Bach: Well-Tempered ClavierBach: Well-Tempered Clavier by Sviatoslav Richter

Richter recorded the WTC twice. Both are excellent. The First rec, on Melodya, might have more fire, but this issue has more substance. Still, both are first rate.

This is the total Carnegie Hall release. From the fire-breathing Appass, to a perfectly sculpted Fant in C op17. and on and on. The sound is not perfect and the playing is authentically russian-pre western influence.

An excellent release. The four scherzi and 13 preludes. Richter never recorded them all butt this is a large portion of what he did.
Richter plays Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 5 / Piano Sonata No. 8Richter plays Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 5 / Piano Sonata No. 8
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.17
My second richter disc and my introduction to Prokofiev[Richter was most peoples intro]. He was the greatest Prok interp ever. The Piano Sonata 8 has never been bettered. Nor has the PnoCto.
Bunterblatter / Pictures at an ExhibitionBunterblatter / Pictures at an Exhibition by Robert Schumann
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $11.95
Richter was the greatest Schumann interp of the century. Though I prefer Egerov's much more depressing account of the Bunte Blatter, this is second best. Richter owns the Pictures.
Beethoven: The Last Three Piano SonatasBeethoven: The Last Three Piano Sonatas
Buy used from: $23.95
Richter has the perfect blend of virtuosity and intelligence for the holy trinity of the piano repretoire.
Rachmaninov: Concerto for piano in Cm; Concerto for piano in F#mRachmaninov: Concerto for piano in Cm; Concerto for piano in F#m

richter in the Rach 1 and a much better perf of Rach2 than with Karajan who persisted in keeping the dragon down-as he did with the Triple Cto and Tch Cto
Tchaikovsky: Piano MusicTchaikovsky: Piano Music
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $42.26
A wonderful recital of Tch piano music. I have never been a big fan of Tch's piano music, but Richter makes this a must have disc. Also check out Pletnev's DG release of TCH.

Richter with good friend Fischer-Dieskau.
Schumann: Piano Concerto / Sviatoslav RichterSchumann: Piano Concerto / Sviatoslav Richter
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.25
More Schumann by the master. The Schumann Cto was Richters favourite and his many recordings of it prove a dedicated and masterful interpreter. An unparalleled Toccata and Waldszenen, along with a rare Allegro and App round out one of the finest discs in the DG catalogue.
Sviatoslav Richter in the 1950s, Vol. 3Sviatoslav Richter in the 1950s, Vol. 3
Buy new: $33.98 / Used from: $24.00
This is to advocate the purchase of VOlumes 1-5 of Richter in the 50's. The recording quality is excellent. All are of the highest interest-especially the Shost op87.
Prokofiev: Sonates pour piano Nos. 2, 6, 9Prokofiev: Sonates pour piano Nos. 2, 6, 9
Buy used from: $39.00
This is a splendid treat. Prokofiev wrote the 9th for Richter especially. The sixth was premiered by Richter and the Prokofiev told Richter he was his preferred interpr for the second. All of these are available on the 50's discs. The price is ridiculous. You can get it for much less.
Richter Plays Prokofiev: The War Sonatas: Piano Sonata No 6 in A, Op. 82 / Piano Sonata No. 7 in B flat, Op. 83 / Piano Sonata No. 8 in B flat, Op. 84Richter Plays Prokofiev: The War Sonatas: Piano Sonata No 6 in A, Op. 82 / Piano Sonata No. 7 in B flat, Op. 83 / Piano Sonata No. 8 in B flat, Op. 84
Buy used from: $99.99
The War Sonata's are the gems of the Prokofiev Piano Lit. The 6 was a richter staple and the seventh and eighth are two of the finest sonata's of the 20th century. The eighth is probably the best-a perfectly structured accumulation of Prokofiev.
Schubert: Piano Sonatas D. 664 & D. 784Schubert: Piano Sonatas D. 664 & D. 784
Buy used from: $41.85
Thus far, I have claimed that Richter is the finest Schumann, Rach, Prokofiev, Haydn, and Debussy Interpeter. To that I add Schubert. Like Haydn, Richter was the first big pianist to incorporate Schub to his programs.
Liszt: Sonata in B minor/Funerailles/Transcendental EtudesLiszt: Sonata in B minor/Funerailles/Transcendental Etudes by Sviatoslav Richter
Aah, is there a more perfect vehicle for RIchter's talenst than the liszt sonata. I agree, there is not.
Sviatoslav Richter in Concert; Historic Russian ArchivesSviatoslav Richter in Concert; Historic Russian Archives
This contains several beeth sonata's, including the last three. the Liszt sonata. The Schubert D960[a richter specialty], D894[another RIchter gem] and would be a perfect place to start for those new to the Richter mines.
