: A NovelCity of Thieves: A Novel by David Benioff
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.77
Utterly disarming, highly recommended. "[Redheads hate men.] Makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Any redhead you meet out there, chances are she's descended from some Viking who ran around hacking people's arms off before raping her ancestral grandmother. She's got the blood of the pillagers in her.
The Dud Avocado (New York Review Books Classics)The Dud Avocado (New York Review Books Classics) by Elaine Dundy
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.95
A charming novel. Right when you think you can't take it anymore, that the narrator is silly, naive, and superficial, she laughs at herself, begs your indulgence, and charms you anew. It's fun to hear this story (young person in Paris, partying all night, visiting all the different cafes, falling in and out of love/lust, getting herself and others into trouble) from a woman's perspective.
Evermore: The ImmortalsEvermore: The Immortals by Alyson Noel
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $2.99
The romance is unconvincing, the characters flat, the mythology annoying, and there is something cringe-worthy (the names, for one!) on each and every page. It's a cheap Twilight and a Sookie Stackhouse rip-off. Sure, many of my criticism could be leveled against those (neither series is great literature), but the first has real magic to it, and the second is hilarious and charming.
Little, BigLittle, Big by John Crowley
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $7.14
Not a quick read, but ultimately rewarding. I didn't find it all that emotionally engaging or nuanced, but the atmosphere is so rich and the story is so imaginative that I found myself very much looking forward to the next time I'd be able to sit down with it.
A Question of Upbringing (A Dance To the Music of Time #1)A Question of Upbringing (A Dance To the Music of Time #1) by Anthony Powell
Buy used from: $30.97
I'm surprised at how taken I was with this novel. The narrator, curiously absent himself, is wonderfully descriptive when it comes to the characters he encounters. "Human relationships flourish and decay, quickly and silently, so that those concerned scarcely know how brittle, or how inflexible, the ties that bind them have become."
The Book ThiefThe Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $4.40
Yes, this book is a bit gimmicky, and, yes, I'm particularly susceptible to emotional manipulation. But I really, really loved this book. "A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning to a lasting friendship."
The Time Traveler's WifeThe Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $2.68
This book enchanted and irritated me like a John Irving novel. More should have been left to the imagination; the author seemed far too intent on making the time traveling premise plausible: it seems like the book should have been cut by at least twenty percent. But in spite of some heavy-handedness and long-windedness, it's a touching and wrenching love story--very thought-provoking.
Olive Kitteridge: FictionOlive Kitteridge: Fiction by Elizabeth Strout
Buy new: $8.40 / Used from: $5.99
Oh man, this author is the real deal. An extraordinarily moving work. "Big bursts are things like marriage or children, intimacies that keep you afloat, but these big bursts hold dangerous, unseen currents. Which is why you need the little bursts as well: a friendly clerk at Bradlee's, let's say, or the waitress at Dunkin' Donuts who knows how you like your coffee."
All the Living: A NovelAll the Living: A Novel by C. E. Morgan
Buy new: $15.06 / Used from: $4.95
Sometimes beautiful, sometimes irritating, sometimes stifling, sometimes luminous. An intriguing debut. "Don't grant yourself permission to be ungodly just because you're young. Maybe you think it's some small thing to stir up love, but you're wrong."
The Girl Who Played with FireThe Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson
Buy new: $10.00 / Used from: $9.00
A solid and enjoyable mystery. The plot was tighter than that of the first book, but I also noticed that I wasn't turning pages at the same breakneck, stay-up-until-5-a.m. speed (though I did finish the sequel in a day and a half). I'm looking forward to the third one, and I remain exceptionally fond of the character Lisbeth Salander.
ShiverShiver by Maggie Stiefvater
Buy new: $9.71 / Used from: $9.03
The beginning was really lovely; the middle dragged; and the ending picked up as the plot finally moved. I wish that the prelude to the romance had been drawn out a bit and made more mysterious; that was done so agonizingly well in Twilight. Intriguing story, uneven execution. Worth reading.
After the Fire, a Still Small Voice: A NovelAfter the Fire, a Still Small Voice: A Novel by Evie Wyld
Buy new: $16.32 / Used from: $3.69
A fantastic, riveting, subtle work, beautifully written and conceived. "A strand of hair caught in the corner of her mouth and how appalling it was that he would not be the one who was allowed to free it."
RunawayRunaway by Alice Munro
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
This is the first Munro collection I've read. I will definitely be reading more. What struck me most about her writing was how assured and natural it is--effortless. My favorite was "Chance." Highly recommended.
New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2)New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $4.25 / Used from: $2.28
A solid follow-up, it didn't disappoint at all, and the character of Jacob Black is wildly endearing. Part of me doesn't want to get to the final rejection, but I guess "love is not love which alters when it alteration finds."
Brooklyn: A NovelBrooklyn: A Novel by Colm Toibin
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $13.97
Almost like a fairy tale, and definitely a coming of age tale, this book is beautifully and tenderly written. The last part was more emotionally complex but all too real. It seems challenging for writers to render characters like Eilis, with her basic desire to do right by people and her goody-two-shoes-edness, but Toibin carries it off wonderfully.
Love and Summer: A NovelLove and Summer: A Novel by William Trevor
Buy new: $17.13 / Used from: $15.93
Against the quiet, plodding backdrop of a small Irish town, emotions are powerfully stirred, often at odd, seemingly innocent moments. "And something was missing when so suddenly she whispered that love was a madness."
Await Your Reply: A NovelAwait Your Reply: A Novel by Dan Chaon
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $10.00
Absorbing read about twins, mental illness, the construction of identity, and familial ties. I would recommend not looking too closely at reviews for this book before you read it; I imagine it would have been more fun if I'd known less about it.
One For SorrowOne For Sorrow by Christopher Barzak
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.03
A disappointing, tedious novel. By the end I was skipping whole pages at a time.
American Salvage (Made in Michigan Writers)American Salvage (Made in Michigan Writers) by Bonnie Jo Campbell
Buy new: $13.64 / Used from: $34.85
Excellent short stories. They are maybe slightly less than satisfying because of how short most of them are, but it says something about Campbell's abilities that each story weaves such a memorable and compelling spell; I'd love novel-length versions or continuations of each. Gritty, tender.
Self-HelpSelf-Help by Lorrie Moore
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $8.99
A quick read. I liked the first few stories best, but it may be because the later ones seemed to reiterate the early ones. Reading "How," a story about a woman falling out of love, was an uncomfortable experience; the emotions were familiar. There is not a lot of range in this collection, and the tone and style got old. I'm curious about how her more recent collections compare.
A Way of Life, Like Any Other (New York Review Books Classics)A Way of Life, Like Any Other (New York Review Books Classics) by Darcy O'Brien
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $1.79
Delightful! The sense of humor is wry and irresistible as the narrator, a teenager and native Angeleno, flits between affection and mockery for his delusional parents, who've fallen from Hollywood fame.
CivilWarLand in Bad DeclineCivilWarLand in Bad Decline by George Saunders
Buy new: $9.89 / Used from: $4.16
Worth the read for "CivilWarLand in Bad Decline," "Isabelle," and "The 400-Pound CEO"--utterly original, horrifying, hilarious, and moving. The rest was forgettable.
The Little StrangerThe Little Stranger by Sarah Waters
Buy new: $17.79 / Used from: $10.63
Hypnotic and spine-tingling story, beautifully crafted and maddeningly ambiguous. "Arriving at that crumbling red house, I'd have the sense, every time, that ordinary life had fractionally tilted, and that I had slipped into some other, odder, rather rarer realm."
The Hotel Eden: StoriesThe Hotel Eden: Stories by Ron Carlson
Buy new: $16.95 / Used from: $12.21
I got this to read the story "Keith"; I saw the movie recently, which is based on this short story. To say I loved the movie is a gross understatement, so I was curious about the story, which is also good. "I haven't lied to you this far, and I'm not going to start now."
